In 1A hoops, Section 1 seems to have the strongest playoff teams. What chance do you see the WPIAL seeding all 4 Section 1 playoff teams (Vincentian, Cornell, Union, Naz Prep) as the top 4? I recall the WPIAL doing this a couple years ago but I can't remember what section/class it was.

I would say it's a possibility. But what about Monessen? Yes, their section isn't even comparable. But they're undefeated in section and they try to play a pretty good non-section schedule. I could see them being in top 4 seeds. It wouldn't be the first time WPIAL seeded four from one section as top four seeds. I know they did it five years ago with section that had New Castle, Hampton, North Allegheny and one other team.

Is Uniontown good enough to win the WPIAL this season?

I have not seen them yet. But have heard good things about them. Certainly not in a strong section and they haven't done much in playoffs recently. That might hurt them, although they did beat Central Valley in playoffs last year. I don't think Class 4A is exceptionally strong this year. I think they might have as good a shot as anyone. But could Uniontown be a year away? They start five juniors.

You've obviously seen a lot of HS sports in your career.  I'm interested to know if you observed a change in the level of officiating throughout the year?  Also, with the shortage of officials, what would you do to recruit officials for each sport?

Complaints about officials? Wow that's something new. Those complaints are old as dirt. I really don't know if it's worse or the same as maybe 25-30 years ago. I would guess the same. I just know coaches have been complaining - and rightly sometimes - about officials for decades. It's not new. There are definitely fewer of them. I don't have the answer to attracting more. If anyone knew, they would try. They don't make exactly a ton of money. Maybe 70 or 75 dollars for a regular season game. You might say that's pretty good. But you have to travel to the game. Say it's a 7:30 game. You better be there by 6:45. Which might mean you have to leave by 6. You might not get home til 10:30. And all you get is mostly yelled at by fans.

One of problems with officials is getting enough for junior high or midget league games. Hard to find younger people for junior high who can be at games at 3:30 in afternoon. And a lot of younger officials these days really don't want to start at those games. They want to do varsity.

I've seen Kiski once. Not bad. Prep school with players from everywhere. Kiski lost to Sewickley. Based on that I'll take Latrobe - especially at home.

How would you seed the 6A bracket?? It seems like section 2 is way better top to bottom than the other two sections. Bethel park is in last place and has beaten Woodland Hills and Aliquippa. But North Allegheny and Fox chapel seem like strong teams as well.

The South Hills section is unquestionably better. This could change yet, but right now I'd go 1. Pine-Richland. 2. Mt. Lebanon. 3. Latrobe. 4. Upper St. Clair. 5. Butler.

Mike, do you think it is possible for whoever finishes 4th in Class 4A-Section 2, do be seeded as high as 7 (even though they will have a losing record).  I have QV-NC-Amb-Uniontown-Highlands-Knoch as top 6, but after that I don't think 4A is that strong.  Any thoughts?

It is definitely possible. We've discussed this before. 4A is not very good, as far as depth of quality teams. Blackhawk might be the No. 4 team in Section 2. Look at how many close games they've lost. They're not bad. Would you take Derry, or South Park or Ringgold over them? I think probably not.

Yes, they have discussed it. But I don't think they've given it serious thought. But maybe they should.

Looks like in 4A Quaker, new castle and Uniontown will be 1-3.  Who do you think gets the 4 spot

You can't say Quaker is 1 and New Castle 2. Don't know yet. Quaker Valley plays at Ambridge Friday. Then New Castle plays at Ambridge Saturday. What if Ambridge wins both of them? I think those three teams will definitely be seeded in top 4. Question is where do you put Uniontown? 3 or 4? Possibly 2?

Most definitely. Unless Sewickley would beat OLSH Friday. But if OLSH wins, I think OLSH is 1, Serra 2, Winchester or Summit 3 and Sewickley 4. On other hand, what if Sewickley keeps close to OLSH? Does WPIAL still give Sewickley No. 3 just to keep them on opposite side of bracket of OLSH?
