Section 1 SHOULD have 4 of the top 5 seeds in Class 1A. Heck, maybe even the top four. Vincentian, Cornell, Nazareth Prep and Union. I would put them as top 4. No way Section 1 gets four of top seven in 1A. C'mon. Springdale? Are you serious? I don't think Summit gets top 7 either.

I saw PR a couple of times since last week as well as Allerdice/Mt. Lebo.  Never know what you'll get at a high school game, which makes it interesting.  Lebo tagged 25 on the Dice in the first quarter, but only 27 the rest of the way. I think if Allerdice plays PR, they will have to quickly exit that zone because Lebo tore it a new you know what from 3.   PR is interchangeable parts for their first 7 and i'm more impressed with Petcash every time i see him...really lets the game come to him.   Who do you think will win the WPIAL?
Mike White
11:34
I'll take Pine-Richland. Petcash is a serious candidate for Fab 5.

I saw that Ethan Morton broke Butlers scoring record as a Junior, how often does that happen? I can’t recall hearing that before
Mike White
11:34
Yes it has happened before. I don't have any numbers but certainly isn't the first.

Mike: As a casual high school hoops fan — can you give me your top 3 players in the WPIAL to go see in the playoffs?       Also, where are the title games scheduled to be played at?
Mike White
11:36
All title games are at Petersen Center. Feb. 28, March 1 and 2. I can't give you top three players to go see. Ethan Morton is certainly No. 1. From there, many tops. Pine-Richland's backcourt, Latrobe's backcourt. Keandre Bowles of Woodland Hills. Jimmy Moon is 6-7 kid at Serra doing some big things. Many to pick from.

With the departure of many old time  high school football coaches do you see many old time basketball coaches on the way out next?
Mike White
11:38
Sure. Chuck Crummie at Central. Maybe this year? Next year? Or one of these upcoming years. Others will go also in few years. Maybe Ron Faust at Washington, although I think he will be at least a few more years. Like football, hoop coaches aren't going to stick around for decades like they used to.

What are your thoughts on power points eventually used for post-season seeding by the WPIAL? Other districts in the PIAA utilize them. Has it ever been considered? Do you think it would improve the level of teams entering the post season?
Mike White
11:39
No, it has not been considered that I know of. Teams play such different schedules. But c'mon. Four teams from every section make the playoffs. FOUR!!!! Anyone deserving is in. Nobody is being left out that deserves it. No doubt some sections better than others. But if you can't finish in the top four of your section, there is nothing to complain about.

Mike, if CV girls played Peters Twp girls in undefeated vs undefeated who are you taking?
Mike White
11:40
The team with red in their uniforms.
BigChief

Girls 5A should be interesting with CV, PH, OC, Gateway, and Mars. TJ girls maybe sleeper team.
Mike White
11:40
I'll take CV.

In 6A boys, what individual player could you see carry a team to the semis?(besides Ethan Morton)
Mike White
11:42
"Carry" a team isn't quite accurate. There are undoubtedly some good players, but "carry" is a pretty strong word. Morton is really good, but honestly, Butler's fortunes will be determined how other players step up.

Hey Mike - does the WPIAL automatically seed 2nd-place teams higher than 3rd-place teams. In 2A, I think South Side Beaver (3rd in Section 3) might be better than Jeannette (2nd in Section 2). Wondering how often this happens with seeding the brackets; section strength is usually taken into account.
Mike White
11:43
Not sure what you mean automatically? But no. I mean three teams from one section have been seeded in top four teams before. It is very likely to happen again this year, like in 4A. Or 1A. Finishing second doesn't guarantee you anything.

Looking back at Chuck Crummie's career, doesn't the fact that he has had only 3-4 Division 1 players reflect on how great of a career he has had, and also, that allegations of recruiting at Central are mostly invalid.
Mike White
11:46
Chuck has had a great career. Seriously. And he has had more than 3 or 4 Division I players. I can name like 5 right off the top of my head. He has only one WPIAL title but don't judge him on that. He's been great for that school. People like to take shots at coaches, no matter who they are.

Mike, can you explain the absolute curious nature of why the WPIAL cannot produce a legit P5 level big man.  You would think at least once every 5 years, but it seems more like 10-15 years between them.
Mike White
11:47
No I can not. Must be something in water. 12-13 years we had some decent big men. Blair. Pope. Even some at lower D-1s. But it's unexplainable.
Cheetah Champ
11:47
Any thoughts on the Fab 5 ?
Mike White
11:47
Yes, I'll go on a limb and say Ethan Morton will be on it.

11:47
I might be one of the few who think this but I feel like in 5-10 years high school football might not be around and everyone will be playing basketbal you catch my vibe lol
Mike White
11:48
No I don't catch your vibe. Because it's not true. High school football won't be around in 5 to 10 years? Please stop.

With Sewickley depleted do you see any team giving OLSH a tough game in the playoffs?
Mike White
11:49
Well Sewickley beat them Friday, although OLSH didn't have Spadafora. Big difference. But if he's not 100 percent who knows. But watch out for Serra. I think they're good. They even gave Penn Hills a game.

If the WPIAL basketball organization created a slam dunk contest, which 4 players would you choose to be in it.
Mike White
11:50
Boom Reeves from Vincentian. I'd go just outside the WPIAL and offer Oscar of Kennedy Catholic an invite also. He'd win hands down. Might jump over two cars stacked on each other.

Your boys 3A prediction has Neshannock as a 6 seed over section 3 winner Deer Lakes and runner-up Steel Valley.  Curious on your take of a third place team who has a loss to 5-12 Ellwood City on reaume gets the nod over those two teams?  All Deer Lakes losses are to playoff teams and Steel Valley has won 9 in a row. Assuming Neshannock’s win over Aliquippa erases their loss to a bad Ellwood City in your mind?
Mike White
11:53
Just don't think that Deer Lakes section is very strong. Neshannock is 17-5. That's pretty good. Tough section. Few good wins.

Hey Mike, Central bear Fox Chapel last night, are they better then their record this year? Very young, could they be contender for the section next year?
Mike White
11:54
Central was very competitive against some top teams. Sarson kid is back for Central. No way are they favorite for section next year. That will be Butler. Every starter back. Pine will be good again also. But Central can be improved. Not that they were bad this year.

Hey Mike, if you ever make it Rt 30 east to Latrobe to watch the Cats, wings are on me at Dino’s.
Mike White
11:54
Gotcha. Buffalo with ranch mixed in is my favorite. Like the ones at Archie's.

Change of topic, but a big news item. Wondering why Bob Palko wound up back at high school football.  Does the challenge of 6A fulfill what he's looking for? Change of scenery.  Parents won't be any different.
Mike White
11:56
Nothing to do with challenge of 6A. Or parents. I will have comments from him in story later today when I get him. Talking to him few times before any of this came about, he hates being retired. Hates retirement life. Was mistake to walk away and no colleges wanted to hire him.

Are there any Girl's Championship match ups that you would really like to see?
