Many things can be bad at once.
1:27
More to the point, the DV policy, which was collectively bargained, allows for the league to issue suspensions even if there is no criminal finding, as there so often isn't in cases of domestic violence and abuse.
1:28
Most victim's advocates will tell you that a zero tolerance policy does greater damage to victims because it tends to reduce reporting. But I think it is reasonable to look at the incentives the policy has created and, when a player is suspended, take steps to prevent one of the worst moments of a person and his partner's lives from being a market inefficiency teams can arb.
1:29
Not forever, but in the year of the suspension.

Because I am super bored at work: what animal would win a home run derby?
Meg Rowley
1:29
I don't care what the real answer is, I want it to be a dog, because dogs are great and we don't deserve them and it would mean a dog standing on its hind legs and then also, we could have dog outfielders.

Did you see Jerry Remy eating a grasshopper?
Meg Rowley
1:31
It feels like every team that goes through Seattle does this and all we've learned is that they have very boring palates.

Wild speculation. How much of an overpay would it take for San Diego to get a guy like Machado, Harper, or Arenado?
Meg Rowley
1:33
A reasonable but not insane amount. They're not so far off from contending, and being a hero is super cool. I guess it would be somewhat akin to Cano and Seattle, though he'd already won stuff.

The postseason suspension is fine, I’d like to see that, but I’m sick of Chapman being thrown in a bucket with Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson.  Facts matter.  What he did and what he didn’t do matters.  Shooting a gun to blow off steam?  Bad idea!  But not a crime.

I appreciate that we have to let people move forward in their lives if they do what is necessary to better themselves. I'm not sure Chapman has done that, which isn't me snarking. I don't know. He hasn't had another incident and that is good. I would caution you about downplaying shooting a gun to blow off steam given what we know about how DV can escalate, particularly when there are weapons in the home. Thankfully and obviously, Chapman has not had an incident since. But it isn't unreasonable to find that behavior very, very alarming.

I feel like the Padres' current main position players won't quite line up with their future big prospects. Like, Gore and Baez are still three years away, leaving only a year left on the contracts of Myers, Hedges, Margot, Renfroe, and maybe Hosmer. How should they remedy this? Trade prospects to be good sooner, or just let the careers of the current guys go to waste while waiting for better prospects?
Meg Rowley
1:39
They aren't so, so far off, but you're right that a lot of these guys will miss the Very Good Padres window, though for some of them, it's because they aren't themselves Very Good. I imagine they'll have guys available at the deadline. They're looking ahead to optimistically 2019, realistically 2020.

Meg, who is a better player. Scooter Gennett or Javi Baez?
Meg Rowley
1:40
Ok so, here's the thing.
1:42
I have a conflicting aesthetic preference. Because I love watching Javy play defense and I love watching him hit home runs, and I also find a lot of his offensive approach to be sort of tiresome. I think it limits what he can do. BUT he's also been much better this year. He's a good hitter this year! I think Gennett's profile at the plate is more sustainable but he's not exactly thrilling to watch.
1:43
So Báez, even though I think his plate discipline is still suspect.

Man that exhibits alarming behaviour warrants being referred to as a wife beater. Got it.
Meg Rowley
1:44
That isn't what I said, Matt.
Moltar
1:44
Or, we can call him Enrique. Why does he get a universally used nickname?
Meg Rowley
1:45
Because he has one? This is one of those things that requires rather minimal effort to get right, and isn't that lovely? There are so many things that require a ton of effort to get right.

How often do rent-a-players end up signing with the team that acquired them in their contract year? Off the top of my head, I can't think of any.
Meg Rowley

I'm trying to think when Rich Hill signed his deal with the Dodgers. Hold please.

Rich Hill!

Brian Kintzler was a rental for the Nats last year, and resigned with them.  Probably not the caliber of guy that was being asked about tho...

Will Machado sign a bigger contract this offseason than Harper?
Meg Rowley
1:50
ohhhh boyyyyyyy
1:51
I think I still think no, he won't
I think I think that.
I'm not totally sure I think that, but I think I do.

May we have a follow up Mich Haniger appreciation article after that wonderful Segura write up?
Meg Rowley
1:52
Perhaps, though Mitch represents a not so uncommon offensive profile. There are other guys who do some of what Segura does (you are very seen, Andrelton Simmons fans in the comments) but his profile is the most extreme at the moment.
