Can only run out the guys you have. Hoerner, Morel, Madrigal (once healthy) will keep playing everyday for sure, but they don't have much elite talent in the upper minors right now
8:17
Brennen Davis would've probably been up already had he not gotten hurt
Oh sorry, this was the Cubs btw
Bucco71
8:18
Brighter future over next 5 years:  Cubs, Pirates, Reds?
Anthony Franco
8:19
Pittsburgh has the most talent, I think, but they also have the tightest spending constraints. I guess I'd go them though, since the Reds have spun their wheels a bit and the Cubs are still a ways away

Unpopular opinion: Padres missed their chance to sign Musgrove to a reasonable contract this off-season (or before) and it would be a bad idea for them to overpay now. This is probably his peak value - worst time to sign him. Let him walk with a fond farewell and focus elsewhere. What do you think?
Anthony Franco
8:19
I get where you're coming from but they're going to have to replace a good chunk of the rotation next season and Musgrove might be the best starter on the market
8:21
He seems to love it there and while you're right that it'll be top-of-the-market money now, I think that's fine for a San Diego team that spends in the upper third of the league now and only has Gore as a locked-in rotation building block after 2023
Tyler
8:21
do you see the rangers doing anything?
Anthony Franco
8:22
Have to pick a course of action one way or another on Martín Pérez. Trade him or try to work out an extension, but no reason to just slow play it and let him walk
8:23
Beyond that, I'm sure they'll look for ways to add players with some control beyond this season. They've been pretty open about viewing 2023 as the start of their contention window, which is reasonable. Going to have to add some rotation help before next Opening Day, and nothing stops them from at least poking around that market over the next couple weeks
Would I pick them as the favorite for a guy like Castillo or Montas? No, not when other teams are playing for the postseason this year as well. But I think they'll at least lurk on the periphery of those markets and look into possible buy-low candidates with some remaining control

Your best guess on what I accompish before the deadline is?
Anthony Franco
8:24
(Mets)
8:25
Definitely going to add a reliever, feels like they're pretty set on getting a bat too. Doubt it's anyone who requires dealing from the top of the system, but something like Nelson Cruz and Andrew Chafin feels doable
Astros
8:25
What is it everyone sees in Drew Gilbert? Am I missing it?
Anthony Franco
8:26
I loved Gilbert. He was probably my favorite college baseball player these past two years. Approach is a little concerning but he's a true center fielder with some power and bat-to-ball skills. I'm in

What do you think the rays do with glasnow? Is he a piece that might interest the nats for Soto?
Anthony Franco
8:28
Thought they'd deal him over the winter. Now that they've held him this long, I doubt it happens
8:29
Wouldn't be a piece for Soto. Nationals are going to want guys under long-term control
Rare and exceptional

What proportion of questions you receive do you think you read soup to nuts?
Anthony Franco
8:29
Less than half
Red sox fanatic
8:29
Have you heard anything on a possible Rafael Devers extension or even trade? Thanks!
Anthony Franco
8:30
Certainly not getting traded this summer. The extension latest was that they offered him in the realm of Olson money this spring and his camp didn't think it was close
8:31
Probably talk again next winter but simplest scenario is that he just plays out the arb years and hits free agency after 2023
The Gev
8:31
What move(s) do the Phils make prior to the deadline?
Anthony Franco
8:32
Need bullpen help for like the tenth consecutive year. I'm sure they'll look into center field again and maybe land somebody (Laureano and Taylor feel like the main candidates) but it's generally pretty thin after that
Mo
8:33
Does Mo get caught up in the Soto talk and loose sight of the need for pitching.
Anthony Franco
8:33
(Cardinals)
8:34
They can monitor the market on Soto without affecting their pursuit of Brad Keller or whoever. I expect they'll get a starter but it'll be a back-end type like that
Chris
8:35
Is Gallo a pure salary dump at this point? Like would Yanks just give him up for nothing to be rid of his salary obligations?
Anthony Franco
8:36
Depends on whether they succeed in getting another outfielder first. If they get even a David Peralta type that would mostly relegate Gallo to the bench, then yeah, I think they'd move him to save a couple million down the stretch
Oh No...
8:36
What are the Tigers gonna do...Sell I know but going forward..?
Anthony Franco
8:37
Move a couple of the short-term relievers but that's probably about it. They'll want to make another run next year
8:38
Second half of the season will have an effect on who they target obviously. Will be easier to feel ok about the lineup if guys like Torkelson and Baddoo finish the year strong and look like viable regulars. Candelario's more established but they may have to look elsewhere there if he's awful for another two months
8:39
As far as target areas, they'll probably want another short-term catcher (hopefully with more success than Barnhart) as a bridge to Dingler. Second base upgrade over Schoop feels like a priority, could use a back-end starter with Mize likely to miss a good chunk of the season, particularly if the E-Rod situation hasn't sorted itself out by then

What access to information do you have that is not available to the general public?  It seems all you do is report what is mentioned elsewhere.  Why should we value your opinion over anyone else?
Anthony Franco
8:41
I have to run but I'll close on this because I think it's a fair question
8:43
As far as information goes, almost all of what I'm going off of is stuff that's been publicly reported, yeah. I'm not a reporter. I know a few people with teams but we're not kicking around stuff about their deadline plans all the time
8:45
So as far as "why should anyone value my opinion," the best answer I have is that my job entails devoting a lot of time (more than most others have to devote to it) to taking an overhead view of this stuff -- both keeping tabs on what executives are saying and trying to determine as best we can what teams are likely to prioritize based on payroll outlook, what kind of production they're getting, etc.
