Beautiful day outside. Everyone should have a hop in their step. So why not get started early? Let's go. Throw your questions or comments my way.

Look Like Franklin Regional could win section in 5 A with a win over Hempfield and Penn Trafford WOW !
Mike White
10:55
If Franklin Regional beats Hempfield, Franklin gets No. 1 seed in conference, even if they would lose in regular season finale to Penn-Trafford. It's interesting situation. We have Gateway ranked No. 2 in 5A and Franklin Regional unranked, despite Franklin beating Gateway. It's a tough call. I know Franklin beat Gateway, but Franklin has a loss to Latrobe (yikes) and a loss to Shaler. Plus, Franklin barely beat Plum. Some of Gateway's wins haven't been overly impressive, either. If Franklin beats Hempfield and Penn-Trafford, I don't know how you can't then put Franklin ahead of Gateway. I expect Franklin to beat Hempfield. Hempfield QB Jake Phillipps out with a shoulder injury.

Well pickles, Upper St. Clair had Chick fil A in press box Friday night. But only nuggets. No sandwiches. So you weren't available to ruin that Chick fil A sandwich, even if I took you off the sandwich. Your juices still ruin the sandwich. A lot better that you weren't there.

Not sure if you saw some of the boys soccer accomplishments so far. Seneca still dominant, Norwin 10 game win streak, Bethel 11 game win streak, South park undefeated, Kiski and plum playing tremendous. Why don't you come out to some soccer games?
Mike White
10:59
Why don't I go to soccer games? Because we have people who cover soccer - Keith Barnes and Ken Wunderley. I do soccer players as athletes of the week sometimes and a soccer feature here and there. Like this week, my notes column will have lead on Mars girls team, which is having one of greatest runs of any team in history of WPIAL. I love soccer!!!!!!!

Burgettstown with the huge upset thoughts
Mike White
11:01
Yes, over OLSH. Impressive. Makes them a team to watch. But have to remember that they also lost handily to South Side Beaver and Bishop Canevin. I question whether they are championship caliber.

Laurel and south side beaver this week, who do you like ?
Mike White
11:02
Tough one to pick. I'll go South Side.

Good morning, Mike. Yes, there's parity, but can you recall a less competitive situation than this season in the largest classification of WPIAL football? Just off the top go my head, five 5A teams have defeated 6A competition. This situation doesn't bode well for 6A in the PIAA playoffs. Thoughts? Thanks.
Mike White
11:05
Well, I wouldn't call it a "non-competitive situation." It's a competitive situation, for sure. It's just that there is no strong team in 6A, unlike past years. In my opinion, 6A lacks playmakers that have been there in the past. Teams just don't have them, for whatever reason. But 6A champ will play either team from Dist. 6, 10 or City League in quarterfinals. I would think that would be either State College or McDowell. If they win, they play Dist. 3 team in semis. I would think 6A champ would still be competitive in those games and it wouldn't be shocking to still see a WPIAL in 6A final. But St. Joe's likely awaits. That won't be good for WPIAL.

Westinghouse still not getting any love in State Rankings?  Fast and Strong AA team, gonna be a state semifinalist at the very least.
Mike White
11:08
No doubt Westinghouse has proven to be very good this year, worthy of a state ranking. They are right on edge. But hard to move them in top 5 when only one top 5 team has lost in the past four weeks and that's Southern Columbia. We moved Southern Columbia out and put in Beaver Falls. If we ranked six teams, Westinghouse would be No. 6. As for being a state semifinalist this year, it's a possibility. But still would have to get buy, probably, Farrell in quarters. Farrell is very good again.

Mike do you think Cathedral Prep in 5A and Mcdowell who played NA really tough in 6A have a chance against the Wpial teams this year.
Mike White
11:10
Yes, no question. Believe me, Cathedral Prep is good. Not saying it's a definite, but Cathedral Prep can most certainly beat the WPIAL 5A champ. And McDowell lost to North Allegheny by only 29-18. Enough said.

Why is Central Catholic so bad this year?
Mike White
11:12
Hey, sometimes a perennial power can have one of these years. I wouldn't say they're bad. Just not as good as used to be. I've said all along that I think their biggest problem is they don't have a talented running back like they always seem to have, and their offensive line isn't what it used to be. Then last week, their defense sprung holes. But think of it. There are only 5 teams in 6A. If they get in, they are in semifinals. Win one game and you're in championship. I could see it happending.

Can a City League team ever win a football game in Steubenville?  Or is it just a night 'to get paid?"
Mike White
11:13
It's "rent a victim" for Steubenville. Oh well. City has trouble getting non-league games sometimes. Steubenville is willing to have them.

Did usc qb play Friday
Mike White
11:14
Yes Julian Dahlem played. Was 4 for 13.

11:14
Another impressive game for the maples how about lance. Are u ready to believe in the maples
Mike White
11:16
I believe, I believe in Mapletown ... not getting any further than first round of playoffs. Great story for them. Best start since 1968. Landan Stevenson is moving up record books. But they're from the Tri-County South. Never count on too much from those teams. But I believe they can win one playoff game.
What are you thinking ?
11:17
How is the team that is literally in LAST PLACE in 6a and has been hot garbage all year ranked #3 ? Is there a carbon monoxide leak at the PG ?
Mike White
11:21
I don't know, but is there an intelligence leak in you? Mt. Lebanon is not in last place in Class 6A. I look at it as they are all tied for third. They all have 1-2 records. And what do you expect us to do in this situation? Mt. Lebanon beat Central Catholic. Central Catholic beat Canon-McMillan. Mt. Lebanon has yet to play Canon-McMillan. So you want us to put Mt. Lebanon below those two teams when they are 1-0 in head-to-head while Central is 1-1 and Canon-Mac 0-1. It will all come out in the wash at the end. Canon-Mac and Mt. Lebanon play in regular-season finale. So what's the big deal about rankings now?

Any word yet on broadcasts of WPIAL football championships?

Mike - how closely does the PIAA audit enrollment numbers?  Is it on an honor system of is their some sort of validation? Seems strange that any one school could see a 30% drop in the number of boys in their school over a 2 year period????
Mike White
11:23
They have to go by what is reported by schools. Basically, you are saying that principals, superintendents and athletic directors are lying about enrollment numbers. You realize that is what you are saying? And whose enrollment dropped 30 percent in two years?

11:23
Any chance Carrick keeps it competitive against Wheeling CC?
Mike White
11:24
Well Wheeling is 6-0 and has scored 60, 53 and 45 points. So I've just got this crazy Wheeling feeling that Carrick might have just a little trouble.

Last road game of the year for Albert Gallatin.  Can they get a W at Weir, WV on Friday?

Weir High again.

2a seems like a very in consistent classification with all the top teams having questionable weeks. Who is your prediction to be at Heinz

Fire Mike Junko. Can't win the big games. Time to move on
Mike White
11:27
Go back to bed. I guess beating undefeated Peters Township wasn't a big game a few weeks ago. I shouldn't even have answered this question, people calling for firing of high school coaches. Stupid me to even give you a forum.

A few weeks ago you told us about a crazy play where player held ball as time expired thinking game was over only to have opponent take it from him and run for a winning TD because play wasn't dead. Any other great plays you can share?  Maybe a fumbleruski (or hidden ball trick in baseball)?
Mike White
11:29
Never saw hidden ball trick in baseball. Yes, I've seen fumbleruski (is that how it's spelled?) in football. Saw it in state championship game late in fourth quarter in, I think, 1990 when Bethlehem Catholic was beating Seton LaSalle pretty bad. I thought Seton coach Greg Gattuso was going to wrestle Beca coach Bob Stem after the game. Not happy.
