With the #6 pick, the Portland Lumberjacks take P Michel Baez from the Padres.
1:15
Everyone in this draft has a few warts, but there's still potential here for a middle of the rotation starter.
Ryan
1:15
Potential robo umps probably help Collins stick there long term, no?
Connor Byrne
1:15
Good point!
1:16
The Vipers select Braves reliever Luke Jackson at No. 7.
Tim Dierkes
1:19
With the #8 pick, the Portland Lumberjacks take SP Peter Lambert from the Rockies.
John

Will each of you be explaining your thought process with you picks when you are done?    I think that would be interesting to read.
Tim Dierkes
1:19
I'm thinking we'll field questions after the draft and can answer things like that, sure.
Connor Byrne
1:20
The Vipers are going with another reliever at No. 9: Boston's Josh Taylor
Tim Dierkes
1:22
With the #10 pick, the Portland Lumberjacks take SP Joe Palumbo from the Rangers.
Wasn't planning to stock up on SP, but that's the way it's gone so far.

Palumbo over Hernandez... Okay...
Tim Dierkes
1:24
I believe Hernandez is a bit more likely to wind up in the bullpen.

For either of you, are there any similarities between doing a fantasy draft and doing this kind of mock draft?
Tim Dierkes
1:25
We talked about having to fill out rosters which every position covered, like in fantasy, but decided we could just go for best available even if it makes for a lopsided roster.  There are always trades and free agency.

that could be a sneaky good rotation. Most of them might not be the most proven in the majors, but their minor-league numbers aren't the worst. what they're capable of in their minor-league numbers.
Connor Byrne
1:25
The run on relievers continues. With pick 11, Vipers take A's JB Wendelken
Tim Dierkes
1:28
With the #12 pick, the Portland Lumberjacks take 3B/1B/LF Edwin Rios from the Dodgers.
Connor Byrne
1:29
I'm taking D-backs lefty Alex Young at No. 13 to join Genesis Cabrera in my rotation.

I think this draft shows just how thin premium talent is baseball. All relievers and long-shots so far.
Andrew B.
1:29
That’s a great pick! Has 30 HR power potential Rios does
Tim Dierkes
1:30
Young was one of the bigger surprises of 2019.  Definitely someone on my list.
Connor Byrne
1:31
I'm bullish. The age and team control are also nice
Tim Dierkes
1:32
With the #14 pick, the Portland Lumberjacks take P Bryan Abreu from the Astros.

Alex Young is a great pick
Connor Byrne
1:32
Thank you!
Because someone has to take a Pirate, the Vipers select 3B Colin Moran at No. 15
Tim Dierkes
1:34
With the #16 pick, the Portland Lumberjacks take OF Derek Fisher from the Blue Jays.
Connor Byrne
1:35
He's almost 30 and not under control for that long, but I'm a fan: Vipers choose Giants INF Wilmer Flores with pick 17
Hmmm
1:35
Is Fisher still considered to have premium potential, or is this just a shot in the dark?
Tim Dierkes
1:36
More of that former top prospect shine, though he hit pretty well in Triple-A (who didn't?).  Fisher is one of those guys where you wonder how he might do if you give him 650 PA and leave him alone.
1:37
With the #18 pick, the Portland Lumberjacks take P Jorge Alcala from the Twins.
Connor Byrne
1:39
Orioles LHP Tanner Scott is somewhat intriguing. Vipers take him at 19.
Tim Dierkes
1:39
Has to be the most interesting Oriole out there.
Connor Byrne
1:40
Agreed, based on the research I did entering this draft
Tim Dierkes
1:41
With the #20 pick, the Portland Lumberjacks take RP Austin Adams from the Mariners.
Chris
1:42
As an O's fan I can't figure out how Dillon Tate was protected but Ruiz and Mullins weren't and then you take Tanner Freakin Scott?
Tim Dierkes
1:42
MLBTR readers voted in Tate.  I'll let Connor speak for himself, but I definitely valued Scott above Ruiz and Mullins.
Connor Byrne
1:42
The Vipers will gamble on Angels RHP Jaime Barria at 21. He was terrible last year, but he was a credible starter as a rookie in 2018. Hopefully, he'll return to form. Still pretty young.
1:44
Chris, i just like Scott better. Ruiz and Mullins don't do much to excite me. Scott throws hard and has put up some very nice #s in the minors
