Perhaps, although if it's significantly shortened, then you might just run into the same workload management stuff in 2023
5:50
More than anything, I think a shortened season just helps bad teams. Smaller schedule means more variability in results, which gives below-average teams a better shot at getting hot early and hanging around the playoff mix than they'd have if they played 162
Competitive Integrity
5:50
If we're talking competitive integrity, we could also ask how expanded play-offs factor into that. Would it really be served by a sub-.500 team in the Fall Classic, as nearly happened in 2020?
Anthony Franco
5:51
If they go to 14 on the playoffs, I'd hope they put in something to weigh the odds heavily in favor of the teams with more regular season success
5:52
Like the union's ghost win concept, for example
The 2020 one was anomalous, and tossing everyone into a three-game series to start the playoffs is just stupid. I assume that was a one-time thing
Greinke
5:53
Am I retiring?
Anthony Franco
5:53
Don't believe so. Bob Nightengale reported in November he was hoping to sign with an NL team this winter
5:54
Not sure why the league would matter since there's going to be a universal DH (maybe he just likes the NL cities more?) but at the very least that'd indicate he was leaning towards playing at that point

Who plays RF for the ChiSox?
Anthony Franco
5:54
They also make sense on Conforto, but I doubt they'll spend at that level
I think it's likelier they sign someone like Pederson to platoon with Engel

What team will be most active once the lockout is over
Anthony Franco
5:55
Probably the A's from a seller's perspective
Yankees, Phillies, Twins, Red Sox, Padres all stand out as teams that could be pretty active in trying to get better

Why did you come to MLBTR? What was it like when you started?
Anthony Franco
5:56
Joined part-time in the summer of 2019 doing weekend coverage. Got bumped up to full-time work on the weekdays last June. It was pretty much the same setup as it is now -- Tim, Steve, Jeff and Connor had curated it all before I got here
(Aside from there not being transactions right now obviously)
5:57
I'd read the site for a long time before that, always felt like I learned a lot and it just seemed like a job I'd enjoy if I got the opportunity. I have, although again, the last couple months haven't been fun (through no fault of MLBTR's)

Jeff Ruby's steakhouse is a good place to eat in Cincy!

Do you think that Gavix Lux has more defensive innings in the infield or outfield this year?
Anthony Franco
5:58
Probably the infield. I'd guess he sees more time at second base than anywhere else

I saw a MLBTR writer say that MLB had the power to continue the 2022 season under the previous CBA (rather than kickstart the lockout). Why didn’t they do that?
Anthony Franco
5:59
They do have that authority, but leagues preemptively lock out during the offseason now so as not to give the players the opportunity to strike midseason
6:00
Manfred has talked about the lockout being a means of controlling when work could stop. In that regard, he's correct
He's also talked about it being a means to jumpstart negotiations. It clearly didn't serve that purpose

Thoughts on James Karinchak?
Anthony Franco
6:01
Still believe he'll be good, albeit a little inconsistent because of control woes
Bill Pence

Would a 12 million for 1 yr deal be enough to snag Greinke?
Anthony Franco
6:01
That's about where I'd set the O/U
Ryan
6:02
Which player has the most trade value in baseball? Least trade value?
Anthony Franco
6:03
I'd probably say Acuna for most value, although you could argue that the injury should knock him below someone like Vlad or Wander Franco
I'd have to think more on least

Are the angels signing Story?
Anthony Franco
6:04
I'd be surprised if they do but I think they should consider it

Thoughts on Dick Monfort?
Anthony Franco
6:05
Doesn't seem to have a great feel for how to contextualize the Rockies versus the rest of the league
6:06
So he consistently overrates the talent on the Colorado roster and has a generally insular hiring process regarding the front office

Wouldn't soto have more trade value than Vlad and Franco?
Anthony Franco
6:07
Sure, could argue this too, although he's got one fewer year of control than Vlad and Franco's around forever
