Can you see Joe Madden settling in for a Front Office job or do you think he still needs to be a guy who wears a uniform (bench coach, roving instructor, et al.)?
Anthony Franco
4:55
Ha, this username's pretty good
Maddon told Ken Rosenthal he wanted to keep managing after the Angels fired him. I expect he'll continue searching for those opportunities
Terry F
4:56
do you think Gallo's days in New York are numbered? I like the guy as a person but them batting him 9th, switching him back to RF, announcers employed by the team basically openly criticizing him on TV, plus preseason reports of talks with SD make me suspect it
Anthony Franco
4:57
Yeah I'd be surprised if he gets moved. I get the thinking behind it but he's starting to make more of an impact from a power perspective now and I don't know how many better right fielders they'd be able to acquire in his place
Da' Reds
4:58
Whom do the Reds trade and what positions do they target in return?
Anthony Franco
4:58
They'll trade Drury, Solano, probably one of Castillo or Mahle and just target the best talent they can find regardless of position
4:59
Maybe they'd be disinclined to land a top-tier catching prospect for one of the starters because of Stephenson, but otherwise, just get the best players they can and sort out positional logjams later
Kyle Farmer feels like he'll go too

Put yourself in the STL Front office. Who do you trade/who do you trade for to make this team better!
Anthony Franco
5:01
Tough team to improve since they're good everywhere basically. They could stand to get better production at catcher, but they're obviously not about to trade for somebody to replace Yadi
5:02
The biggest "need" feels like another high-leverage relief arm, which is the case for most contenders. They love the ground-ball specialists, so maybe Jorge López from Baltimore?
Preller
5:02
What are the chances of me being able to unload snells contract to get some salary relief. Seems like no one will take Myers or hosmer.
Anthony Franco
5:03
Yeah I can't see either Myers or Hosmer going midseason. Snell and Lamet feel like the guys where you could plausibly dump them for a minimal return to reallocate some salary space
5:04
There'd be takers for Snell at around $23MM guaranteed for the next year and a half. It's just a matter of whether they feel comfortable doing it after last season got torpedoed largely because the rotation unraveled late

Who says no - Tigers trade Soto, Candy, and Kreidler to the Phillies for Bohm and a 20-25 prospect
Anthony Franco
5:06
It'd be interesting if Candelario started hitting but I don't see Philadelphia doing this right now
Brian Cashman
5:07
What's the word on the Judge arbitration?
Anthony Franco
5:07

Is baseball becoming a league of super teams and those that do not have endless payroll have no shot at a championship?
Anthony Franco
5:08
Nah, payroll definitely helps but it's not alone prohibitive for smaller-market clubs. The playoffs are mostly random, so anyone that gets in has a chance
5:09
Almost half the league makes the playoffs, and teams like the Guardians and Rays can consistently stay in that hunt despite the payroll limitations by developing well and being willing to embrace roster churn that sometimes irritates the fanbase
Boney M
5:09
How do you think the extra two days added to the deadline will affect teams thinking? Is it enough to really change anything?
Anthony Franco
5:10
Not really. The league doesn't like doing the deadline on a weekend, so they pushed it back a bit
I don't know why they picked Tuesday, 8/2 instead of Monday, 8/1 but it's mostly immaterial from a team behavior perspective
Twins
5:10
Will the Twins pursue a guy like Martin Perez at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
5:11
I think they'll aim higher in their search for a starter but Pérez could be a fallback, I guess

Any chance we can get Jazz?
Anthony Franco
5:11
Marlins aren't moving him
Cold Room
5:11
Do the Tigers can Avila before or after draft?
Anthony Franco
5:12
Feels like Avila's got another year. The lineup has been terrible and that's largely on the front office, but this was supposed to a pitching-oriented team and all their arms got hurt
5:14
Not saying the fanbase shouldn't be disappointed with how things turned out, and the pitcher injuries don't justify not having a single hitter with at least 100 plate appearances and a wRC+ better than 106
But they were always going to need a bunch of stuff to break right this year to compete, and basically nothing did
Kory
5:15
Do you see the Guardians trading Amed Rosario? Andres Gimenez needs to be playing SS everyday
Anthony Franco
5:15
I'm sure they'll try but I don't see why there'd be much demand. He's making $5MM, not playing well and seems like he's headed towards a non-tender
5:16
I'd probably just kick Giménez over to shortstop and start playing Owen Miller more often at second, but it doesn't seem like they buy that being a workable duo defensively on an everyday basis
Cole
5:17
Hey Anthony, do you know when the next live chat speaker will be like Chipper/Sewald/Caleb Joseph/Straily did in the offseason?
Anthony Franco
5:17
I do not, but I'm guessing the player chats won't be until the offseason

5:17
You think the Angels will make a move at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
5:18
They'll absolutely do something. What they do depends on where they sit in the standings a month from now
