Would it benefit the Rangers to trade for Gallo now, so they have 1/2 a season to see if coming “home” would bring him back to form, or if he’s truly broken? Seems like he’s a huge buy low opportunity for someone if it’s just NY that he can’t handle.

Swinging big, basically. The only real "need" is at second base, so I'm sure they'll look into the Merrifield/Drury types there. But the real freedom is in the prospect depth and payroll space to make a legitimate push for any star talent who comes available

They'll be in on Soto, Montas, Castillo, maybe López or Skubal. Doesn't mean they necessarily land any of them, but the opportunity is there for them to go for that kind of player

They were probably in it before since they've poked around on the possibility for star center fielders in the past, but I think Brantley's health status increases the likelihood of them adding a bat, yeah

I'd be shocked if Benintendi doesn't go at least. Guys like Merrifield, Barlow, Taylor, Keller who are controllable for another season or more could stick around, sure

Don't actually think it'll have much effect this year. The gap between the second and third Wild Card teams in each league is small (they're tied right now in the NL)

So teams that think they're in it with three teams in each league would've probably felt similarly (albeit a little less so since there would've been fewer spots to go around) in a 10-team playoff

Gotten a few questions about Smyly, who I think is generally fine. He'll get traded and probably be a modest back-end rotation upgrade for somebody, sort of in the Quintana range

It's not going to take anyone off the block but it'll give some of the teams marketing high-end rentals at least a bit more leverage
Not going to matter in the case of someone like Contreras, whose asking price was always going to be higher than the QO. But for a player like Josh Bell or J.D. Martinez, it probably helps the Nats/Red Sox marginally
