I don't think Ohtani will be available until the deadline.
That's also reliant on the Angels being bad again, which could certainly happen but isn't a guarantee.

Any chance they'll trade someone like Jeff McNeil for pitching talent?
Darragh McDonald
2:39
It's possible but I think Escobar makes more sense. McNeil is very good and can also play the outfield.

2:41
How do the Mets build their farm when much of their talent will be up next year?
Darragh McDonald
2:41
There's still the draft and international players. Going over the luxury tax limits them somewhat, but they still get to add players.

How many years does deGrom get in your opinion
Darragh McDonald
2:42
I would guess... four? I've seen a lot of people saying he'll get a deal similar to Scherzer's, but deGrom is younger.
He has more injury concerns than Scherzer did but he doesn't turn 35 until June.
2:43
Scherzer turned 38 in July.
So, that's effectively a three-year difference.
It also depends if he wants to have opt-outs or options or things like that.

Any chance Conforto could return?
Darragh McDonald
2:44
In the scenario where they think Marte is fine in center, sure.

The Max Scherzer DeGrom unbeatable duo seemed beatable in the playoffs, What is the next best option ?
Darragh McDonald
2:45
I don't put too much stock into postseason performance, personally.
2:46
People love to weave narratives around them because it seems more meaningful but the samples are so small.
2:47
deGrom has just 31 postseason innings in his career and his ERA is 2.90.
Scherzer has a 3.58 in 133 1/3.
2:48
But even if they were really bad, those narratives can be quickly erased. Everyone said David Price couldn't get it done in the playoffs, until the Sox won it all in 2018.

pres of baseball ops…theo? Stearns? None of the above?
Darragh McDonald
2:49
Everything I've read suggests that they're looking for a businessperson to be president, with Eppler staying in charge of baseball decisions.
So, none of the above, I guess.

Which of the 3 prospects (Alvarez, Batty, Vientos) makes the biggest impact on the Mets in 2023?
Darragh McDonald
2:49
I'd lean Alvarez.

The Mets will have 270 million committed with deGrom and Diaz resigning.  That is without addressing Walker, Bassitt, and Nimmo departures nor rest of bullpen.  What can you expect the Mets to do to patch the rotation and bullpen?
Darragh McDonald
2:50
The bullpen will be fascinating to watch. Basically everyone is gone. Drew Smith is the closer right now.
2:51
Diaz coming back is a start, but they probably need to get another... 4-6 arms?
2:52
I would guess they grab a bunch of veterans, Ottavino and a bunch of similar guys who won't cost too much.

When did you start writing for MLBTR?
Darragh McDonald
2:54
I first got hired in March of 2020.
2:55
But then the pandemic made the world stop and my training was paused.
2:56
I returned in July of 2021.

2:56
How many 40m+ contracts can the Mets realistically add? All the talk of having all this $$$ but how much will they spend?
Darragh McDonald
2:57
I touched on this at the end of the Outlook piece. I think they'll be somewhere around 200 million after deGrom opts out and if they pick up Carrasco.
Supposedly, Cohen is willing to get near 300, which gives them about 100 to spend, potentially.
But they likely need an outfielder, two starters and an entire bullpen. So, even that 100 might feel tight at times, depending on what they do.
2:58
If deGrom gets over 40, Nimmo around 20, Diaz around 20, that would be 80 just to get those three back.

2:59
Who do you think are there top candidates to sign deGrom?
Darragh McDonald
3:00
Off the top of my head, I'd say Dodgers, Giants, Rangers.
