To your point, I think we've seen teams place a ton of emphasis on movement in recent years as that became more measurable. How backspinning fastballs at the top of the strike zone, particularly from a lower release height, can help that pitch play above its velocity, etc.

Does Gorman and Herrera get it done for John Means?
Anthony Franco
6:41
I can't see the Cards giving up that much
Minorkle
6:42
Do the Twins trade Gary Sanchez?
Anthony Franco
6:42
If they're out of midseason, no reason not to since he's an impending FA
Guardian
6:42
Cleveland resigned Jose. You lose.
Anthony Franco
6:43
I guess? I didn't expect them to, so sure, but he also took another significant discount to stay there
6:44
Good for them though. One-franchise superstars are rare and it's great for the fanbase that he'll be there for the entirety of his prime

Over/under 15 starts for the Padres for Gore this year.
Anthony Franco
6:44
I'll take the over
Evan
6:45
Could the Braves now extend Jackson since he will be out or will they have to wait till the off season?
Anthony Franco
6:46
Luke? They can extend him now but I doubt they want to
Nelson Cruz
6:46
Am I likely to get shipped to some team in the playoff hunt at the trade deadline?
Anthony Franco
6:46
Yeah I'd be surprised if he doesn't change teams

Could a team essentially just trade money for a player? E.g. many teams don’t have the farm for B Reynolds but could they just buy him from the Pirates?
Anthony Franco
6:47
You do sometimes see guys traded for cash consideration but those are always super fringy players
6:48
I'm sure there's some sort of limit, but I don't know it off the top of my head. But no, the Pirates can't trade Reynolds to the Yankees for $200MM
SDP
6:48
Will SD acquire more offense soon? Before July?
Anthony Franco
6:50
I'm sure they'd love to add another outfielder. Could see them taking a shot on another role player type but it's tough to see a huge acquisition given the payroll constraints

Who would you consider to be a dark-horse contender to win the World Series this season?
Anthony Franco
6:50
Anyone who makes the playoffs is a World Series contender
6:51
Are the Twins a dark-horse playoff contender? Reds maybe?
I don't think either of those teams is winning the World Series, but could they grab a Wild Card spot and make a run? Sure

We say the first 6 games don't matter but would you rather your team start 6-0 or 0-6? Every game counts. We wouldn't have tight finishes at the end if not for those first few games.
Anthony Franco
6:52
Sure, these are different questions
6:53
The games matter because they all count. Banking wins is important. They're not all that meaningful for projecting what teams will do in the future
Ray
6:54
Looked like there was going to be a longer delay to the start of the season. What finally gave?
Anthony Franco
6:55
Pressure of canceling games and not being able to fit 162 on the schedule finally arrived. If they truly had to shorten the season -- not threaten to, as MLB did, but actually run out of time in the summer -- then it would've been so much more challenging
6:56
Because in addition to all the actual CBA stuff they were fighting over, you'd have debates about whether players should be paid and receive service time for the games that were scrapped
Deadlines spur action

What's your take on Tylor McGill? His delivery change seems to have added a few mph on his fastball, and his changeup  looks great so far.
Anthony Franco
6:57
Yeah I'm intrigued. I thought Megill was a solid 3/4 type coming into the season, but he might be better than that if he's holding 96-97
Frank
6:58
Considering where everyone is picking the Giants to finish i guess you could consider them to be a dark horse  world series winner.
Anthony Franco
6:58
Ha, I don't know how bold it is to say that a team that won 107 games last year could be a World Series contender
I don't think the Giants are better than the Dodgers, but I'd be surprised if they miss the playoffs
AA
6:58
Should I be concerned about the starters so far? I tried but failed to add a starter at/near the top. Who would be available that’d fit the need here?
Anthony Franco
6:59
(Alex Anthopoulos, Braves GM)
I think it's fine for now. I still buy Kyle Wright as a capable #4, Fried-Morton-Anderson is a good top 3
7:00
Maybe they need some back-end help eventually but they've got plenty of options (Elder, Strider, Ynoa, Davidson) to throw at it right now and see if anyone emerges
Alright everyone, that's all I've got time for tonight
