Voit and Andrelton Simmons? I can't rule the Yankees out on Correa/Story entirely until they sign elsewhere but there's enough smoke that I'm buying the stopgap stuff at this point
Need a Lefty
8:23
What do the Phillies have to give up to get Manea from the As? They need a lefty right?
Anthony Franco
8:23
I don't think the rotation's the big issue for the Phils. Manaea would help any team obviously, but two outfield spots, third base and the bullpen are all bigger concerns in my book

We have been to playoffs 4 years ina row and can’t get over the hump.  Who should we be looking for to make us a favorite this year?
Anthony Franco
8:24
I don't think they really see it this way. They went cold for a few games against the Braves. It happens to every team throughout the year, but when it happens in the playoffs, it's a season-ender
That said, I expect them to continue to look for offense, even after the Renfroe deal. I like Nelson Cruz there assuming an NL DH

Any thought of Bobby Witt Jr? Possible 20/20 if he’s on opening day roster
Anthony Franco
8:25
Wouldn't rule that out, Royals seem like one of the teams least likely to be deterred by service time stuff like that
And yeah, I think he could go 20-20
NL Central
8:25
Do Reds, Cubs, Pirates have any chance of competing with top 2 teams next 2-3 years?
Anthony Franco
8:26
Cincinnati seems likeliest to me of that group. Their existing core is still pretty good. It's a tough balance since ownership doesn't seem to want to double down and invest around the margins
But a core group of Winker, India, Stephenson, Votto and the top of that rotation being a contender? Yeah, I buy it
Herb Melnick
8:26
I don't understand the Phillies interest in kiermaier I understand the defense but he's not an upgrade offensively
Anthony Franco
8:27
The defense is so good, and I do think he's a better hitter than Moniak/Haseley
8:28
I'm working on a Phillies' CF thing today actually -- post probably will go up tonight after the chat -- but you also have to consider supply there. The free agent CF market is bad, and I'm not sure any of the teams with stars are actually going to move them
Armchair GM
8:28
Wouldn't Kris Bryant be the ideal free agent signing for the Astros?
Anthony Franco
8:28
I think Story makes more sense, since shortstop's the bigger concern
Twins fan
8:28
Do you think the Twins will allocate funds towards a bat like Kris Bryant since the starting pitching market is pretty well picked over?
Anthony Franco
8:29
Could pivot, I guess, but I didn't really take their seeming inactivity on the starters as a sign they were about to drop $150MM+ on another bat
I think they're more likely to dive into the trade market for a starter
Cleveland Baseball Fan
8:29
Do you think it makes sense to trade one of Plesac, Civale, McKenzie, or Quantrill? With guys like Battenfield, Morris, Allen, Burns and Espino all near-future additions, I think it'd make sense to move one of those big guys for some outfield help now.
Anthony Franco
8:30
Yeah, I think they'll consider exactly this. Cleveland's been so good at pitcher development over the past few years they've made this kind of move a lot
Hmmmm
8:30
Always the later than usual start times or chat days skipped entirely with more and more excuses always
Seriously
8:30
You guys float more excuses as to why you can’t do your chats on time, or even on the day they are supposed to be than the Mets or Yankees float excuses as to why they can’t win a championship
Anthony Franco

Man, tough crowd

8:30
Why cant the Giants sign Correa? They have the money and he would be a great fit!
Anthony Franco
8:31
Just doesn't seem like they want to invest in a nine-figure guy
Seems like they'd prefer to spread the money around
Yastrzemski
8:31
am i on a short leash this season?
Anthony Franco
8:32
I doubt it. He was still OK last season, even if not nearly as good as he was in 2020
I think he'd at least half through the All-Star Break to play through some struggles
Jerry Dipoto
8:32
Do I fill out my rotation via free agency with someone like Rodon or do I go against my word and trade a decent prospect or two for one of the available starters (Gray, Castillo, Manaea, Bassitt, Montas)?
Anthony Franco
8:33
I think the Mariners could get Bassitt or Manaea -- each of whom only have one year of remaining control -- without parting with the kind of prospect they don't want to give up
JR
8:33
What are the chances that we get a DH in both leagues and more importantly will we get a DH that maintains some strategy such as a "double hook?" Let's keep some strategy in the game!
Anthony Franco
8:34
I like the double hook idea but don't think it has much of a chance of passing. Ultimately, both MLB and the MLBPA would probably just prefer the DH
350 innings
8:35
Do you think front offices will ever use analytics to develop pitchers to go deeper into games? As opposed to the current trend of yanking a guy before the 3rd trip through the lineup. It benefits starters and pen to
Anthony Franco
8:36
Teams are definitely using data to try to make players better, and reducing the times through the order penalty by, say, developing a better third pitch is definitely the kind of thing teams are trying
8:37
But the quicker hooks for starters aren't going away entirely, no. Relievers are going to be more effective in shorter stints than most starters, and I don't know that any amount of player development can make that not be the case
