With the emergence of Francisco Alvarez, would you believe the Mets would consider trading Kevin Parada to the Guardians for the last year of Shane Bieber? would you believe the Guardians would consider this?
Darragh McDonald
4:32
I don't see why the Mets would do this specifically. Bieber is one year from free agency. But I think you're right about Parada potentially being a trade chip at some point with Alvarez blocking him.

Can the Mets get under any of the luxury tax thresholds in a way that Stearns/Cohen would do it?
Darragh McDonald
4:35
It's certainly possible if they want to do it. Roster Resource has their CBT at $219 right now. Add in the arb guys and you get above the $237 baseline. But trading Alonso and/or Quintana gets them below.
But that would be more of a full-on tanking of 2024 than I think they want. They wouldn't be able to add starters via free agency.

Does Vogelbach make this team next year?
Darragh McDonald
4:38
I don't think so, but he's also not making huge money. Projected for just 2.6 million. Wouldn't be disastrous to keep him around.

Trading Mauricio should not be an option
Darragh McDonald
4:39
I don't think any of the young guys will be moved right now. Seems like they want to evaluate them in 2024 before deciding who to keep and who to move.

I'm fixated on a Mets strategy that goes both ways this offseason: Sign Ohtani and trade away Alonso. Ohtani replaces Alonso in the lineup, Alonso's departure frees up much of the cost (assuming Mets would've had to resign him if they don't replace him) and brings back maybe 1 really good prospect. Plus, it opens 1b for Baty/Vientos, who could really use an easier position than 3b. Thoughts?
Darragh McDonald
4:40
I mentioned this in the outlook but I don't think you can totally rule out the Mets on Ohtani, even if this is a step back year or whatever.
Cohen showed with the Correa thing that he'll just go get someone if he wants, damn the expense.
4:41
There's never been a free agent like Ohtani and never will be again. Would Cohen just sit that out because 2023 was kind of a bust? I don't know.

Has the commissioner’s office given any type of timeline for their investigation into the IL problem?
Darragh McDonald
4:42
Not that I've seen.

It seems as though David Stearns has a lot of work ahead with finding a new GM, new manager, players etc.  So far, they’ve traded for minor league talent.  How will he find the time (and what will he do) to upgrade talent evaluation and player development?
Darragh McDonald
4:43
I don't think a new GM is urgent. Many teams operate with a president but now GM. Detroit didn't have one this year, for instance. These titles are sort of interchangeable and front offices are made up of dozens of people, even though we mostly only hear from one or two.
4:44
But to your larger point, new execs usually take some time for the organizational stuff you allude to. My gut says the Mets are somewhat quiet this year as Stearns gets to know all the behind-the-scenes stuff.

A little off topic, does Ohtani still get a record breaking contract even with the Tommy John surgery?
Darragh McDonald
4:45
Yes.

Whose the best manager they could pick up ?
Darragh McDonald
4:46
There are lots of questions about the manager and I can only give annoying answers. It's really hard to evaluate them from a distance, in my opinion, because I think their intangible skills are more important than in-game decision making.
4:47
Do players like them? Can they effectively communicate analytics in a way that they players like and accept and understand? I think that stuff matters more than which relief pitcher they bring into the game and when.

4:47
Do you think Micheal Lorensen would be an arm they could pick up in free agency ?
Darragh McDonald
4:48
Sure, I can see it. They need arms and he won't be prohibitively expensive.

I don't see any way they move Quintana in the off-season, especially with a fairly reasonable salary for a starter. The Mets need to add a minimum of 2 starters not subtract. If he pitches as well next year as he did last I could even see them extending him.
Darragh McDonald
4:48
Yeah, I agree.

What exactly does an Alonso extension look like?
Darragh McDonald
4:49
Off the top of my head, it would probably be in the Olson range.

Seems you are off a little on the money Mets are picking up on Scherzer, Verlander for 2024. Also no mention of Gilbert and Acuna who should be up in 2024?
Darragh McDonald
4:50
There are different reports on the money but I used Associated Press because they are usually pretty reliable.
4:51
I mentioned Acuna in the outlook but missed Gilbert, you're right.
