I wouldn't call it a total failure. I will say, I think there were deals to be made, and the Pirates didn't make any. Maybe the interest was super low, but they could have used some action here, in my opinion.

I don't think Kela getting hurt had anything to do with Adam Frazier, Richard Rodriguez, etc. You could argue that their assets aren't enough, but we also don't know full context here. Heck, Cherington could be a crazy person and making absurd asks. I don't think he is, but we don't know.

It's my birthday and I can't get a question answered?  C'mon!  With under 15 left does Cherington pull a trigger?
Jason Mackey
4:07
We're trying our best. I've stopped typing for more than 30 seconds once in the past two hours, and that was to make some coffee. Writing a story, texting with sources, this. Going as fast as I can.

How do teams evaluate each others minor league prospects currently trade wise without a minor league season?  Certainly some guys have progressed and regressed from their 2019 status.

When do you start rooting for a team looking to compete instead of solely profiting?
Mike Persak
4:08
Teams get video feeds of each other's alternate training sites, which is something. Other than that, they've got to trust their scouting on certain guys from past seasons too

Any update on Terry Francona’s health? Thanks.
Mike Persak
4:09
I have not read or seen anything new

Let’s talk international pool money.  How much do the pirates currently have and are there any teams you guys know of that might have amounts left similar to white Sox that would be willing to take an underperformer ie: Holland
Mike Persak
4:11
Second point may be moot here, but to the first point: They were in the second-highest pool before the Dyson trade, so I think they're up over $6 million now. Hefty sum of cash.

Your best intuition about Cole Tucker in two years? Full time outfielder, full time infielder, or motivational speaker?
Jason Mackey
4:11
It's not our job to tell you who to root for, Wayne. And the same as I tell all pissed off Pirates fans, complaining and making snide jokes about their ineptitude to us doesn't really do any good. Go right to them. Tell them why you're upset and why you don't wanna support them. Mike and I aren't PR for the team. We cover and analyze them, but if you think they suck, that's a you thing.
Mike Persak
4:11
I think he fits best as an outfielder for the Pirates' future, just in terms of what guys will be rising to the majors in the next two seasons
GlenAllen
4:12
I know everyone is thinking next year will be better because they get some pitchers back. But, someone always gets hurt and there is not much depth to absorb the injuries. Any realistic hope they won't be "competing" for the No. 1 draft pick again next year?
Adam Bittner
4:12
A point worth making, Glen. It's why building depth is so crucial. Clubs that do can take the hits the Pirates have the past couple of years and stay afloat. Bad teams can't and blame the hits for the problems, rather than the lack of depth.

Can we sell the Pirates to Jennifer Lopez and move to Puerto Rico or Brooklyn?
Mike Persak
4:13
Would this involve me moving to Puerto Rico to cover the team? I could get behind that...
Rick in Orlando
4:13
I would wait to trade Bell in the off season and pray he has a great last 30 games. That is the only way to get value for him.
Mike Persak
4:13
He could also have a great 162 games next year! That'd be valuable.
Wayne
4:14
What is the best anti/cheap Nutting one liner/insult you've heard?
Mike Persak
4:14
They're sort of lost on me, at this point. I get a lot of them. I imagine Jason gets more.
Rick in Orlando
4:15
I would not think anyone trades for Polanco because of his salary. If anyone wants him, give him away for nothing. Just get him off the books!
Mike Persak
4:15
Well, he doesn't seem to have been traded, so here we are. I think they're willing to ride with Polanco for the rest of the year, see what he can do. Still another year on his contract before the team options, remember.
Alan
4:16
We can finish last with or without Bell...agree/disagree
Mike Persak
4:16
In theory, the Pirates can finish last with anybody! None of this is any one player's fault, specifically, though.
Chief Powhatan
4:17
Would grabbing a catcher be far-fetched?
Adam Bittner
4:17
Mike Persak
4:17
Yes, it seems
Newman
4:17
Why do you suppose my glove work has deteriorated? Was last year a fluke?
Mike Persak
4:17
Newman's glove wasn't particularly good last season, either. He is a solid second baseman though. I think that's his future.

Hello all, since there is not likely to be any significant prospects that are coming back to the Pirates in a deadline deal, what are some of the prospects that we, as fans, should be most excited to see in the future, outside of Hays and Oneil Cruz?  I am looking for things to start to get excited about for next year.  I was not optimistic about this years, even pre Covid.
Mike Persak
4:19
Jared Oliva and Travis Swaggerty in the outfield, Liover Peguero and Nick Gonzales are much younger, but they'll keep rising in the infield. Not sure who else will be around next season, but there's more players who are younger, like Peguero and Gonzales
Chief Powhatan
4:19
Right, Mike, always remember the Buffalo Sabres trying to help their odds to get McDavid.
Mike Persak
4:20
Luckily there isn't a lottery in MLB, but I get your point
Spazeroski
4:20
The one good thing is that the deadline is over and the Bucs can stop “showcasing” guys. Let’s let the younger prospects play and forget guys who will never be part big a winner in Pittsburgh
Mike Persak
4:20
Well, here comes Hayes. That should be interesting, at least
Chief Powhatan
4:20
Season's half over.  Will we see O'Neil Cruz at all in 2020?
