There are other announcers besides Davis who I also really like. Goldsmith's one of them

On what signing date is a team signing a free agent with a QO no longer required to forfeit a draft pick? I’m wondering if teams signing Correa and others might avoid the draft pick penalty if the lockout extends until July or so. I suppose the rule would could be changed though…
Anthony Franco
8:38
It's after the date of next year's draft. Teams aren't going to wait until then to sign Correa
8:39
We've seen mid-tier free agents who got hit with a QO wait that out, but never a superstar
Mega-deals
8:39
Between Otani/Soto, who do you think is more likely to sign an extension before they reach free agency?
Anthony Franco
8:39
Ohtani feels likelier but I'd guess they both get to FA
Randy Marsh

what moves will the cardinals make? They need a LH bat to go with the 2 switch hitters. Do you think they will spend to get Schwarber and rotate him in at DH?  Before Matz  Mo and DeWitt haven’t made the best decisions with their bigger $ free agent acquisitions: Fowler & Cecil immediately come to mind
Anthony Franco
8:39
Feels like bullpen's the bigger priority, and they don't have a ton of payroll room relative to where they were this year
8:40
Not saying they couldn't get Schwarber, but I wonder if they'd prefer to get a look at Lars Nootbaar and/or Nolan Gorman first and reevaluate at the trade deadline
Mr. Red
8:40
Any ideas who the Reds get to replace Castellanos in right field? I'm not sold on the in house options.
Anthony Franco
8:40
Have to get somebody, I agree. Doesn't seem they're spending much, but maybe a Tommy Pham type?

8:41
How does the Atlanta Braves who just won the world series get to draft ahead of teams that didn't make the playoffs Jay's and Mariners
Anthony Franco
8:41
Draft order's just the inverse of the regular season record, not consideration of playoff results
Boomhauer
8:41
What happens to Dejong this year? Does Mo trade him?
Anthony Franco
8:42
I thought they would heading into the offseason, but that we haven't heard anything about it since makes me think he's probably opening the year in STL
The Danimal
8:43
Who's your breakout player in each league for next year?
Anthony Franco
8:43
Alex Verdugo in the AL. NL, maybe we get a star-level season from Jazz Chisholm?
I think Luis Urías will be really good too
Dodgers
8:44
Is Julio Urias the most underrated ace caliber pitcher in the big leagues?
Anthony Franco
8:44
Is he underrated? He finished 7th in CY voting this year
I think he's properly rated as awesome
Georgia Brad
8:44
What do you expect the Braves to do after the lockout?
Anthony Franco
8:45
A lot just revolves around Freeman. Re-signing him is going to be the priority and would probably absorb the rest of their spending capacity
8:46
If he walks, then a new first baseman's a must. Upgrading the outfield (even if just by bringing back Rosario or something) should be a priority

As an O's fan, I'd like to see them extend Trey Mancini. But if they trade him, what about a reunion with Buck in NY? He could DH and spell Alonso at 1B. The O's need infield help, so maybe McNeil or Davis as part of the return. Mancini deserves a shot to play with a winner.
Anthony Franco
8:46
I don't think the Mets would give up either McNeil or Davis for Mancini
8:47
I'm rooting for the guy and think he'll be pretty good in 2022, but he wasn't great this year. That's understandable given all he's been through personally, but it's probably not the right time for a trade
Padres Planner
8:47
What prospect would need attached to move Myers (or at least most of Myers contract)?
Anthony Franco
8:48
I don't have a specific name, but at only one year, it wouldn't have to be from the Abrams/Hassell group. Probably a guy in the 8-15 range in the system
Doodahman
8:48
Do you think the Rays target a right-handed bat /DHor first base type?
Anthony Franco
8:49
Yeah, I think they'll look into it with Cruz hitting free agency (and not coming off a particularly good showing in Tampa)
Stanton

Thanks for being here! Love MLBTR
Anthony Franco

Ha, appreciate that. Always enjoy these!

What’s a trade package the Angels could give for Luis Castillo?
Anthony Franco
8:50
Reports on the Reds' willingness to actually pull the trigger on a Castillo deal are pretty variable
8:51
I think it's likelier than not he starts the season in Cincinnati. But in the interest of not completely ducking the question, something around Detmers and Jordyn Adams or Arol Vera?
Ken
8:51
Kershaw: 1 year deal 20 million with incentives. What say you?
Anthony Franco
8:51
I think that makes more sense for the Dodgers than the Rangers
But I'd be really interested in that if I were a contender

Read a couple of articles today about the effect Covid continues to have on the NFL and NHL. Any thoughts about what how it might affect the upcoming MLB season? Might we see half-filled stadiums again or teams requiring fans proof of vaccination?
