Anthony Franco

I think I'd take Burnes over any other pitcher
John
4:48
Orioles stay put? Buy? Sell? Both?
Anthony Franco
4:49
Depends on how they play the next few days, but if they're still above .500 and within three games of a playoff spot, I think they basically hold everybody
Farhandrew Zaidman
4:49
On the one hand, the Dodgers would love to improve on Trayce Thompson with someone like Happ or even Drury (moving Lux or Taylor to the OF full time). But on the other hand, Trayce has a 160 wRC+ since the trade, and I imagine the Dodgers are targeting Soto and/or Castillo. What's the move here?
Anthony Franco
4:51
It's the Dodgers so I won't count them out on any star hitter, but pitching feels like the bigger priority there. Going to need a righty reliever -- one of the Cubs or Tigers guys makes sense -- and I'd probably have them as the top landing spot for Castillo
Reds guy
4:51
Are all these teams that are putting their cost controlled starters on the market hurting the return for Castillo and Mahle?
Anthony Franco
4:51
Nah most of those guys (Skubal, López, Urquidy, Plesac, etc.) aren't going to actually move. I'd be surprised if more than one of them does, still plenty of demand to go around
Lumper or splitter
4:52
If you're a selling GM, are you packaging assets for a bigger prospect (55 + FV type) or getting as many pieces as possible?
Anthony Franco
4:54
Obviously it's dependent on the players involved but as a general idea, I'd skew more towards diversifying risk and acquiring solid prospects in bulk that trying to package players together for one guy
Rob Peter, pay Paul
4:54
If you're the Cubs front office, aren't you willing to eat salary this year to maximize return from potential small market suitors?
Anthony Franco
4:55
That's really an ownership question than a front office one. I'm sure the baseball ops people would always prefer to do this kind of thing, but they're not the ones who have to pay players to suit up for somebody else
4:56
I'm always in support of selling teams doing this, but it's a sticking point for a lot of ownership groups
I will say, in Ricketts' case, the Cubs did this last year with Rizzo and it worked out very well. So I'm not ruling it out as much as saying it's probably not Hoyer's call
Dave W.
4:57
I am a die hard white sox fan. Please tell me were getting a lefty bat?
Anthony Franco
4:58
GM Rick Hahn has said a couple times he considers left-handed relief the top priority there. I think they'll look into second base or the corner outfield as well but expect it to be pretty quiet given their franchise-record payroll and lack of farm depth
Sox fans probably wouldn't if they came away with Donovan Solano and Steven Okert, but that's the sort of thing I'm expecting
Michael
4:58
What's a reasonable expectation for a Josh Bell return? Is Hunter Brown too rich? Ethan Small from Milwaukee?
Anthony Franco
4:58
I'd aim lower
Hoerner is a good at baseball
4:59
Nico Hoerner is having a stellar year at SS, any chance the Cubs sit out on the high end SS market and go find power elsewhere and focus on SP?
Anthony Franco
5:00
This is basically what they did last winter, so there's obviously a chance. Hoerner would be just fine as a third baseman or second baseman if they went and signed Correa, though, so they don't have to do that again
Leslie Knope
5:01
How do the Tigers get better next year?
Anthony Franco
5:02
Some of it will just have to be internal improvements: a full year from Greene, Torkelson/Baddoo taking steps forward. But they also are going to need a catcher this winter, probably have to backfill some of the bullpen after trading away some veterans, and maybe a second base upgrade on Schoop
Greg
5:02
I have a strange feeling that Ben Cherington will be buying for 2023 and selling at the deadline. Can you see this happening?
Anthony Franco
5:02
(Pirates)
5:04
Feels too early for this sort of thing in their case. I think it'll be more moderate selling (Gamel/Quintana) while holding basically all the long-term pieces. Don't think they've reached the stage where they should jump in on controllable rotation help yet. 2024 feels like a better target date
Astros fan
5:04
Does Jake Odorizzi have any trade value? With Houston’s depth, he is who most fans would like to see go.
Anthony Franco
5:05
Probably not enough for them to thin the rotation out. It seems like listening on Urquidy is about expanding their ways to potentially bring in immediate offensive help. Odorizzi isn't going to do that for you
merlin11
5:05
You mention Urquidy as the young Astros starter assumed available but what about Luis Garcia? What value does he have right now?
Anthony Franco
5:05
A ton but I can't see them doing this
mfg
5:06
Reds better off trading for an MLB ready catcher so they can move Stephenson to first base/DH?
Anthony Franco
5:07
Nah I've seen this floated after Stephenson got hurt again but it's too early. If it were some kind of chronic issue, I'd get it. But he's just had terrible luck -- collision, couple foul tips. Leave him back there, that stuff evens out
Crazy Crab
5:08
Giants sellers? And who do you think comes and goes from the team?
Anthony Franco
5:09
Man, I've been a hard no on this question all year but I'm about 50/50 now. They've been brutal out of the Break but are still only 2.5 back and have a veteran core that was awesome last season
5:10
Sort of like the Red Sox where I really think so much depends on what happens these next five days. I'd be surprised if Zaidi and his staff have even committed one way or the other yet
If they did sell, Rodón, Joc, Flores would all probably go
JC
5:10
Will the Rays look to add pieces at the deadline or stand still and look forward to next year?
Anthony Franco
5:12
Have to be aggressive, particularly in getting another bat. They're probably a playoff team, going to get better down the stretch as they get healthier. Really need outfield help though. Can't get relying on Josh Lowe, Luke Raley and Brett Phillips
Double Bogey
5:13
Being content with a compensatory pick for Bogaerts is a silly way to think about running your franchise. It's like knowing you're gonna get dumped and still taking them out on dates. Why not just trade him?
Anthony Franco
5:14
If they had no chance of making the playoffs, it's a different story. They're not buried for 2022 at this point
Dayne
5:14
What exactly is the difference between a GM and a president of baseball operations. Who is doing the transactions?
