What do the Phillies have to give up to get Manea from the As? They need a lefty right?

I don't think the rotation's the big issue for the Phils. Manaea would help any team obviously, but two outfield spots, third base and the bullpen are all bigger concerns in my book

I don't think they really see it this way. They went cold for a few games against the Braves. It happens to every team throughout the year, but when it happens in the playoffs, it's a season-ender
That said, I expect them to continue to look for offense, even after the Renfroe deal. I like Nelson Cruz there assuming an NL DH

Wouldn't rule that out, Royals seem like one of the teams least likely to be deterred by service time stuff like that

Cincinnati seems likeliest to me of that group. Their existing core is still pretty good. It's a tough balance since ownership doesn't seem to want to double down and invest around the margins
But a core group of Winker, India, Stephenson, Votto and the top of that rotation being a contender? Yeah, I buy it

I'm working on a Phillies' CF thing today actually -- post probably will go up tonight after the chat -- but you also have to consider supply there. The free agent CF market is bad, and I'm not sure any of the teams with stars are actually going to move them

Could pivot, I guess, but I didn't really take their seeming inactivity on the starters as a sign they were about to drop $150MM+ on another bat
I think they're more likely to dive into the trade market for a starter

Do you think it makes sense to trade one of Plesac, Civale, McKenzie, or Quantrill? With guys like Battenfield, Morris, Allen, Burns and Espino all near-future additions, I think it'd make sense to move one of those big guys for some outfield help now.

I doubt it. He was still OK last season, even if not nearly as good as he was in 2020
I think he'd at least half through the All-Star Break to play through some struggles

Do I fill out my rotation via free agency with someone like Rodon or do I go against my word and trade a decent prospect or two for one of the available starters (Gray, Castillo, Manaea, Bassitt, Montas)?

I think the Mariners could get Bassitt or Manaea -- each of whom only have one year of remaining control -- without parting with the kind of prospect they don't want to give up

I like the double hook idea but don't think it has much of a chance of passing. Ultimately, both MLB and the MLBPA would probably just prefer the DH

Teams are definitely using data to try to make players better, and reducing the times through the order penalty by, say, developing a better third pitch is definitely the kind of thing teams are trying

But the quicker hooks for starters aren't going away entirely, no. Relievers are going to be more effective in shorter stints than most starters, and I don't know that any amount of player development can make that not be the case
