Should the Mets consider DFAing Marte? His body may not be the same, and Cohen's shown a willingness to eat money (Cano, Verlander, Scherzer) - it'd free up a 26-man spot.
Darragh McDonald
4:52
Depends on his health, I guess. He was still good in 2022. But if they think he's never going to be that guy again, then they would move on at some point.
Spooky Season

Are the 2023 Mets a cautionary spending tale for the ages?
Worse, are they a dagger to the cause of the MLBPA in the 2027 CBA?
Darragh McDonald
4:53
I don't think so. There are exceptions but there is some correlation between spending and success. The money gives you more margin for error.

Do you see the Mets looking to trade McNeil with so much infield depth about to rise from the minors in the next few seasons.
Darragh McDonald
4:55
I could see it, sure. Not a ton left on the deal. I think there would be interest.

I think Giolito, right combination of age and price (given performance), should be on their shortlist, no?  Maybe him and a bounceback shot at Severino or Montas along with a depth guy like Junis?
Darragh McDonald
4:56
Yeah, if Giolito is settling for a pillow deal of some kind, I can see that.
I think my colleague Anthony Franco has floated the possibility of a deal like the one Rodon signed with the Giants. A couple of years with an opt-out after the first.
4:57
Something like that could make sense.

After last night what is the value of Lance Lynn ?
Darragh McDonald
4:57
The home run problem has been there all season but last night doesn't help.

What do you think the Mets will do to address the bullpen? Sign or trade for anyone? One of their biggest weak spots this past season.
Darragh McDonald
4:58
It's hard to say without knowing the overall philosophy. Right now, I'm assuming it's a sort of reset/evaluation year, which points to one-year deals and waiver claims.

5 years from now, are people going to look at Steve Cohen’s first few years as owner as a success or failure?
Darragh McDonald
4:59
I will say a learning experience.

These early offseason outlooks have been great reading Thanks everyone at trade rumors
Darragh McDonald
4:59
Hey, thanks! We put a lot of work into them so that's nice to hear.

Mets sign Yamamoto, mid rotation arm, couple bullpen pieces. This enough for a chance at a wild card spot?
Darragh McDonald
5:00
It's possible, sure. A team only needs to be around .500 to be in the Wild Card race these days.

Senga ROTY?
Darragh McDonald
5:00
He'll get votes but I think Carroll's got it.

What does David Stearns’ roster construction in Milwaukee tell us about what he’ll do in Queens?
Darragh McDonald
5:02
Cohen has mentioned the Dodgers as a model to follow. They grabbed Friedman from the Rays to do small market stuff but with more money for big splashes.
5:03
The Dodgers have done a couple big deals, like Betts and Freeman, but have also tried to have a focus on player development.
5:04
I think the hope is that Stearns can create a player development pipeline wherein there's exciting young players coming up every year but they can occasionally make a big splash on a star.
Jason
5:04
Could the Mets realistically fill multiple holes with players from Japan/Korea? Would a team take the much risk? Yamamoto, Imanaga, Matsui, Rodriguez, Jung Hoo Lee could all be high upside signings and all they cost is money (I.e. no trades or QO attached)
Darragh McDonald
5:05
I wouldn't expect any single team to sign all of those guys, Mets or otherwise.
Sebastian Burge
5:05
Will you re-sign Carlos Carrasco during the offseason or let him walk and try to find another pitcher to replace him? I;ve heard that the Brewers's doors are open to potential Corbin Burnes trade talks.
Darragh McDonald
5:05
Burnes may be available but I doubt the Mets are thinking about trading prospects for rentals.
5:06
That hasn't been the way they've operated under Cohen for the most part, and especially if this year is sort of a semi reset or whatever.
JC
5:06
Yamamoto, Maedea and Ryu for the rotation.
Darragh McDonald
5:06
Seems plausible to me.

Braves keep locking up young talent. Any of the young Mets that deserve something similar
Darragh McDonald
5:07
Mentioned Alvarez earlier. After that, the best bets are probably still in the minors right now.
Sammy So-so
5:09
You say the Mets hope that Stearns can create a player development pipeline, but that wasn't his strong suit in Milwaukee, where he developed some star pitchers but really no star position players. His greater talent was in wise trades.
Darragh McDonald
5:11
Yeah, trades are definitely a part of it as well, but those usually involve dealing prospects.
Evaluating which young talent to keep and which to move is all tied together.
Question

Darragh McDonald, any relations to the Irish swimmer, Darragh McDonald?
Darragh McDonald

I wish! That Darragh McDonald is way cooler.
