Walker and a lottery guy for Murph and Laureano?
Anthony Franco
3:56
No I think Walker's off limits, essentially
Scott

Seems obvious that the biggest weakness is the Cardinals inability to hit RHP. The Wild Card series made that more obvious with Wheeler/Nola. Lefties haven't really stuck here (Burleson, Gorman, Dickerson, Nootbaar). They also need more production out of the corner OF and DH slots. Is there anyone out there that might be able to fill those two in one?
Anthony Franco
3:57
David Peralta and Ben Gamel are Dickerson type free agents. Andrew Benintendi if they wanted to go three years instead of one for Peralta/Gamel, I guess
DWasson
3:58
Is Donavan rookie of the year?
Anthony Franco
3:58
Nah the Braves guys (Strider/Harris) were too good. He'd be third on my ballot though, really impressive season
JD
3:58
Arenado staying or going?
Anthony Franco
3:59
Guess I haven't definitively answered this yet. My expectation is they'll rework his deal to tack some money on the back end before his opt-out date

Any substance to the Contreras to stl chatter?
Anthony Franco
3:59
I'm sure they'll poke around on the market, but he doesn't feel like their kind of player to me. Questions about his game-calling and ability to manage the staff, think they'd prefer a little more defensive stability
4:00
Obviously if Contreras and Austin Hedges were the same price, they'd take Contreras. But considering Willson's going to cost 4-5 years at $75MM+ and a draft choice, I expect them to go elsewhere
Unknown walker
4:01
Will walker be the next Miguel sano (power thru the roof but never puts his potential together)
Anthony Franco
4:01
Nah I don't think that's fair to Walker, he should be better than Sanó. Even in the minors Sanó was striking out nearly 30% of the time. Walker's career-high strikeout rate is an average 21.6% as a 20-year-old in Double-A

Cards lacked a consistent leadoff hitter. Edman started out great but faded. Carlson still just doesn’t fit in any particular spot in the lineup. Do you think the Cards see it the same way? What do you think they do to address it?
Anthony Franco
4:02
Edman's better suited at the bottom of the lineup, I agree. I actually like the end-of-season arrangement that had Donovan getting a fair bit of leadoff time
4:03
He's not fast obviously but the big thing at the top of the order is getting on base. I don't know if he can keep a .394 OBP moving forward, but something in the .360 range feels perfectly doable with his strike zone feel and contact skills
Mo
4:04
is there a world where Dewitt lets me go after Turner if Nolan exercises his option?
Anthony Franco
4:05
I'd be floored. I know the lack of recent postseason success is frustrating for the fanbase but the annual consistency they've had under the Mozeliak/Girsch tandem (with above-average but not sky high payrolls) is really impressive when pitted against the rest of the league

Was there a reason Ivan Herrera watched most of the time he was in St Louis (The Albert/Yadi/Waino Tour) or did the Cardinals think he was only a back up/insurance policy?
Anthony Franco
4:05
Think it was mostly just deference to Yadi's career achievements
4:07
Even during the playoff games, you could make a strong argument that Molina shouldn't have taken either AB he had in the bottom of the ninth, if you looked at it strictly as the best thing for the 2022 team. Marmol wasn't going to take him out though. Generally feel that was pretty much the case for Herrera in the second half
Darrell Porter

Please tell me that the Cardinals will spend some money on quality catching and done rely on Knizner next season.
Jordan
4:07
Is Andrew Knizner a potential non-tender candidate for the Cardinals in your opinion?
Anthony Franco
4:09
I certainly don't expect them to turn it over to Knizner. Debated putting him on the non-tender candidates, yeah. Didn't do it because he's so cheap and they have the catching depth concerns, but he's likelier to be gone entirely than the Opening Day starter IMO

Who might be courting Arenado right now with $$$$ to have him opt out and sign with his/her team?
Anthony Franco
4:09
Teams can't do this
4:10
Cards have exclusive negotiating rights until five days after the World Series
Less is Mo
4:10
Looks to me that the Cards are like the Angels in a way: They rely on two (aging) superstars (three if you count Waino) and a bunch of ok guys and fill-ins. Sure, the talent level of the farm/younger guys is higher than LAA (whose isn't?) but isn't a decline on the way?
Anthony Franco
4:10
Eh I don't really see it. St. Louis' position player depth is so much better, and they have a really strong track record of developing mid-round picks into productive big leaguers
Omahamadness
4:11
The Cardinals have had a long stretch of great SP that pass the torch to the next generation.  Think Carpenter to Wainwright.  Who does Waino hand the torch to?  I had hoped it would be Flaherty but he seems intent on a max deal when he gets to FA, and will most likely not be a Cardinal for many more years.
Anthony Franco
4:12
Yeah I don't think that guy is in their system right now. They have a number of pitchers who are or should be pretty good, don't think any of them is a budding ace

Thanks for the chat! As a bunch of us Redbird fans are aware, the postseason ended far too soon. Tyler O’Neil was injured AGAIN and was not around to contribute. My hope is that he hasn’t lost value throughout the league. Can you tell me what you think his chances are on being a Cardinal going forward? Thanks again!
Anthony Franco
4:14
Two years of control with a projected arb salary of around $5MM holds value but it's obviously not at the level it was six months ago. He's certainly not going to be non-tendered. A trade is possible but it's not a great time for it, think it's likelier than not he returns
Debbie Downer
4:14
Would you expect Mo to try and extend Montgomery past 2023, or “wait and see”, possibly losing him to free agency?
Anthony Franco
4:16
I like Montgomery but the thing that gives me some pause about extending him is the generally weak slate of lineups he faced down the stretch. His quality starts as a Cardinal were against Pittsburgh, Washington, the Cubs twice and Milwaukee
4:17
So I think he's more the upper-3.00's ERA, #3 type starter he was with the Yankees for the past year and a half than the #2 type he looked like in St. Louis. That was a guy New York felt comfortable trading in large part because they didn't anticipate giving him a start in a playoff series
4:18
He's a good pitcher, no question, but an extension this offseason feels like buying high to me. I wouldn't be super urgent to do it
Debbie Downer
4:18
This season would seem to be the last chance for St Louis and Flahrety to come to an agreement on what he’s worth, and if he’s worth it. Do you agree?
Anthony Franco
4:19
Yeah he'll be a free agent after next year so that's definitely true. Could see them taking offers on him this winter, particularly if Wainwright returns and they do make a run at a top-end starter
Bret

Christian Vázquez to fill catcher, Joc Pederson as OF/DH RHP masher, Waino or if retires, sign Quintana for rotation. Add a veteran reliever. Realistic scenario in your mind?
