Could the mets and pete alonso look into a new contract / extension? Pete has cooled off a bunch since his torrid start. If they did what would the terms look like.
Mark P
9:20
If it isn't likely that a player like Schwarber would sign an in-season extension, there is a zero point zero chance of a Scott Boras client signing such an extension
9:21
Given all the drama that went into the Alonso/Mets talks last winter, neither side wants that happening midseason when the Mets are trying to compete for a division title
MLB Tradeberhood Watch
9:22
I just realized how stacked the Padres rotation is, besides Cease and King do you thing any other of the pitchers (Darvish, Hart, Vasquez)  could be traded? Maybe Musgrove after he gets back?
Mark P
9:23
Musgrove will miss the whole season due to Tommy John surgery, and naturally has no trade value right now.  And since Cease/King are both free agents after the year, it's unlikely San Diego would move any pitchers they view as candidates for the 2026 rotation and beyond.
IDK - 3rd base!

If the Braves extend a QO to Ozuna, what are the odds he accepts? He's expressed a desire to stay in ATL & I'm not sure he'd approach that AAV, but could potentially be worth more overall money on 3-3 year deal. Of course he also comes with some off-field baggage
Mark P
9:26
Ozuna has already been issued a QO earlier in his career, he can't be issued another one.

As to whether or not the Braves might keep him on another one-year pact, maybe?  If Ozuna is still hitting well, it'll be a consideration.  Counter-arguments include a desire to open up the DH spot for more overall roster flexibility, and perhaps the Braves' overall need/want to trim payroll

After watching Tobias Myers today v Minnesota, looks like the Brewer brain trust made a boo boo in recalling Tobias as opposed to Misiorowski.
Mark P
9:28
Calling up a top pitching prospect and asking him to make his MLB debut against a red-hot Twins team is a real "throw him into the deep end" kind of move.  No surprise Myers was the choice today.

With the Baez renaissance could the Tigers trade him if he keeps it up?
Mark P
9:30
Our own Nick Deeds wrote a poll post about Baez the other day, noting that while his resurgence is a great story, the sky-high BABIP (.355) indicates some level of luck is going into his performance.  Teams aren't going to let a hot month erase the previous three months, so in short, Baez's trade value is still pretty negligible.

Devers is a 300 million dollar DH I think any return for him would be extremely disappointing to sox fans
Mark P
9:32
It's not like the Red Sox viewed him as a long-term third baseman at the time of that extension.  The feeling was that Devers would move off 3B eventually, though obviously it seems to have happened a lot earlier than Devers personally felt it was necessary.

Off-season pipe dream: Would the Orioles deal Adley ? Would Sanchez and another pitching prospect other than Painter..
Mark P
9:34
As much as Rutschman has struggled since the midpoint of last season, I think we're a long ways away from the Orioles actually thinking about moving him (or any of their young core).

This has been as rough a start as possible for the O's, but blowing things up and restarting a rebuild is absolutely not on anyone's radar.
Elias
9:36
Am I really going with the third base coach, or is he just keeping the seat warm while I talk to Maddon or Ross or whoever?
Mark P
9:37
This clearly wasn't a move that Elias expected to be making on May 17 (or at all), so I don't think there's any larger plan to bring in a veteran manager.  Now, that would be the kind of decision that would have to come from ownership, so it ultimately comes down to how much of a shakeup Rubenstein feels the Orioles need.

Is Kristian Campbell being mismanaged by having him bat cleanup and learn a new position while in a horrific batting slump?
Mark P
9:39
We mentioned earlier how rookies can taper off once the league gets some data on them, and we might well be seeing that with Campbell right now.  Not sure the batting order spot or some 1B reps are as big of a factor as the simple fact that it's really hard to hit at the Major League level, especially for a rookie
World Series Darkhorse
9:41
Who is your favorite Dark Horse to win the World Series this year?  Mets?
Mark P
9:43
How are the METS a dark horse team?!

The Royals were my pick to win the American League this year, and even though they made the playoffs in 2024, that's more of a hot take than feeling good about the Mets' chances

9:44
Can Tyler Mahle keep this up?
Mark P
9:45
No, as all the secondary metrics and probably just common sense would suggest.  Mahle has been a good pitcher in the past and it's not a big surprise that he's doing better now that he's healthy, but he's not going to suddenly start posting Bob Gibson ERAs or something

9:47
If Alcantra continues his struggles do you still think the Marlins will entertain a trade for him this season or hope for a team to buy in on his potential in the off-season
IDK - 3rd base!
9:47
Could Alcantara be had at a relative bargain by a pinching savvy team who might pull him back into ace form?
Mark P
9:48
Miami's not going to move their biggest trade asset at "a relative bargain," however.  If Alcantra can't get it together by the deadline, the Marlins will keep him into the offseason and possibly into next year in the hopes of a rebound.
9:49
Trading him for pennies on the dollar only to see him re-emerge as an ace on a new team would be doubly crushing for the Marlins
Rich E
9:50
Why call up lawlar and give him 1 pinch hit AB for the first 4 games. Nothing shows confidence like that, already made this call up a no go as he will be back in the minors in days.
Mark P
9:51
It's tricky since the D'Backs already have a loaded infield and DH situation, so there isn't any obvious room for Lawlar to play unless a left-hander is on the mound and Pavin Smith is sitting.  It's a bit "nice problem to have," but you're right, bringing Lawler up just to have him sit on the bench isn't helping anyone
Cristopher Sanchez
9:52
How many pitchers have more trade value right now?  Contract is a bargain with lots of control left and he's done nothing but deal since he moved into the rotation full-time.
Mark P
9:53
He's been an outstanding pickup and development story for the Phillies organization.  His value is indeed sky high, and Sanchez has already established himself as a big part of the current and future rotation

I think you're swell, Mark.
Mark P
9:54
Aw, thanks!
Dodgers
9:54
Who can the Dodgers pick up at the trade deadline ?
Mark P
9:55
Pitching will be the focus, since the Dodgers' arms just keep getting injured
Josh Smith
9:57
Is there a chance the Rangers trade me if Seager comes back and hits well?
Mark P
9:57
Basically zero chance.  Smith is a controllable player and he adds so much to the roster as a utilityman and (this season especially) as a hitter
JeffyM
10:00
What would you say was the worst free agent signing of the winter? And why is it Anthony Santander?
Mark P
10:01
LA might not be feeling great about Blake Snell, but Santander's Toronto tenure is indeed off to a very rough beginning.  The Jays have enough holes in their lineup as it is that when one of their "sure thing" hitters is in a deep slump, the whole offense kind of collapses on itself
Chris
10:03
Are all the Dodgers pitching injuries going to cause a roster crunch in the offseason when the 60 day IL goes away?
