But if I had to guess, I think they'll revisit talks with the Rays on Kiermaier
Jays all the way!
6:52
Any chance the Jays get Hassell in a deal with the Padres and Myers contract? Maybe Trent Thornton going the other way?
Anthony Franco
6:53
I can't see the Padres giving up Hassell to dump the final year of Myers' contract. They were discussing him as part of the Hosmer/Gallo talks with the Rangers last year, but that's a longer-term deal they'd be getting some help on and netting an All-Star player in return
John F
6:53
Top 5 managers right now?
Anthony Franco
6:53
Man, I have no idea. Evaluating managers from the outside is impossible
6:55
I think I'd say some group of Kevin Cash, Craig Counsell, Alex Cora, Gabe Kapler and Bob Melvin in some order but it's tough to parse out how much of that is just ex post facto logic because their teams tend to be good
John
6:55
Which players get hurt the most from a lockout? Fringe players?
Anthony Franco
6:56
I think the still unsigned mid-tier free agents will probably be hurt by the frenzy to wrap up the offseason whenever it happens
Also, the group of prospects who got added to the 40-man to avoid selection in the Rule 5
6:57
Take Randy Rodriguez of the Giants as an example. He's yet to reach Double-A, got added to their 40-man (and thus the union) in late November
6:58
Now he can't communicate with team personnel for the duration of the lockout even though he's nowhere close to being an established big leaguer. That can't be great for development
UK Baseball fan (seriously)
6:58
Do you ever see the cancelled Cubs - Cardinals London Series game from 2020 being rescheduled? I was gutted it got “postponed” owing to the pandemic.
Anthony Franco
6:59
Hmm, I don't know about those teams specifically but I'd be surprised if they don't go back to London at some point
At least we have hockey
6:59
Do you see a world where baseball falls to where boxing/nascar are?
Anthony Franco
6:59
No, at least not anytime soon
Kevin
7:00
Would ONeill fo Gallo be a fair trade?  It would solve the lefty problem for Cards and take care of left field for the Yankees
Anthony Franco
7:00
Cardinals wouldn't do it
At least we have hockey
7:00
I know this is being simple minded, but why can’t they agree to extend 1 more season under last years cba and work on a new deal in the offseason?
Anthony Franco
7:01
I don't know that's in anyone's interest really. The league thinks it has the upper hand w/r/t to negotiating leverage, while the players were really irritated with certain aspects of the previous CBA
7:03
It's also not like they didn't know this was coming and just ran out of time. They could've negotiated throughout last season; they barely did. They could've negotiated throughout the lockout (or the league could not have instituted a lockout in the first place). There was just always going to be a conflict, it's unfortunate they're not making any progress
Tony Franco
7:03
Thanks for chatting Anthony! I know you can't stop watching cuz it's your livelihood. But, if you weren't working in baseball, could you ever get fed up enough to say goodbye to baseball over the lockout and especially if they miss games and a whole season?
Anthony Franco
7:04
Entirely, no, I'm in for the long haul. But if this weren't my job, I think I'd tune out the lockout news and just watch some combination of college baseball, hockey and tennis until MLB games came back
Juan Soto
7:04
Was a shorter deal buying out 2-3 FA years (similar to Trout’s) discussed? Seems risky to walk away from $350MM
Anthony Franco
7:05
No indication it was discussed but I doubt Soto would have any interest
7:06
Between last year's salary and this year's arb projection, Soto will have banked quite a bit of money. I don't think he feels a ton of financial pressure, and he seems more than content to play things out year by year and wait for free agency
Anthony Rizzo
7:06
Where do I sign - do I re-sign with the Yanks or go back to the Cubs? Or, maybe another team...please, tell me where I'm going to be!
Anthony Franco
7:06
Believe I picked him to the Braves at the start of the offseason. I'll stick with that
Steve
7:06
Garrett Whitlock’s pretty nasty out of the pen.  Can he a #2 SP for the Red Sox?
Anthony Franco
7:08
Scouts saw him more as a #4/5 type as a prospect. I think he could still do that but is probably more valuable in last year's bullpen role
Hi
7:08
mets trade for Bryant or not worth it?
Anthony Franco
7:08
I think they'll focus on pitching and maybe catcher. They've got an abundance of third base/corner outfield options as is
Dan P
7:08
Will the Astros chase more bullpen help?
Anthony Franco
7:09
Yeah, getting another lefty in particular seems like it should be a goal
7:10
With Raley leaving, it's basically just Blake Taylor right now
Blicketty McBlick Blick
7:10
He makes a ton of money, he's getting older and is starting to get injury-prone...so do you feel there is any chance that the Angels trade Trout?
Anthony Franco
7:10
No
MLB
7:10
Why is increasing the CBT threshold such a non starter for MLB?  Large revenue teams would embrace it and most teams never come near it.
Anthony Franco
7:10
This is kind of where I'm at. I've been surprised by the league's stubbornness on the CBT, more so than on expanding Super Two, cutting revenue sharing, etc.
7:11
If Dick Monfort, just to pick an example, doesn't want to exceed the CBT, he can just not do it
