Why is there such a recent outburst of free agent action after basically nothing before this month?
Anthony Franco
4:18
Winter Meetings spurred action, with Judge in particular. Felt like everything else was kind of holding up on his decision. Giants deciding whether to pivot to a shortstop, the shortstops (other than Turner) waiting to see if SF would jump in
Prospects
4:18
If free agent costs are rising, does that increase or decrease prospect value? Contenders may prefer trades to signings, but then cheap controllable stars also become more valuable. Seeing fewer trades
Anthony Franco
4:19
I'm not sure it has much of an effect on prospect value but I think it makes serviceable but not great MLB players who are early in their team control years more appealing

Happy Holidays Anthony!  Mark broke this story on MLBTR around 2am Central Time.  Did he just happen to be awake?  Do you guys have a "baseball news alert foghorn?"  Outstanding work by Mark I must say!
Anthony Franco
4:21
I haven't talked to Mark today but I think he just happened to stumble on it and took the initiative to grab it. We don't really have a mechanism in place for this stuff, aside from near 24 hour coverage during the Winter Meetings and the few days before the deadline. If something breaks after our coverage shift is up, we just hope someone happens to be awake and sees it
4:22
Agreed by the way, he did an awesome job on it. That's a monster post to accidentally pick up at 3:30 in the morning and cover as well as he did

4:22
Would Wil Myers and Jean Segura be good fits for Milwaukee?
Anthony Franco
4:23
Myers to play the role McCutchen did this past season makes sense. I think there are better fits for Segura, don't imagine Milwaukee wants to block Turang in the middle infield

Non-playoff teams should have to play for their draft picks in a postseason format for those who miss the playoffs. The winner picks first, runner-up picks second, the consolation game winner picks third, etc. This does two things. 1. It keeps fans engaged, despite being eliminated from the playoffs. 2. It provides additional revenue for the league. Your thoughts?
Anthony Franco
4:24
These games would be rough. I can't imagine players giving anything approaching full effort when playing for draft picks

4:24
What kind of deal is Andrew Chafin looking at and do you see a fit for the Cardinals ?
Anthony Franco
4:25
Sure, Cardinals make as much sense as anyone. Any contender could use Chafin but St. Louis really doesn't have any left-handed certainty in the bullpen, so they're a great fit
Like him at like 2/18. Chris Martin money feels right

4:25
When would be the earliest we see the Orioles trade a top prospect for an MLB ready player? This summer?
Anthony Franco
4:26
Guess it depends what you mean by top prospect. I could see them trading DL Hall this offseason if it nets them a mid-rotation starter with multiple seasons of club control
4:27
Don't think we're talking a Jackson Holliday or Colton Cowser type moving until at least next summer, and probably not at all
Padres
4:27
Hey Anthony, Happy Holidays! Do you think there are trades coming for the Pads? 1st base and LF look a little light.
Anthony Franco
4:28
Cronenworth probably just moves to first. He's an atypical fit but should be fine in the way Luis Arraez worked for the Twins. Agree there needs to be a left field move coming
Lourdes Gurriel or Max Kepler make sense
Taylor Rogers
4:29
What is my market waiting on?
Eddie
4:29
We have always heard that a lefty in the bullpen is essential. Why is a guy like Chafin still available as a free agent?  Has he lost some of his allure.
Anthony Franco
4:29
No idea but it is a little odd that the left-handed relief market just hasn't moved while everything else is flying
4:30
Will Smith is good too, and there's just been nothing on him so far
Bloom

The best thing for the team is the worst thing for the fans. Devers isn't going to re-sign here; So, trading him now makes the most sense, but after Mookie and Xander it's a tough spot. Which do I risk ... trading or not?
Anthony Franco
4:31
Steve just did a thing on this for Front Office subscribers where he made the same sort of argument you did: if you're not extending Devers this offseason, should you trade him before Opening Day to maximize the return?
4:32
I'm not as firm on the idea they have to do it now. I'd rather reappraise where I'm at come deadline time, which is what I think they're more likely to actually do. The optics on trading Devers two months after losing Xander would be really bad, and I don't know that ownership wants that
JustMarlins
4:32
I’d ask you a Marlins question but you only cater to large market teams.
Anthony Franco
4:33
Can confirm I'm willing to answer a question about the Marlins

4:33
Do you see us picking up another SP? Who do you like for us?
Anthony Franco
4:34
Could probably use one more depth starter if they're going back to the six-man rotation. Doubt it's Eovaldi but a Kluber or Greinke type to soak up league average innings makes sense

We see from time to time that you writers like to slip into the threads/comments on the boards....How much of our comments do you guys actually read? Are you all glued to them like we are? Do you guys have burner accounts? Be honest
Anthony Franco
4:35
Ha I do not have a burner account. I scan the comments on most of my own posts, usually don't dip into ones written by other people. Sometimes there are errors in an article that a commenter will point out and I can fix, so they're useful in that sense

What's Amed Rosario going to cost me?
Anthony Franco
4:36
This question was about the Angels but I'll take it more generally
4:37
Don't think Rosario has huge trade appeal and a couple mid-tier prospects probably matches up from a value perspective, but I'm not sure it'll move the needle enough for Cleveland to bother
Rosario seems well-liked there and he's a fine if unexciting everyday player. If they're not under much pressure to reallocate his arbitration salary, probably behooves them just to hold him

4:38
Do the reds find a taker on the Moustakas contract, do they keep him around with the hopes he has a decent 1st half, or should they just cut bait with him like they did Shogo last year?
Anthony Franco
4:38
Think I'd just release him at this point
4:40
He shouldn't be taking AB's from India or Steer, and no one's going to take any notable portion of the money off their hands. Maybe you keep him around as a veteran bench bat in a rebuilding season where young players are getting most of the playing time, but it might be better for all involved to move on and let him get a fresh start somewhere else
