I’d like to see Liriano back pitching in middle relief/lefty specialist.  Only making around $1M this year and I think he is what the Pirates still need in the bullpen.

PROTECT STEVEN BRAULT AT ALL COSTS.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:28
He'd come pretty cheap. A swing-and-miss lefty out of the bullpen isn't something the Pirates have in the early innings — they have Felipe Vazquez for the back end, obviously. But Liriano still is missing the strike zone far too often. Trustworthy?

What are the Pirates chances of getting Chris Archer???
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:29
They're in the mix. What more can you ask.
Sean Gentille
12:29
100 percent. Obviously.

Do you get the sense that Huntington seems more likely, than in past years, to part with a top-prospect (Meadows, Keller, etc..) to get a SP who is under control for a couple of years?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:31
In my most humble opinion, I think yes. And here's why. After making the wild card game three years in a row, it's real easy to think, 'You know what, maybe shooting for a wild card isn't such a good idea. We should wait to go for the division.' But then two years pass — sad years, losing years — and maybe the wild card doesn't sound so bad? How many times can this front office afford to (sort of) punt on this year to wait for next?  And we've seen plenty of times that prospects are promising, but they're no sure thing. I think they'll be very wary of parting with Keller, but the others may be more likely to go this year.

Anything at all suggesting the Pirates could add a 3rd baseman?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:32
I don't think so. Between Colin Moran and David Freese, they're set.

12:32
Sup boys. Thinking the Yankees are out on Arch after their moves and sounds like Padres are fading. If it comes down to a bidding war with the Braves for Archer do you think the Pirates can/and would be willing to go toe-to-toe prospect wise? I know ATL is stacked.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:32
This front office isn't one to win bidding wars. But who knows.

I would love for some middle IF help but haven't heard anything whatsoever about the Bucs pursuing that...
Sean Gentille
12:33
You know what, Adam Bittner wrote something good about that last week. And Milkbutt, I must say, I agree with you. Mercer and Harrison, statistically, have been brutal. That's a tough spot for the team, given what those guys mean and what they've done in the past, but in a vacuum ... that'd be an upgrade area. Read this from Bittner: http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2018/07/26/pirates-trade-ru...
And again, Milkbutt, I thank you for your question.

Other than Kela and the potential SP acquisition, do you see the Bucs looking at any position players?  Utility mostly as Sean Rod has still been bad.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:35
Depending on whether Austin Meadows is moved today, there could be need for another outfielder. But let's say he isn't. I think there's room for one more bench bat, someone experienced (a rental is fine) to go with Sean Rodriguez, David Freese and the backup catcher on the bench.

Is the Melancon trade officially GMNH's best during his Pirates tenure?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:36
It looks pretty dang good, doesn't it? Turned two months of Melancon (and a long line of previous reliever trades) to multiple years of Felipe Rivero-turned-Vazquez and now Keone Kela.

Sean, there were a few rumors on a Twin's starter? Maybe Gibson? Are you hearing anything?
Hunter
12:37
Are you hearing anything on Kyl Gibson?
Sean Gentille
12:38
Which starter would the Twins sell, beyond Lynn? Cuz he's gone.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:39
Gibson has bounced back nicely this season (3.42 ERA, 3.77 FIP) after 5-plus ERAs the past two years. He has swing-and-miss stuff but hasn't panned out quick as expected in Minnesota. I don't think he's someone I'd bet would end up far better than Kuhl/Williams/Musgrove/other back-end arms.

What are your thoughts on the Cutch trade talks?
Texas Steeler
12:39
What do you think of the McCutchen rumors of being on the move
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:40
Makes sense. He and Neil Walker can reunite in New York.

12:40
Keller the only "untouchable"?  I was thinking that he, Meadows and maybe Newman (or whomever they believe could be next years SS).
Sean Gentille
12:41
I'm still not sure why Meadows should be untouchable, but that's another story.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:42
I think Kevin Newman is pretty safe because it's unlikely the Pirates hold on to Jordy Mercer as their starter beyond this year. Newman will be an important component for them next year. But it's not like he's Manny Machado coming down the pike. He's trade-able, but you just have to have a plan for how to replace him.
Sean Gentille
12:42
People overreacted to some rough patches in AAA, then overreacted to a nice stretch here. I think the end result of that is that you move him for the right player.
Peter
12:42
Are you a bit surprised that Neal's pursuing such a big name like Archer? It might be confirmation bias, but he seemed to target smaller names  (e.g., Happ) to incrementally improve the roster.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:43
The big names are the ones that you hear about being pursued. When J.A. Happ came over, *nobody* reported any rumors. The news broke when the trade was announced. They've surely touched base on a number of off-the-radar starters, but we just haven't heard about them yet.
Rob
12:44
I think at this point Newman and Keller are staying put but why is nobody is talking about moving O'neil Cruz? His bat definitely has some trade value alone. Do you think he could be involved in a trade for Archer?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:44
Cruz is one of those low-minors prospects who a trading team would covet. I'd think there's a good chance the Rays would want him if they indeed are putting together an Archer package.
JunJie
12:45
Plz, not Meadows
Sean Gentille
12:45
Something to think about here -- if they're trying for a plug-and-play starter like Archer or Gausman, someone would have to go from the rotation. And Nick Kingham is a) fungible b) with value. That doesn't mean anything, necessarily, but like ... Nova is what he is.
Mark C.
12:45
How much of this information is legitimate?  You see all this information about the Pirates and Archer, and I wonder if these sources use the media to pump up the costs for these guys?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:46
I can say from experience that this information rarely comes directly from team officials and general managers. And they're the ones who would want to over-inflate the market. It's more through-the-grapevine stuff, and reliable as long as you're trusting the right people. And, trust me, reporters aren't just firing off some tidbit their buddy at the bar told them. You're on the hook when you report something. You want to be right.
Mason
12:46
Any chance the Bucs would look to acquire 2 controllable SP and try to move Nova?
