If they're vaguely in contention, they desperately need infield help. The middle infield was bad to begin with, and Rendon's injury creates a hole at third base. Could look for some rotation depth as well given Detmers' struggles
Detmers just got optioned back to Salt Lake by the way
If they fall way out of it, then the impending free agents like Syndergaard and Lorenzen will get moved

In the preseason the Arizona GM said he wouldn't be surprised to see Caroll up this year....now that he's exceeded all expectations....it's gotta happen, right?  Now that Super Two has passed,  what's the next significant date?  Preserving ROY eligibility for next year? So about 120 ABs sound about right?
Anthony Franco
5:21
I don't think service dates have anything to with it at this point, just waiting until they deem him ready
5:22
He's killing Double-A right now, but it's still only 55 games of high minors experience. I do think he'll be up at some point this season but understand their desire to be patient and make sure he's dominating the level before he moves up
5:23
Their Triple-A affiliate in Reno is super hitter-friendly and will probably skew whatever numbers Carroll puts up there, so Double-A feels like the bigger litmus test

Who are your rookies of the year right now?
Anthony Franco
5:24
Jeremy Pena and MacKenzie Gore
Frank Lo
5:25
Do you believe the Yankee starting pitching is for real, or should they actively be looking for starters?
Anthony Franco
5:26
Both can be true. It's a top five rotation -- not everyone has a 3.27 ERA or lower good, but very good -- and they can't count on having the same five guys healthy all year
5:27
I think they'll add a swingman/depth option to guard against injury but they don't have to be as motivated as others to go get Frankie Montas
Harry Dipotato
5:27
Who’s the AL all star starting first baseman? France? Arraez? Guerrero?
Anthony Franco
5:28
I'd go France personally. The early vote totals are out though and it seems like it's going to be Vlad
Shawn
5:29
Why do you say “one of Castillo or Mahle will be traded.” Both need to be traded, it’s not like the Reds are trying to win. They are looking toward 2024. Both will be free agents by then.
Anthony Franco
5:29
Yeah I get the argument for moving both but I think the Reds will view it as too much of a teardown
Sean Newcomb
5:30
What is the deal with Sean Newcomb? Just three years ago he had a 3.16 ERA in now is being DFA’d by another team. Do you see a contending team taking a flyer on him as a rehabilitation project? A team like the Astros seems like a good fit. They are in need of a left-handed relief pitcher and have refurbished a number of relief pictures in the past.
Anthony Franco
5:30
He already cleared waivers. Just can't throw strikes consistently enough

Hays and Santander are less than a year a part. Both seeing a lot of "the show" action since 2017. Could Hays be just as easily considered tradable?
Anthony Franco
5:32
Hays feels like more of a long-term core piece to me. Controllable for an extra season and just a better player
90 Reds
5:32
The Reds front office has been ridiculed this past off-season (rightfully so), but they have done well with some of their minor league signings with Brandon Drury and Albert Almora Jr.
Anthony Franco
5:33
Yeah every front office has some hits and misses
Spencer O
5:33
Alek Thomas, Corbin Carroll or Daulton Varsho has the brightest future ahead of him?
Anthony Franco
5:33
Carroll probably but they should all be good

You said Merrifield won't get traded but the Royals beat reporters (Worthy, Lewis, Rogers) have all mentioned that it is more likely to happen this year than prior seasons. There seems to be a slow shift in the organization since JJ moved to GM and DM moved to president of ops.
Anthony Franco
5:35
He's not playing well right now. Maybe they'd have been more open if he were producing at his typical level, but it'd be a real sell low to trade him at a time when he's hitting .231/.274/.318

Without cheating or thinking about it too much, name the first MLB player from 2006 that comes to mind.
Anthony Franco
5:36
Jack Cust, for some reason
He only played in four games in 2006 apparently

Are you doing a chat and writing a Detmers article at the same time.
Anthony Franco
5:37
Ha no, wish I could multi-task like that
I'll get to Detmers after, but I have to keep a mental catalogue of the news that comes up while the chat's going
Steve Adams said to ask you this last chat!!
5:38
What kind of return should the Rockies get for Kuhl? What kind of contract should Kuhl get next season? Steve said to ask you because you were higher on Kuhl than he is.
Anthony Franco
5:39
Haha I saw that and was wondering if anyone would follow up
5:40
I'd say I'm higher on Kuhl as a fit for Colorado than I am in aggregate really. I just think the sinker-slider repertoire is a good fit for that ballpark and would be on-board if they signed him to like a two-year, $12MM extension
5:41
There'd be trade interest but he's kind of in the Quintana/Zach Davies boring back-end starter bucket. Would get them a couple lottery ticket types probably

Vladito has a .301 xBA and .566 xSLG. Look at his Statcast page. Pure red. He's been great and very unlucky this year.
Anthony Franco
5:41
I'm not down on Vlad Jr. or anything. He's incredible

You mentioned MacKenzie Gore as the front runner for the NL Rookie-of-the-Year.  What would Michael Harris have to do to overtake him, in your opinion?  Harris is hitting for average, hitting for power, and excelling at a key defensive position.
Anthony Franco
5:43
Yeah it's just a volume thing right now. Harris would win if he keeps playing anywhere near this level all season, just can't put him over Gore after three weeks
