Anthony Franco

Yeah, not for a whole lot, but somebody would want him if he's pitching like this
Evan Stevens
5:20
Sean Murphy to SF for Luciano. Who says no?
Anthony Franco
5:21
This would be fun but I can't see the Giants doing it  while they also have Bart
Wasted
5:21
Which is more surprising to you, the Pirates in 3rd place or the Jays just 2 games over .500
Anthony Franco
5:22
Toronto, I guess. If the Pirates were in third place because they were playing well, that'd be different. Didn't expect the Reds to be this bad but everyone got hurt and they left themselves with a top-heavy roster

Sup Anthony! Pads are loaded with arms but the outfielders are barely hitting their weight. Likelier scenario: maintain status quo with rotation depth or trade for an OFer?  Resigning Musgrove and Manaea has become this fan's priority #1. What's your take?
Anthony Franco
5:23
I think they might trade Snell. Thins the rotation depth obviously but clears some breathing room vs. the CBT to go get another bat
I'd prioritize Musgrove over Manaea. Don't expect they'll re-sign both but one of them or Clevinger feels likely
Guillermo Faro

Better chance Oakland or Detroit makes the playoffs?
Anthony Franco
5:24
Neither
Oakland, I guess. Like 0.2% to 0.1%
Derek
5:24
What do you think Kyle Hendricks would bring back?
Anthony Franco
5:26
Not enough for the Cubs to move him. It's a second straight season where the results aren't great. He's making $14MM next season and it's not the kind of arsenal teams dream on
5:27
I do still think there's surplus value in a world where Zack Greinke's making $13M, but there's not a ton
Kyle
5:27
How do you explain guys like Kieboom, Hiura and Torkelson absolutely destroying Triple A pitching, but looking completely lost in the majors? Is the pitching really that much better or is it at least partly mental?
Anthony Franco
5:28
I'd guess it's a bit of both, particularly for guys who aren't playing every day and pressing to try to earn at-bats. For the most part, though, I'd lean toward the gap in pitching quality just being that big

What are the chances the Friars go after Wilson Contreras? Maybe Lamet and Alfero or Nola for him.
Anthony Franco
5:28
Cubs aren't going to want veteran players like that
Nolan Arenado
5:29
Any chance I opt out after this season?
Anthony Franco
5:29
I was wondering this today actually. If he wanted to, I think he'd beat the 5/144 that remains on his contract after this season
5:30
But he also pretty quietly declined his opt-out last year. He's talked a few times about how happy he is in St. Louis and how he just wants to be somewhere he can win year in and year out
5:31
So based on all that stuff, I don't think he'll opt out. But from a strictly financial perspective, there's an argument he should
Gregg
5:32
Tigers look real bad and there's not much in the pipeline in terms of bats.  Would it make sense to ship any of these young arms (like Skubal) for a few prospects?  Could they get a bunch if they do?
Anthony Franco
5:33
I think that's too rash. This year's probably lost, but we're not at the point where you blow up the developing core already
Tim
5:33
You have to assume the Angels have to upgrade 1 or 2 of the middle infielders they have by the trade deadline?
Anthony Franco
5:33
Yeah I think they'll do something there
John McGraw
5:33
First manager to be fired this year is _____________?
Anthony Franco
5:34
I don't think we'll get an in-season firing, but each of Matheny, David Bell, Lovullo and Girardi seem (entirely speculatively) like they could be in hot water at the end of the season
Obviously subject to how their teams play over the next five months, for Girardi in particular

It seems like there’s a lack of quality primary center fielders across the league…do you agree? And do you think it will force any kind of market adjustment for the position?
Anthony Franco
5:35
Yes and it's part of the reason I'm a lot more bullish than either of Steve or Tim on Brandon Nimmo's upcoming free agency
Worried Fan
5:36
Ke’Bryan Hayes, Bryan Reynolds (for however long), ONeil Cruz, Nick Gonzales, and a team not willing to spend top, or even remotely average dollar on free agents…..I don’t see a bright horizon soon in terms of post season runs or legit title hope, am I wrong?
Anthony Franco
5:37
Henry Davis and Roansy Contreras are there too. I'm a little concerned about the long-term pitching outlook in Pittsburgh beyond Contreras but I think the position player core is coming along as hoped
2023 isn't going to be good either, but there's a path to playoff contention the year after if they find some more arms
Chris
5:38
Best player to get traded before the deadline?
Anthony Franco
5:39
May end up being Bogaerts, although that's going to be determined entirely on how the Sox play the next couple months
I'd probably say Montas right now
Chris
5:39
Do giving big contracts ever work?
Anthony Franco
5:40
Scherzer was awesome in Washington, Harper just won the MVP while Wheeler was the Cy Young runner-up
You can cherry-pick examples of deals that did and did not work. Paying guys deep into their 30's usually doesn't pan out, which is why teams by and large don't do it anymore
