Greets, Monday chatters! Hope y'all survived "Rivalry Weekend'! Great to be back again; let's bang out some questions here....
Dave
12:03
Brent, thanks for the chats!  10 team mixed H2H points- what to do with Semien?  Statcast page is terrible.  BHQ has him with a .236 XBA and 78 PX, which seem optimistic.  Drop him for Keith or Aranda?  Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:03
For Aranda in a second, even in a 10-teamer. Might even go Keith over him. Age decline risk for Semien is real.

What do you see coming from M Vargas ROS?
Brent Hershey
12:05
Quite possible he hangs onto that 3B job all year and is a sneaky contributor when you look back in October — one of those good fantasy players on bad teams. Had a big pedigree w/ LAD, so this recent run not totally out of the blue ... and knowing that it seems to be tied to a mechanical change is always a good thing.

Hi Brent, thanks for answering these 2 questions. 16 team H2H Points league

Question #1: We start 5 SPs. My first 4 are strong: Valdez vs SEA, Bubic vs @SF @MIN, Woo @HOU, Boyd @CIN

My 5th and final starter must come from an uninspiring group: Buehler vs NYY vs BAL, Cabrera vs CHC @LAA, May vs ARI

I'm tilting towards May (minimize damage) with Buehler 2nd. I doubt Buehler goes more than 5 IP in either game which precludes a QS.

Question #2: Due to injuries my UT spot is open: available are in order of preference: Yainer Diaz, IKF, Ramon Urias, McCutchen, Eli White and Semien.

Thoughts? Advice?

And Thanks again.
Brent Hershey
12:08
  1. Yep, agree with May1; Buehler2
  2. Yainer way out it front of the rest, and I think you've got the remaining order about right, trying to balance PT/skills the rest of the way. From Urias on down, will need to monitor PT; they may not be long-term answers.

Morning, Whats your call on Bachman does he come back as a starter or reliever and is he worth a free agent bid,I need starting pitching also what is the chances that Stephenson gets save chances ?, Thanks for your input.
Brent Hershey
12:12
Feel like the jury re: role is still out on Bachman ... I liked Detmers, even Silseth better coming into the season, but neither of those has worked out well. Have to take a side, I'd say reliever with Bachman.

Stephenson - maybe 20%ish that he becomes the guy at some point? The problem is that right now, we've not seen him against MLB bats yet. In theory, it seems that Jansen will get moved at the deadline, but with Joyce gone, there's not a clear guy to step into that saves seat right now.

Need help with my offence, 5x5 roto:

which 2 catchers to play out of (Kirk, Stephenson, Baldwin and Jansen)

and got 3 players for two spots (Berger, Ke'Bryan Hayes, Bogarts) - who sits?      thanks!!
Brent Hershey
12:14
C: Kirk and Stephenson. Would be nice to hold onto Baldwin if it's possible (such great metrics; would be a boon if Murphy got hurt again. With those other choices, can move on from Jansen.

Hayes would be the easy sit for me out of that trio.

Good luck!

Hi Brent! NL 10 team 5x5. I have a chance to FAAB Logan Henderson & I have SStrider to activate — which pitcher(s) should be waived to make room?: RRodriguez, L Mey, P Johnson, Casparius?
Brent Hershey
12:16
Beano! Been pitching great, but Rodriguez is the first cut for me. Then, I think you try and decide which of Mey or Johnson is closer to saves -- I'd prob prefer to keep Casparius in that he could easily find value starting again, given its the Dodgers. Love what I've seen from Mey, but reality is probably that Johnson is more of the no-doubt CL if there's an injury.

hi Brent, I am in an NL only 5x5 without holds. Is a guy like estrada (who looks like #3 in pen still more valuable than someone like johnson (atlanta) who is second on his team with a struggling closer or a sixth starter like Matz or Harrison.
Brent Hershey
12:21
As with Beano above, I usually try to think about these Qs in terms of who is closest to saves. In this case, I'd agree that Johnson is closer than Estrada -- another instance where I love the skills, but are we sure that Estrada steps in if Suarez goes down/ is traded, etc.? To me, I'm more sure that Johnson is the guy if Igelsias gets moved off that role.

The idea of holding Harrison for a SP opening is tempting, though (am not interested in Matz in this situation). He could (COULD, not guaranteed) pull a Birdsong, for instance. Probably still too much risk to sneak ahead of Johnson on your list ... but not a choice that I'd hate, either, assuming he's the "last" guy on your active pitcher list.

5x5 NL only league - please rank ROS. L.Henderson, M. Abel, R. Weathers and S. Kolek. Thanks!

I’m puzzled by the Brewers’ handling of Caleb Durbin. As bad as he’s been, they keep playing him but don’t let him run. What gives? 11 team NL only keeper with 5 man reserve,  need steals, is he worth holding or time to cut bait?
Brent Hershey
12:24
Agree; I don't have any Durbin but just this morning realized how bad his line has been. It's a .263 OBP, but speed skills have not shown anything yet, either. In NL-only, you probably need to hold still, but if you're able to bench that would be better.

Tinkering around the edges of my NL 5x5 roster. Who is a better option for saves ROY: Jacob Young or Nick Allen?
Brent Hershey
12:25
Maybe you mean 'steals'? Young in that case (and really, in most cases between these two)

12:27
Hi Brent. What are your ROS expectations for Bryan Reynolds? He’s striking out more this year, and hitting more ground balls. His PX is down from career norms, but his xPX is fine (108). He was dropped in my 5X5 OBP league and I’m considering dropping Addison Barger to pick him up. Should I?
Brent Hershey
12:27
Yeah, Reynolds' track record points to him rebounding some, but boy I love me some Addison Barger (probably too much). Hits the ball crazy hard, seems to have a couple paths to PT. That's a tough one. Head says Reynolds, heart goes with Barger.

Hi, Brent. What in the heck should I do with Jose Alvarado? He's been pretty good so far, but this long suspension will obviously make him unusable. I have him at $1 in my NL-only keeper league, but I think I have to cut him and grab someone who is a good middle reliever. Your thoughts?
Brent Hershey
12:30
Hmmm ... the $1 keeper is the rub here, of course. Last year of his deal, so if somehow he would sign with a NL club as at least part of CL share for 2026, you make out like a bandit. But ... still think that's kinda a longshot given his history. I'd probably cut bait for now, but consider re-adding in August?
DrDave
12:32
NL only, 5X5.  In need of saves having lost Puk and now Alvarado.  Don't need to win the category, just need a 7th or 8th out of 11 teams.  Savvy league so I need to deep dive on possibilities.  Any suggestions as I pour over the Bullpen Indicators?
Brent Hershey
12:32
Try to ID trade candidates, and grab the backup or skills leader. Especially take note of Leverage Index so far (guys managers have put in important situations).
Spooge
12:32
Better option for short term saves - booser CHW or brieske Det?
Brent Hershey
12:32
Brieske if I HAVE to choose ... and by answering this, I do.

12:38
Joc Pederson was named as a buy low guy in bbhq today but his px and xpx has been awful. Is there something I'm missing?
Brent Hershey
12:38
Track record; fact that team is still playing him and you know the role (vRHP only); Statcast/hard hit metrics are all still very good; BABIP is absurdly low; big step forward in K rate. Also, it tracks that PX is putrid (that's results based, and the BABIP shows here) but xPX (skills based) is better and nearly league-average. Nothing guaranteed, but that's the thought process.

Greetings, Brett. Cubs pen question. Does Pomeranz have any chance of pitching high leverage innings and grabbing wins and a few saves? He's a free agent option in our NL only league.
Brent Hershey
12:39
I'm pretty skeptical; fell like that save last week was a one-off. Cubs have other options; I'd look elsewhere.

I'm thinking of issuing a missing persons alert for Nolan Gorman.  When I last checked BHQ was still projecting 60% playing time for the former 9D prospect.  The waiver wire in my 10 team NL-only league is pathetic - is holding and hoping for the best my only course of action?  Thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:42
Tough part here is that STL indicated early on they were committed to giving him some run (that undoubtedly has something to do with the PT projection). He's a limited player ... but has shown he can provide some pop. I, too, would stay on the waiver wire lookout ... but might be that holding for now is the best course.

Are we giving up on Nick Kurtz outside of deep leagues?
Brent Hershey
12:42
Case for it, I think. The K concerns at his callup have definitely held.

12:46
What to do with Baz who is really struggling?  HQ gives him a .5 for his start this week but what is this based on?
Brent Hershey
12:46
Mediocre opponent at home (though if you want to quibble whether Steinbrenner should be giving TAM a bump, I hear you). Our xERA has him pegged at 3.94 and he has a 94 BPV, which are both better numbers that you'd expect (or at least I expected). Don't blame you if you choose to sit, but that's the quickie version of why the tool has him rated higher than you might think.

How do you know when it's time to rebuild? I have an aging roster (machado, sale, eovaldi, springer) in a 16 team dynasty points league. Barely projected to make the playoffs at this point. Do I tear it down or sell off what I have to make a push?
