I don't think it's likely, but I think there's some logic to it. Swing Nova back to the Yankees and pick up Gray.

Where does front office see Glasnow's future?  Do they give him another shot as SP or just hope he can develop enough control to develop more than long reliever?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:49
With his talent — raw as it may be — you don't just stick that guy in a long-relief role for his career. As I said since last September, they needed to put him in a low-leverage situation in the majors (because he clearly wasn't picking up the necessary experience in the minors) so he could build confidence and build trust in his stuff. It has seemed to work this season, to some extent, but I think you have to try him again in the rotation next spring and beyond.

PTBNL isn't going to be a Moises Alou type is it?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:50
It was reported this morning it was a lesser prospect than Taylor Hearn, but maybe it is Moises Alou. I cannot say.
Sean Gentille
12:50
It is literally Moises Alou. Can't say what the Rangers want with a 52-year-old guy, but who knows.

Would you be surprised if the Pirates did not acquire a starter before today's deadline? If Archer doesn't work out, who would be some back-up options? Thanks!
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:51
I would not be surprised, because the Pirates doing nothing major at the trade deadline is not a new thing, but I suspect they'll target starters and try to close a deal on one. Their depth is OK, with Kuhl, Glasnow, Brault, Holmes, but it's not depth you take into a September playoff push and feel good about. If there's a controllable starter you feel you can get at a decent value, I think you do it.

Who is the “big name” traded today that makes us say, “Wow, I didn’t know he was available! That’s crazy.”
Sean Gentille
12:52
Kenny Powers.
Tim
12:52
If a starter is acquired, who gets bumped out of the starting rotation?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:52
Probably Nick Kingham.
Chris Archer
12:53
What would it take for the Pirates to acquire my services?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:53
Hi, Chris. Text me.

12:53
What kind of deal do you think it would take to get Archer?
Sean Gentille
12:54
Is this whole day gonna go by without anybody making actual "Archer" jokes or what?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:54
Rays GM won't call me back to find out, but let's say one of Pirates' top prospects (Meadows?), another from the next tier down (Cruz) and two more lottery-ticket ones. Just a guess.
Scott
12:55
Do you think the package that seems would include Keller, would also include a guy like O'Neil Cruz or Cole Tucker along with another prospect? Or would you lean towards a major league player going back with Keller?
Andy P, NYC
12:55
LAAAAAAAAAAAAAANAAAAAAAAAAAA
Sean Gentille
12:55
There we go.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:56
I think you're talking about for Archer. I don't think the Rays want one of the Pirates' major leaguers unless it's a young starter (Kingham?), and the Pirates don't want to give up any major leaguers they're going to need for a playoff push. Not many players they can afford to part with.
Greg
12:56
If the Pirates get a starting pitcher, any one, would that move any of their current starters to the bullpen?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:56
I've long thought Chad Kuhl would be a blast to watch tossing gas out of the bullpen for an inning or two.
Joe Musgrove has bullpen experience too.
Ferdinand

Doesn't Keone Kela sound like some sort of summer beer from Fat Heads?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:57
It does indeed.
David Borne
12:57
Am I the only one completely uncomfortable with trading Keller for Archer?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:57
No.
Tim
12:57
With the Pirates seemingly focused on adding pitching, do you think they are right to be content with the offense as it is?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:58
Eh, they kind of have to trust that the offense will hold up. Did you expect Elias Diaz to hit this well? Me either! But he is. You hope that Josh Bell and Josh Harrison hit, you hope the outfield stays healthy, and then you add at the edges (bench bat).
Ben
12:58
Now that the Yankees have traded for Lynn and are still going after Archer, is it possible that (if the Yankees get Archer) the Pirates would trade Meadows for Sonny Gray and Happ?
Sean Gentille
12:59
That'd be hilarious. Still -- Meadows for one sorta meh guy with one year of control + a rental seems impossible.
Aside from the fact that it just doesn't seem likely, at all, from the Yankees standpoint.
simon
12:59
With Dickerson down do Pirates look at another OF? ... McCutchen?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
12:59
Simon, you joker!
Sean Gentille
1:00
Wrong Giants OF, dawg. Go get Gorkys.
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:00
Oh, you're serious. No, I don't think they'll bring back McCutchen. I think that marriage had its good days and its bad days, and now it's over and it's never coming back.
Tim
1:00
Non-deadline question; will Dickerson and Bell be back soon?
Stephen J. Nesbitt
1:00
Yes.
Morty

Any word on interest in Gray?  He looks to be odd man out in NYY and a better fit with Pirates approach.  He's affordable and only 28 with a good track record (if not in NY)
