What do u think the marlins would do at deadline!?
Anthony Franco
4:11
They're in that weird middle ground area with the Angels, Mariners, Rangers, etc. Could use center field and bullpen help but have to start playing better to make that a realistic consideration
4:12
Craig Mish just reported that Jazz Chisholm is likely headed to the IL with back discomfort, which obviously makes that harder
If they fall out, guys like Garrett Cooper and Anthony Bass could move. Maybe they'll welcome a change of scenery for Elieser Hernández too
Cubs
4:13
What could we hope to get from the White Sox for Madrigal?
Anthony Franco
4:13
A solid everyday second baseman with elite contact skills
Sal
4:14
Do the Angels need a shake-up? Obviously something just isn't working. A team with that much upper-tier talent, capable of spending at high levels -- although some signings have surely been questionable -- shouldn't be this unsuccessful for this long.
Anthony Franco
4:15
They've changed front office and managerial regimes recently, so I'd say they already have. I don't think we're at the point where they should start considering trading Trout or Ohtani if that's what you mean

The Cardinals' FA pitcher signings this year have been atrocious, something like a -2.4 WAR combined, and it doesn't seem like a fluke just this year. How can their ability to evaluate outside pitching talent be that bad?
Anthony Franco
4:16
Matz's strikeout and walk numbers were pretty good before he got hurt. He should be better

How many years until we are competitive?
Anthony Franco
4:17
Really depends on ownership. If they're willing to add like $20MM to the payroll next offseason, it's not crazy they could be alright in 2023. There's the makings of a pretty good core there already
4:18
But if next offseason's another where they'll have to try to thread a needle of dealing good players for salary relief and pivoting late to signing Donovan Solano types, then it's worth dealing both Castillo and Mahle now and looking to 2024
Dave Dombrowski

Given the Phillies' poor playoff chances without either Harper or Segura, is it worth risking the fans' anger by putting Aaron Nola on the market? I would be maximizing his value in an up year and only trade him if it made the team clearly better over the next few years. With Abel, Painter, and McGarry in the pipeline our future starting pitching looks good.
Anthony Franco
4:20
I get the logic but they're not doing this. They're three games over .500, have spent a ton of money over the past few years and haven't made the playoffs in a decade. Have to try to go for it again

The Astros rotation will have a logjam in July when Odorizzi and McCullers return.  Do they dangle the odd man out (Urquidy, Odorizzi or Javier) for a CF upgrade?  Or just send them to the bullpen?
Anthony Franco
4:22
Probably just stockpile the depth. The center field market is pretty weak again and it's tough for me to see a fit of another team that's desperate enough for a back-end starter they're going to give up a center fielder who's better than Jake Meyers
Or Chas McCormick, for that matter
Red sox fan

Does Josh Bell to the sox make sense
Anthony Franco
4:23
Sure. He makes sense for like eight teams, Boston among them
Free Puig
4:24
Are the Dodgers going to wait to get healthy? Or will they be looking for pieces? Seems that the current landscape of the NL West allows for them to sit back, hold onto prospects, and wait it out.
Anthony Franco
4:25
Eh I think the Padres in particularly will push them enough they're motivated to add to try to secure the division and the first-round bye
Buehler's injury increases the urgency to add to the rotation, and they went and got Scherzer and Trea Turner last year despite not really having a "need" at either position. They'll be active again

4:26
In the coverage of Sal Perez's injury, I saw that he has seven All-Star selections and 16.5 WAR. Is he this era's Steve Garvey, a guy always in the Midsummer Classic but with no chance of the HOF?
Anthony Franco
4:27
I don't think he'll get into the Hall of Fame (or come all that close really), but FanGraphs' WAR total on Pérez hammers him really hard for poor pitch framing metrics and probably underrates how often he just posted everyday
Sad Reds Fan
4:27
What kind of return "should" the Reds be aiming for in a Luis Castillo trade?  Is two top 100 prospects a possibilty similar to the Berrios trade?
Anthony Franco
4:29
I think the Berríos trade is a good barometer for both Montas/Castillo. The Top 100 distinction is sort of arbitrary and Martin and Woods-Richardson were both probably more divisive than the typical "top" prospect, but a three or four player with two guys who feature prominently on public lists feels right
Eddie Murray
4:30
The Orioles are not the worst team in baseball anymore, they’re only a handful of games under .500! What’s the plan now?
Anthony Franco
4:30
Yeah this winter's probably the time to get more aggressive. Need to start adding legitimate pitching help, at least
4:31
They'll still listen on Mancini and some of the complementary players like Santander or the relievers (Jorge López in particular), but there's finally a light at the end of the tunnel and I'd be reluctant to move someone from the Mullins or Austin Hays ilk at this point
Anthony
4:32
Patrick Wisdoms first 162 as a Cubs is 40 homers, 92 RBIs, .805 OPS (and 228 strikeouts).. are teams calling for me at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
4:33
There'd be moderate interest and the Cubs should probably move him for what they can get, but it's not going to be huge given all the strikeouts and his age
Dodger Dan
4:34
I never thought I'd consider Muncy, Turner, and Bellinger holes in the lineup. Should I be optimistic they'll bounce back at some point?
Anthony Franco
4:35
Still most optimistic on Muncy as he gets a little further away from the elbow injury, although maybe that's more likely to be a 2023 bounceback. Turner and Bellinger are probably slightly below-average hitters at this point
Tony Mendez
4:36
What do you think the Rays need to compete a Wild Card Spot?
Anthony Franco
4:36
They're a really good fit for Contreras if there's payroll space. Could use another corner outfield bat to replace Margot as well
Cashman
4:37
What is taking me so long to rid the team of Gallo?  Please say it happens soon!
Anthony Franco
4:39
I understand the sentiment here but I think they're right to ride it out. You're not going to get much in return for Gallo now, and the alternative is to play Miguel Andujar or Giancarlo Stanton in the field regularly
4:40
He's been a massive disappointment, no question, but he's still too talented to just completely move on from
Theo's remains
4:40
Guardians, Rays, Mets, Astros, or the field. Where does Contreras end up?
