Eppler won’t trade prospects but won’t give them a chance either! Baty has to be an upgrade over a wholly mediocre Escobar, no?
Darragh McDonald
11:25
Yeah, I think this is the thing I'm most curious about with the Mets in the long-term.
11:26
They've said that the plan is to spend now but rely more on homegrown players later. So, how are they planning to integrate the younger players when they've made such heavy investments in the veterans?
11:28
Escobar isn't like McCann where he's been bad enough that you just give up on him. He's hit 48 home runs over the past two years. wRC+ of 107 and 106 in those seasons.

the prospects weren't ready last year and its still tbd if they're ready this year. vets like escobar and canha were signed to 2 year deals with the assumption that at least one of baty/vientos starts 2024 as an everyday 3b, the other maybe LF. same idea with the one year narvaez deal
Darragh McDonald
11:30
All those players have fairly affordable options for 2024, so it's still something they'll have to figure out.

Looking at the contracts guys like Turner, Boegarts, Seager, Baez, and other notable shortstops, Lindor is overpaid.  Agree?
Darragh McDonald
11:31
No.
11:34
Turner took a lower deal to be on the East Coast. Lindor's making more than Bogey and Baez because they don't have his defense.

Agreed that Escobar isn’t worth giving up on - but allowing Baty to take majority of games at 3rd and Escobar to DH / fill in at 3rd / even fill in at 2nd (which I’m against but it can be done) and move McNeil to LF for OF depth - Batys bat seems ready to play and he would be a great piece to have hitting 6/7/8

I think something like this would be a fine plan. And it's also possible that injuries make the whole conversation moot.

Will Cohen Spend more or less next off season ?

I guess I would lean less.

Next year's free agent class is pretty weak. Most of the core guys on the Mets are still under contract next year. They should have a shorter to-do list.
Scherzer has an opt-out so they might have to re-sign him or replace him, but that also removes his deal from the books.

Isn’t Jeff McNeil the most logical candidate for a trade ultimately? Reasonable contract and multiple infield heir apparents in the system,
Darragh McDonald
11:39
I think his versatility should allow him and the kids to co-exist in some way.
Carlos Carrasco
11:39
There was talk I was on the trade block... Was it that no one made it worthwhile for the Mets or lack of interest? Am I a deadline mover?
Darragh McDonald
11:40
I believe the latest reporting was that the Mets put Carrasco on the block when they thought they were signing Correa. It was about moving some money. When the Correa deal fell through, they decided to hold.

Fast Forward to July 1.

The Mets are neck and neck with the Braves and Phils. The Brewers are 5+ out, and falling...

What do the Mets have to give up for Corbin Burnes? And should they?
Darragh McDonald
11:41
Burnes is an ace who will have a year and a half of control left. You probably have to give up, like, four prospects, including two really good ones.
11:42
Whichever prospects you don't want the Mets to trade, it's those ones.

Buck versus Dusty in the World Series ?

Certainly possible!

Considering injuries, age, bullpen, etc what is the percent likelihood that we miss the playoffs altogether?
Darragh McDonald
11:42
Let's just go nuts on the polls today.

I think the chances are pretty low, myself. Like I said, it's a fairly similar team to the one that just got 101 wins.
11:45
They'd have to fall off enough that someone like the Brewers, Cubs, Giants or Diamondbacks pass them.

11:46
Which power bats do you envision being available by the trade deadline?
Darragh McDonald
11:48
Joey Meneses, Ian Happ, Wil Myers, CJ Cron, Seth Brown, Austin Meadows are some candidates.
I'd guess Bryan Reynolds gets moved this summer as well.

11:49
What’s your assessment of Eppler? Anaheim did not go well,  I think he has made a couple sketchy trades (darrin ruf) and seems to overly lean to analytics. Constantly talks about predictive modeling. I am just wondering if he has the correct balance of analytics and judgement
Darragh McDonald
11:50
The Ruf trade is definitely a head-scratcher. But most of their free agent buys have worked out.
11:51
I think the bigger question will be about building a player development pipeline. To be determined.
Bobby Bo
11:51
Do you think the Mets view of Mauricio has changed with his performance this spring and in the winter league or are they just happy he’s hitting bombs so they can trade him?
Darragh McDonald
11:52
The bombs are nice but he already had those. He hit 26 last year in 123 games. The bigger question will be about plate discipline.
11:53
He rarely walks and might get exploited as he moves up to Triple-A and the big leagues.
