MLBTR 2022-23 Offseason Chat: Philadelphia Phillies

I think the AAV's probably going to be a bit higher, but the eight years seems right based on the age through which teams are typically paying players these days.

odds Painter makes the team out of Spring Training?
Steve Adams
1:37
He'll be 20 years old with no AAA experience to speak of, and I fully expect the Phillies to add at least one veteran SP. It's possible he just outperforms everyone else in the SP5 race and wins the job, or that the Phils incur some injuries during camp and need to consider going younger, but I'd be pretty surprised to see it as things stand right now

Just wondering why when you guys did the Royals off season review, you didn't do a Royals off-season chat.
Steve Adams
1:39
Tim (or owner) hadn't suggested doing these team-specific chats yet. I'm going to do a Royals one, still. Probably later this week. (Back to Phillies talk, but that was a very fair  question!)

What are the odds the Phillies sign 2 of the 4 big SS, and play one of them at 3B? Would any of the SS free agents be willing to move to 3B? This assumes Hoskins or Bohm would be traded.
Steve Adams
1:40
I'm all for the Phillies going crazy aggressive, but that would surprise me. I guess you could squint and say Swanson+Bogaerts isn't THAT much more than just signing Turner on his own (well, at least not based on the contracts we predicted), but it's still a lot.

Where do you think the Phillies view Darick Hall fitting in? Stopgap DH and part-time 1B/corner spot that pinch-hits as the season goes on -- or does he have a chance to be a lineup regular?
Steve Adams
1:42
More of the former. They didn't play him against LHP at all (12 PAs vs. LHP; 130 vs. RHP), and he's hit pretty poorly against  left-handers in each of the past two minor league seasons as well.

can The Phillies land a solid starter if they trade Mick Abel? Who can we see them land with Able being traded?
Steve Adams
1:45
If they were willing to trade Abel, I think that'd open the door for them to talk about pretty much any starting pitcher who's actually on the market... but I also don't think they're especially eager to trade him. They weren't last offseason, and everything said by the team/written by their beat this winter has suggested the same is true this time around.

Darick Hall, Marsh and a prospect for Pablo Lopez? Miami has tons of pitching and needs offense
Steve Adams
1:46
Is that "prospect" Andrew Painter? I don't envision Hall having huge value, and Hall+Marsh isn't really close to Lopez, so they'd need to add substantial prospect capital to get there if that's the starting point.

Should the Phillies resign Segura?
Steve Adams
1:47
I tend to think they're much better off putting Stott at 2B and signing one of the shortstops. Segura is a fine player and all, but any of the four shortstops is a pretty solid opportunity to make an upgrade of note that just isn't achieved by re-signing Segura.

I'm 'not sold' on the bullpen despite their
'stellar' work throughout the playoffs.   It
would seem they should look to add 'xtra'
veteran presence down there- Hand was
inconsistent & Robertson just 'so so!'
Steve Adams
1:48
Yeah they definitely need to add to the bullpen, but Dominguez/Alvarado is a really strong start and I think Brogdon's quite underrated.

Thoughts on Phils signing someone like Jose Iglesias and focusing more on bullpen and starter options?
Steve Adams
1:49
If they go heavy after arms, then I'd rather see the Segura/Stott reprisal than see them pursue Iglesias, who I just don't think should be starting for a contending team at this point.
Rodon
1:49
Where do you stand on giving Rodon a 5 year deal?  Is it too risky with his potential arm issues.  He stayed pretty healthy last year.
Steve Adams
1:49
I expect him to get five years.

For Pablo Lopez, would McGarry and Hoskins get the conversation going, or still a long ways iff
Steve Adams
1:50
Marlins aren't trading two years of Lopez for a first baseman with only one year of control -- particularly when he's more expensive than Lopez.

Marsh might interest them, sure, but Marsh alone doesn't get you Lopez.

1:51
We're you surprised Eflin declined his 15 million option?  Does he really beat that salary on the open market?
Steve Adams
1:52
He doesn't need to beat a $15MM salary. If he can get two years at $10MM+ or three years at $9MM+, it's totally defensible that he'd prefer that. He's never had a multi-year deal, pitchers get injured all the time, and he's had chronic knee issues throughout his career.

1:53
Call me crazy, but why not get Adam Frazier for the 2nd base spot? Instead of spending your money on a SS, use it to further better your 4th starter spot and Bullpen? Then you have the money to give Nola the money for an extension and the possibility of Devers next offseason
Steve Adams
1:56
Adam Frazier shouldn't be any contending team's solution coming off the season he just had. You can sign a shortstop and still make nice adds in the fourth spot of the rotation and in the bullpen. It's not an either-or situation. If they were to say, sign Bogaerts at something like $27-28MM per season (which feels feasible), that only pushes their luxury bill to like $218MMish. You can easily add to the bullpen and rotation from there without diving too deep into the luxury territory.

But this is Nola's last season of control. They've got two left of Wheeler. They shouldn't care much about barreling past the luxury thresholds, in my view.

They made it to game 6 of the WS they have plenty of money coming off the books expect a few big time FAs and Verlander with the DD connection is not far fetched, went over the luxury tax for the first time ever and ownership was rewarded, expect some more big things this offseason!
Steve Adams
1:58
That's sort of the entire Offseason Outlook post I wrote, condensed from like 2000 words down into 50 words.  I agree. There's no reason they can't be ultra-aggressive this winter. I don't think any one of Correa, Turner, Bogaerts, Swanson, Verlander or Rodon is particularly far-fetched, on his own.

Would conforto or Bellinger be an option to play RF, pushing Schwarber/Castellanos into a LF/DH platoon? They can always be moved once harper gets back. Wouldn't it be a good thing if everybody was hitting?
Steve Adams
2:01
Well we don't know if Harper's going to be able to throw right away when he's back, so he could be a full-time DH upon returning. An OF with Schwarber-Bellinger-Castellanos patrolling it might be slightly better defensively than what they've got at the moment, but they traded their top prospect to get Marsh and watched him hit .288/.319/.455 as a Phillie.... I'm not sure you want to just casually push him aside to roll the dice on Bellinger, who's far from a lock to rebound at the plate.
Senga
2:01
Do you think the Phillies have any shot to sign Senga?  Haven’t seen us mentioned in any of his rumors.
Steve Adams
2:02
Sure. He's still in the process of taking meetings with teams and such, but his agent's said he wants to go a win-now team in a big market. Phillies are that, and they have the money to outbid anyone if they really love the guy. I don't see any reason it's not possible. Doesn't mean it's likely, but sure they have a chance.

Ross Stripling make sense for the Phills? He is from the area
Steve Adams
2:02
He does. It wouldn't be the sexiest splash in the rotation, but if you're pairing that with one of the big shortstops, that's a nice combination.

Hi Steve. Has there been any talk about the Phillies moving Nick Castellanos?
Steve Adams
2:03
Does getting asked this same question by like 50 people in today's chat count? Haha :)
2:04
I don't see how they could realistically move him right now. You'd be eating a huge portion of money one year into a $100MM contract. Better to just hope he rebounds in year two.
Trader Dave
2:05
Is there a contract out there I could buy if I wanted to trade for a starter (not named Corbin ) ?
Steve Adams
2:05
You could tell the D-backs you'll pay the freight on MadBum, and they'd send him to you gift-wrapped. But I don't think the Phils would be better off for that. If you're going to spend $37MM, just sign Eovaldi or one of the decent No. 3/4 SPs in free agency right now.
