You have to look at non-conference games. Strength of non-conference games will be considered. Long way to go yet, though. But yes, some pretty good team is going to get left out.

@Mon Valley is full of it.  I think Belle Vernon wins the state title last year even without Martin.  BV is playing some good teams and Humbert will continue to be a winner.
Mike White
11:36
Agree.
Myrtle Beach Bum
11:36
Mikey, you ever eat at 'Melt' down Myrtle? Best Ice Cream man can find...
Mike White
11:36
Never been to Myrtle.

Scenario: you've gotta arm wrestle Art Walker or John LeDonne. Who you taking?
Mike White
11:37
I think Walker flies off the turnbuckle and floors LeDonne, but LeDonne has a foreign object from his days at Aliquippa.
Highlands
11:37
Highlands showed that they can hang with Imani last week. Another test with Deer Lakes. 3A seems to be pretty competitive and open. Hope the Rams can make it to Acrisure!
Mike White
11:38
Highlands and Deer Lakes is one of best games this week. Do Rams fear the Deer?
MT LEBO 4LIFE
11:38
Do you think MT. Lebo is starting to realize they picked (HIRED) the wrong guy. His Canon McMillan offense was terrible last year and Lebo's offense is just as bad THIS YEAR.
Mike White
11:39
C'mon, man. Greg Perry has coached five games. Give him a chance. Lebo was only 5-6 last year. Sure, we thought Lebo would be better than they are, but did you ever think maybe, just maybe, they're in a little bit of a down cycle in talent right now? Just sayin'
Basketball
11:39
With all the changes in 4A and 5A basketball, who would you put in your Top 5 with no clear favorite in either class
Mike White
11:40
I'd have to sit down and look it over. Not something you can do in maybe a minute.
Mon Valley
11:42
What did he win before Whitlock and Martin got there?
Mike White
11:43
He turned around RInggold and Belle Vernon wasn't very good before he got there. BV in championship in 2019 when Whitlock wasn't even leading rusher or QB. Semifinals in 2017 and 2018. Or is that not good enough?
WPIAL Lifer
11:43
Just for fun....Jeannette's 2007 offense takes the field vs. North Hills 1987 defense for a few series. Who wins best of 3? Too close for me to call.
Mike White
11:44
C'mon. Yes, Pryor was one-of-a-kind. But you're going to take a 2A offensive line and put it up against one of the best defenses in the history of the WPIAL? Please.
Ryan
11:46
Mike does Kiski get another win this year Go Kiski On Friday
Mike White
11:46
Highly questionable. Armstrong and Plum are best shots.
6A
11:46
Why is 6A football so bad this year? Every week, teams are being blown out by their 5A counterparts.
Mike White
11:47
Because 5A is better than 6A. 5A is 13-8 against 6A and has outscored 6A 650-416. Enough said.
Go State!
11:47
When you discuss Tasch, don't you take into account the quality of his opponent? Connellsville, Plum, Norwin... C'mon. FR is the only team that seems to be legit right now.  Player of the half year seems to be a stretch.  Would've loved to see him perform vs. the Woodland Hills, Pine Richland, and Gateways of the world...
Mike White
11:48
Go ask some of the opponents.
Band man
11:48
What makes a good HS band... Playing the hits? or the theatrics?
Mike White
11:48
The clarinet players.

To your point, Mike........yes, many young officials feel that they are ready for the Super Bowl after a year or two of officiating.  Doesn't work that quickly.  Getting on the field and working games proficiently takes many hours of film work, book work, learning from attending meetings and clinics, and many other factors.  Developing a relationship with a veteran official, a mentoring relationship, is an enormous advantage for a young official.  Like anything else in life, learning and earning gets you to the top.  The abuse factor - sadly it's gotten worse.  All fans want their team to win.  Berating coaches and officials will not make your team better.  John Sarandrea, former hoops coach at New Castle and an assistant under Paul Evans at Pitt said it best:  "Players play, coaches coach, officials officiate, parents watch."  You don't watch with your mouth, you watch with your eyes.
Mike White
11:49
Oh geez. I don't think I'd be quoting John Sarandrea when it comes to how to treat officials. It was not good sometimes with John and officials.

Look out for McKeesport. 4A conference finally starting and some of the opponents have faced their style of offense in the past.
Mike White
11:50
I haven't forgotten McKeesport.

I see the PIAA approved flag football for girls. Do you see the PIAA someday having flag football for boys? The 12-year-old boy who lives next door is an excellent athlete (baseball, soccer), but his parents won't let him play tackle football. I think they'd let him play flag football.
Mike White
11:52
I don't know if the PIAA will ever sponsor boys flag. But for younger kids, I believe flag football is tremendous. I know so many football coaches over the years who didn't let sons play until maybe 6th or 7th grade. Flag football is good for younger kids.

Hey Mon Valley..... I think you are starting to figure out that great talent leads to wins. Yes, coaches can win programs but the teams who win have better talent. Belle Vernon is a great program rightnow and will keep winning.
WashPa

For a state with high population, does PA have too many small high schools for football at those schools to be feasible in the future? Do you ever envision small high schools in adjacent districts ever combining for football?
Mike White
11:54
Pennsylvania has too many small high schools for education - not just football. Many of these small, small schools should merge - and not just for athletics. For education. Here's the problem. Many of these schools don't want to close because they say they lose their identity. Other problem: Many schools don't want to take in the smaller adjacent school.

WPIAL Lifer - Just for fun.  I officiated both 07 Jeannette and 87 NH.  I will go as far as to say a possible shutout.  07 Jeannette led by TP was fabulous, no doubt.  But the 87 NH team was simply incredible, especially defensively.  Mr. Arrington would have 20 QB sacks in that hypothetical game.
Mike White
11:55
Agree, but only one problem with your post. Mr. Arrington's first high school game was six years after the 1987 team. He was not on the 1993 team. That was Mr. Renkey, Mr. Carey, Mr. Cisar, Mr. Gorajewski, Mr. Cohan, Mr. Morris, Mr. Schmitt and so forth.

What do you think the ceiling is for Central Catholic? I've seen them twice.   They have talent, but i think the offense is complex and replacing a 3 year starter isn't easy.  The qb has a nice arm and is a good athlete, but it's a tough act to follow since last year's qb ran the offense so well.  I do think the line play is better than last year.   They have the stud rb Faulkner back, but I'd like to see more of the little freshman for a change of pace.  Faulkner is very good, but he's not  the home run hitter like they've had in the past in Jarvis and Jones-Moore
Mike White
11:56
I like the new QB Jy'Aire Walls. I don't know if their running game has been up to par so far. Just looking at statistics. I don't know if they are as good as last year. That doesn't mean they can't win the championship.
City League
11:57
Assuming Allderdice wins the city league for hoops, do you see them making a long PIAA tournament run?
Mike White
11:57
I don't know. That's saying a lot. Allderdice lost a lot from last year.
