Some breaking Mariners news.....Julio Rodriguez is a finalist for AL ROY, and Scott Servais is a finalist for manager of the year.  Not shocking in either case!

Why not move Ty France to second base and acquire a first baseman with pop?
Mark P
6:26
The M's are more comfortable with France as a guy who can play second base once in a while, rather than relying on him as an everyday option at the position.

Do Lewis and Kelenic get you Arozarena?
Mark P
6:28
If the Rays front office is particularly high on Lewis or Kelenic, I can see them agreeing to this.

Then again, if the Rays front office is high on Lewis or Kelenic, the M's should hang onto them like gold.  Tampa doesn't lose many trades.

Wait, confused Phillies fan here. You really think Seattle would do Flexen for Hoskins?
Mark P
6:28
Seattle would.  I don't think the Phillies would

Do you think the Mariners swing a trade from their bullpen depth to bolster their lineup. Feel like the Jays, Yankees, Phillies could all be interesting trade partners for a deal of that sort of structure.
Mark P
6:29
Agreed, though you can expand that list way beyond just those three teams.  Pretty much everyone needs bullpen help.

It seems like free agency offers some big upgrades at shortstop. With the M's committed to JP Crawford, is there a difference-making move in free agency the team might make other than SS? Is there any chance they are in on Judge?
Mark P
6:32
Dipoto left just enough wiggle room in his after-season press conference to make me think that the Mariners are indeed open to moving Crawford to 2B, if one of the big shortstops can be landed.

I'd be surprised seeing Judge end up in Seattle, just because that would be a real quantum leap of spending for them.  Can't entirely rule it out since we all know the front office makes bold moves, but I'd say the chances are pretty low

Lay out a Mariners a successful M's off-season that DOESN'T involve them signing one of the top 4-5 free agent bats.
Mark P
6:35
They trade Evan White for an underperforming ex-top prospect on another team, and the new guy breaks out in Seattle.

Haniger re-signs, stays healthy the whole year, and it's 2018 redux.

Do you think the mariners will sign Ty France to long term contract?
Mark P
6:38
I'd lean towards no.  He turns 29 in July and is already arb-controlled through 2025

Could DiPoto put together a compelling enough package to be able to pry Bryan Reynolds from the Pirates?
Mark P
6:40
They could, sure.  But the farm system is a bit of reload mode after promoting so many notable players to the Show.  Pittsburgh would naturally have interest in big league-ready talents too, but the M's need some of those guys themselves.

Basically the question is, how much young depth is Dipoto willing to sacrifice for one win-now type of player, and does he think Reynolds is good enough to be that game-changer type

Have you ever been to T-Mobile Park?
Mark P
6:40
I have!  It's one of my favourite ballparks, had a great time in Seattle.

Will the Brewers pickup Wong's option and if not, is he a fit for the Ms at 2nd?
Mark P
6:42
I tend to think Milwaukee will decline Wong's option, but he isn't a great fit with the Mariners.  Crawford/Wong are similar types of players, and since the Mariners are looking for more offense, Wong probably won't be a target unless the M's add hitting at another position or two

Do you think the Mariners will go after someone like Jose Abreu or JD Martinez to fill the DH spot, or do you think it’s more likely they will rotate players through that spot in the lineup?
Mark P
6:44
Probably a rotation is the best guess, since Lewis might need more DH days if his knee troubles aren't entirely behind him.  Rotations in general are a good idea unless you have a really elite bat in there as designated hitter.

With Abreu, at least he can play a lot of first base, and maybe that's what gets France more time at 2B.  But, if the Mariners were really all that comfortable with France at the keystone, you'd think he would've just been there this whole time.

Just wanna say love the team-specific chats! Thanks for all the hard work!
Mark P

Thanks, reader who I'm now suspicious is Ty France's wife or perhaps Ty France himself.

Do you think the whole "JP is our SS" has more to do with JP not wanting to move, ala Trevor Story, or do you think I am just committing to my guy?
Mark P
6:47
I think it's more about Dipoto being committed to Crawford.  Since all you hear about Crawford is what a good clubhouse he is, you'd think he'd have no issue (like Story did) about moving to second base to accommodate another good player who can help the team win
6:48
That's it for tonight's chat, thanks so much for all the questions!  This was the most heavily-attended offseason chat yet, which may have something to both with the timing (i.e. it wasn't at 9am ET) and because people are fascinated by the Mariners.
