To you’re knowledge has there ever been a WPIAL basketball team to lose in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL playoffs and go on to win a state championship?

Yes, Valley in 1979 comes to mind right away. Lost to Burrell and Joey Myers in quarters at Civic Arena. Valley came back to win state. Bill Varner, Goosby Pryor, Ron McNabb on team. That's off top of my head. Hampton in 1984 lost in quarters. Brian Shanahan and company came back to make the state final.

Ed McCluskey of Farrell had 11. John Miler of Blackhawk and Ed Olkowski of Midland won 8. Ralph Blundo of New Castle has seven. Few others have six.

I saw a couple teams are missing big players due to the PIAA transfer rules.  Astorino of Eden Christian and Spratt from SL among them.  Still have no idea how Moye of LP can play in the postseason as he transferred from Aliquippa in the early Fall.  The WPIAL denied his postseason eligibility in October.  How can Lincoln Park always seem to skirt the rules?

I don't know all of the kids who are ineligible for playoffs. They are ruled on throughout the year. WPIAL doesn't supply media with list of ineligible. Not sure how Moye is eligible. Some others won appeals to be eligible. No idea why WPIAL ruled Debaba Tshiebwe at Central eligible for playoffs. WPIAL said he didn't play on a high school team last year. Well, he attended a high school in Ohio, played for Spire Academy. High school kids on that team. Played a schedule. Played other high school kids. Used high school refs. WPIAL said he didn't have chance for any playoffs last year. I have no problem with him eligible for regular season, considering circumstances. But still can't figure out how they made him eligible for playoffs while others are not.

I think Ellwood City could be on UPSET ALERT on Thursday night when they host Avonworth in a 3A Quarterfinal.  Avonworth got upset by them last year and think they are anxious to prove something.

I see the WPIAL board is starting to listen to more complaints about private schools. Why are private schools against separation for district titles? It seems to be working out for Philadelphia. I think it raises the level of sports for the city.

Because privates and Catholics are part of the WPIAL. They don't feel they should be separated. And how the heck would you separate?  No Catholic or private school that is Central's size.

I know with the basketball playoffs in full force, you may have not looked into baseball to much.  Do you have any thoughts on dark horse in 5A baseball.  That division seems to be the best of all of them.

If it’s not giving away any state secrets, what reference source do you use to find all those interesting historical tidbits about how many section championships a team has won or how many playoff games, etc?

A man Mike Kost used to keep them. He passed away number of years ago, but he passed them on to us at Post-Gazette. Myself, Kenny "The Horse" and Mike Clarke "Bar" have tried to keep them up to date over the years. Many other records, I've researched myself and kept up to date.

Mike, thanks as always, enjoy reading these. I believe in my twitter wondering I found that the WPIAL was releasing football schedules this week.  Any idea what day? and does this officially make Aliquippa 4A for the next two years?

Either tomorrow or Thursday, they will be released. And WPIAL said yesterday that, as far as they are concerned, Aliquippa case is closed. Aliquippa is 4A in football.

Understand a lot of recruiting violations have came out in basketball and football, but what about other sports. You can’t tell me Winchester isn’t recruiting for their soccer, and some schools for baseball. Why haven’t news came out for recruiting came out in other sports?

Somebody has to have evidence and take it to WPIAL. Many times, no one has evidence. And I know you might find it hard to believe, but all of my deep throats on the soccer circuit are quiet.

Do you think Upper St. Clair boys could upset North Hills in a potential semi-finals matchup?

Hey, both would have to get by quarterfinals first. North Hills gets the Baldwin-NA winner. No easy task there. USC has to win its first playoff game and then the quarterfinals, possibly against Mt. Lebanon. You are getting way ahead of yourself. I can guarantee neither North Hills or USC is looking at semifinal games.
