Well, most free agents are more valuable at the beginning of the deal than at the end.
Most teams would prefer to just take the good years, but you have to be willing to go further in order to win the bidding in most cases.

So, maybe it would hurt in the long run. Look at Kimbrel, Chapman, etc. But Diaz was unbelievably good this year. No reason to think he won't be really good for a while.

Sure, most teams are usually happy to strike these kinds of deals.
But the player has to be willing to do it as well. Some are more open to it than others.

They're already about $15MM away from the luxury tax, which they've never paid before.
deGrom alone would shoot them way past it. And they still need to find a shortstop.

He's not a great outfielder and first base is blocked. They could DH him but they also have Vogelbach, Ruf, maybe Alvarez spends some time there.
If someone else wants to give Smith a shot, I think he gets traded.
