Primary position the Mariners need to fix in order to get into the playoffs?
Anthony Franco
5:32
I don't think it's a positional need so much as the need for an injection of offense somewhere
Bring in someone like Bryant, move him around the diamond a bit but just add a plus bat to the lineup
Zack
5:33
Ok how about Conforto. What's his contract looking like and where could he sign?
Anthony Franco
5:34
He's one of the toughest guys on the market to peg. I think he might end up taking a one-year deal in the $20-25MM range to try to rebuild value and test the market again next winter
If I had to pick a destination, Philly?
Bryan
5:34
Favorite ballpark?
Anthony Franco
5:35
PNC of the ones I've been to but that's only like a third of the league so far

Who is your favorite player (position and pitcher) to watch because he does all the little things well, not just because they mash home runs, or throw 100 mph
Anthony Franco
5:36
Hmm, I don't know if Alex Bregman's too good for the spirit of this question, but I love watching him hit. Strike zone awareness is unreal
5:37
There's not really a pitcher that's jumping out at first glance. Late career Greinke maybe?

Holy Grail Tavern in Cincy is good to eat at.

Pack your lunch!
Anthony Franco
5:38
Lol varying takes on the quality of food in Cincinnati but there's one recommendation for the guy who asked earlier

Casey Mize for Jared Walsh?
Anthony Franco
5:39
Tigers aren't doing that
Joe
5:39
Which White Sox youngster should I absolutely definitely not get attached to emotionally (because he's likely to be traded sooner rather than later)?
Anthony Franco
5:39
Probably Gavin Sheets or Jake Burger. I don't think they're moving any of the core guys (Jiménez, Anderson, Moncada, Robert, Vaughn, etc.) any time soon
A Free Agent
5:40
If you're a fringe MLB free agent, what's the down side to just signing a minor league contract?  You get to play in AAA while the lockout lingers, with a reasonable shot to get called up once the big boys start.  And if the season gets wiped out entirely, you got to play instead of having your career stagnate for a year.
Anthony Franco
5:40
Just don't want to give up the opportunity at getting a big league deal after the lockout
If you think you have a realistic shot at a 40-man spot and a guaranteed salary when teams can offer those again, you're probably going to wait for it

Have the MLBTR writers ever met each other in person?
Anthony Franco
5:41
Can't speak for everyone else on staff, but I've only met Steve in person

Which team has the best coaching staff in the mlb? How important is the manager in the mlb compared to the manager/head coach in other leagues
Anthony Franco
5:42
I think it's less important relative to other leagues that have coaches drawing up specific plays and moving multiple players into different areas of the field/ice/court to create opportunities that wouldn't otherwise exist
5:43
Baseball's more static, and so the manager is a little less involved in the play-to-play action
I think the bigger role of the MLB manager/coaching staff is in keeping players confident and in tune mechanically, and that's stuff that's really hard to evaluate from outside the organization

Is something like Volpe, Torres, and Medina enough to get Olson?
Anthony Franco
5:44
I think that'd do it but wouldn't expect the Yankees to offer that

Cincinnati - Taste of Belgium, Montgomery Inn, Moerlein

A few more Cincinnati food picks

I know you “Don’t have favorite teams” but what teams do you follow? Now or earlier in life
Anthony Franco
5:46
I grew up a Cubs fan because my dad's a Cubs fan. Lost interest in baseball in high school, then became a Diamondbacks fan when I got back into it (just as the Cubs finally emerged from their prolonged futility to win a World Series)
5:47
But yeah, writing about the sport pretty much killed the team allegiance thing. I didn't purposefully try to extinguish team-specific fandom so much as it went away organically as I started thinking about how all 30 teams might behave and trying to approach everything hyper-rationally

Is schwarber coming back here? He was great in Boston
Anthony Franco
5:47
I think they'll make a run at him after the lockout. Wouldn't at all surprise me if he goes back

Is dansby swanson the ss of the future for the braves of is this his last season with the braves
Anthony Franco
5:48
Yeah this is a really interesting one. Reports indicated the Braves kicked around the idea of going after Correa earlier in the offseason, although it's not clear how earnestly they've considered that
5:49
I do lean more towards an extension with Swanson than letting him walk. It's one of those situations where I could actually see the hometown discount thing coming into play and it being a good value decision for Atlanta

Will a shorter season benefit teams with young pitching staffs who will have less concern for an innings limit?
