Heard on the podcast you or brad only have 4 boys team so 6a misses and what was your other
Mike White
11:19
I don't think I named the classes. I think we only have 3-4 make it.

11:19
Who is your pick for 6a coach of the year? Gabos or Skrinjer?
Mike White
11:19
I think you have to wait to see how it plays out. And I don't think we pick coaches of the year by class.

Butler has been banned from the district 10 playoffs because they are technically a member of district 7. If they want to be playoff eligible could they elect to return to the WPIAL and play in their home district? I thought the goal was to rebuild the program. If you are fighting to be playoff eligible, then your program is rebuilt and ready to return to full competition.
Mike White

I addressed this situation above.

Who’s got a better chance of winning NH or FC. have to say FC even though they’re playing a soft opponent while North Hills is prolly playing the top team in the state. That Reading Wood game was game of the year I heard
Mike White
11:21
I haven't seen film on Northampton. Obviously, they're good. I've seen film on Wood. I have a hard time believing Northampton is better than Wood.

Do you think fighting in the stands and poor security is one of the reasons that hockey is not sponsored by the WPIAL?
Mike White
11:21
No. Money is.

How about the bang-up job Brian Batko did covering that game on Saturday? Might be time to give that guy a raise, or at least a guest appearance on the podcast
Mike White
11:22
There was Hoops Weiss, legendary basketball writer in Philly. Then there's Basket-case Batko, another legend. As for a guest on podcast? We are like Kennywood. You have to be over a certain height to get a ride on Varsity Xtra Podcast. Taller than 5-foot-4. Brian doesn't make the cut.

Do you know what wpial schools in basketball could be forced to move up?
Mike White
11:26
I can only tell you boys right now. I would have to check again on girls. By making quarterfinals, OLSH will move up to 3A next year. They have the required six success points and at least one transfer the past two years. Canevin already is bumped up to 2A because of enrollment. So even if they would go to state final and have required 6 success points, they wouldn't be bumped up further than 2A. If New Castle makes 5A state finals, they will be bumped to 6A.

Can Gateway beat Laurel Highlands tonight? What are there chances???
Mike White
11:28
No chance. Gateway has forfeited. ... Of course they have a chance. Need to shoot the ball well, hope Laurel Highlands doesn't shoot it well. Gateway must also get on glass and use their size to win rebounding battle.

I have been following North Hills basketball this year. I watched their game over the weekend. It seemed like it was officiated much differently than many of their other games in the playoffs. Did it benefit them playing away from Pittsburgh?
Mike White
11:28
The second round game Sunday was pretty clean game. Clutching and grabbing was called. Some officials call it differently than others. That's the way it goes.

Hey Mike. Great work, as usual. Always enjoy this chat. Thanks for doing it. The Ellwood vs. Avonworth game came down to one thing; poise. I was so impressed with how Avonworth handled situations, and Ellwood got Ts and kicked chairs and looked rattled. It matters!!
Mike White
11:30
I didn't see any of the game. But I do know Avonworth took control in fourth quarter. Coach said their press paid dividends. I don't know about Ts or anything else.

IF, Laurel Highlands and New Castle win...will their next matchup be the biggest game in the WPIAL this year? Sure hope it happens, I would want to go see that one.
Mike White
11:31
Hmmmm. I would say ... probably yes. Considering their records, the players, what happened in WPIAL championship. Good call.
Mike
11:32
Would Chartiers Valley get moved to 6A next year?
Mike White
11:33
You're talking about Char Valley girls. By winning second round game guarantees them of being bumped to 6A next year. You need six success points and one transfer over two years to move up. CV got 4 points last year for making the state final. Making the state quarters is worth 2 points. So they now have 6 and have one transfer. So up they go to 6A.

Can you explain the process of how the PIAA designs the state brackets and how & which eastern teams play on the west side of the bracket?
Mike White
11:35
They are pre-determined brackets. They do not seed teams for stats. In some of the classes, there are many more teams in the eastern side of the state, so some of the eastern teams play in the west bracket to balance things out. Many times, they try to keep a district champ on their side of the state bracket, until at least the semifinals.
Mike
11:35
Mike who you got in the Moon vs McKeesport matchup?
Mike White
11:35
I'll take Moon.
Money
11:36
Who do you see winning state in 1a boys basketball
Mike White
11:37
Canevin vs. I don't know who from the east. Some good teams from the east also.
WPIAL NO 1
11:41
what’s the record for most boys hoops state championships won by the wpial in a year
Mike White
11:43
Three. 2004 and also 1992. 2004 Penn Hills, Sto-Rox and Moon. 1992 Blackhawk, Carlynton and Duquesne.

11:43
Are you surprised that Rodney Gallagher at LHo has already said he is going to play football in college. He is a heckuva basketball player too. What do you think is his best sport?
Mike White
11:45
No, I'm not surprised. He didn't get recruited near as much for basketball as he did for football. He thought basketball recruiting might take off after last summer when he did fairly well in AAU. But it didn't. Better offers in football. Not surprised. Although I do know he really likes basketball.

11:45
How are officials chosen to ref playoff games? Championship games?
Mike White
11:46
Picked by the WPIAL. They have evaluators at games. Supposedly based on performance. Coaches can also give a list of who they do want and who they do NOT want on games. WPIAL will look at that also.

I attended the WPIAL championships at the Pete and the atmosphere was outstanding even better than the state championships at Hershey. Games were outstanding and the Pete is a nice venue except for the parking for the WPIAL championships. Your thoughts.
Mike White
11:47
The Pete for smaller class games is not good. It's empty. Dead atmosphere lot of times. But the 4, 5 and 6 games, atmosphere can be especially good. I did a story on attendance last week. Almost 25,000 this year. By far the best it's been for 6 classes. Friday and Saturday night, and some Thursday, it was loud. It was great!!!! Good they curtained off the upper decks. I just wish they would let students sit in end zone seats. Would make it even better.
Mick Wight
11:48
Are refs critiqued on their performances? Is there ever any punishment for poor performances?
Mike White
11:49
Yes, there is punishment. They make them listen to an hour long recording of "you can't do that!!!!!!" over and over and over and over. No, there isn't punishment. You just might get a future playoff game.
