What are the chances a guy like Varsho is moved? 3+ years of control but AZ not likely to compete this year, whi
Anthony Franco
5:51
Can't see it. They're not really rebuilding, and moving a guy like that feels pretty counterintuitive
5:53
The point of a rebuild is to get good, controllable players like Varsho. Obviously they've got an uphill path back to contention in that division but they've started to work in a pretty promising position player at the major league level. I expect they'll keep those guys around and hope to compete in 2023-24

Jays are massively under performing based on expectations. Lack of starting pitching depth exposed, bullpen always a weak spot, bats not consistent enough. Realistically, what can they fix?
Anthony Franco
5:54
Adding another bat (ideally a left-hander) to the outfield feels like a goal. Shouldn't be too hard to do. Even if you miss on Benintendi, the David Peralta or Ben Games types can fit there
And they need another starter so they can move Kikuchi to the bullpen. That isn't working, but he could probably be ok as a situational reliever you try to shelter from good right-handed hitters

Will Brad Keller and Scott Barlow be Royals after the deadline?
Anthony Franco
5:55
I lean yes on Keller, no on Barlow
David Robertson
5:55
Best guess where I am come August 2nd?
Anthony Franco
5:56
Man, I'd probably give you a different answer to this every week. Ten teams could use Robertson
I'll say Red Sox for now, I guess
Fred
5:56
Do you see really any top-100 prospects getting moved at the deadline? Feels like none of the available players this year are worth the cost.
Anthony Franco
5:57
Yeah, some of the controllable guys will bring back top prospects. Castillo, Montas, Happ all would
So would Bryan Reynolds and Cedric Mullins/Austin Hays, although those guys feel like longshots to actually move

When does Preller stop snoozing and bring up Ruiz to try to get some (ANY) production from his outfield? Or is Ruiz languishing in the minors because he’s trade bait
Anthony Franco
5:58
I doubt they're keeping him down as trade bait. Could call him up and still trade him in three weeks if you find somebody more proven
5:59
I don't really get why he's not gotten a call honestly. He's fallen pretty far in prospect circles and certainly wouldn't be a slam-dunk solution out of the gate, but he's earned a shot in my view
6:00
(Sorry, in case this isn't clear for non-Padres fans)
That's Esteury Ruiz in the San Diego system

Any chance the Tigers walk the line and buy AND sell? It’s been a rough year with injuries but we’re supposed to be looking to contend sooner rather than later.
Anthony Franco
6:01
I'm sure they'll look into adding controllable talent. There are a few teams in that bucket (Texas, Angels, Arizona, maybe Kansas City) who could go that route while also dealing short-term assets
6:03
Detroit's definitely going to move a veteran reliever or two. Fulmer's gone and Chafin probably goes as well. Otherwise, I'm guessing it'll be pretty quiet since basically everyone else has underperformed this year, but they could at least look around for a controllable bat
R5crunch
6:03
do teams need to start clearing out their r5 eligible players now to avoid losing them for pennies in December or is there plenty of time for these trades yet
Anthony Franco
6:04
Plenty of time. It's a factor at the deadline for teams like Tampa Bay and Cleveland that always have that kind of depth, but there's a couple weeks between the start of the offseason and protection day to make those moves as well

with SS Gunner Henderson ranked as the 5th best prospect do you still think we should go after Correa or a 2/3B?
Anthony Franco
6:05
Sure, can always just move Henderson to third base
I don't think the Orioles actually will pursue Correa or any of the other big free agent shortstops, but there's a pretty good case for them to do so
Mike Barnes
6:05
What does a Joe Musgrove extension look like?
Anthony Franco
6:06
I'd set the O/U at like 6/135
6:07
He's probably the top free agent starter next year. I think he's a better bet than either Ray (who had a great 2021 but a career of control volatility) and Gausman (who's super splitter-dependent). Both those guys landed 5/110-115 last year
Matthew
6:08
What do you see the Phillies doing?  I think they need to upgrade at CF and get rid of Mickey Moniak.
Anthony Franco
6:08
Yeah I'm sure they'll try again in center field. It's a huge problem. The trade market there is bad but they can try to pry away Ramón Laureano or add a Michael Taylor type
6:09
They'll be in on bullpen help for the 148th consecutive season too
Howard Terminal
6:09
Do you see the A's moving anyone besides Montas at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
6:10
I don't, aside from maybe a minor role player like Sam Moll
But I'm probably in the minority there. I believe Steve's of the opinion they'll deal Murphy and maybe Laureano as well
Pace of Play
6:11
Do you think pace of play would benefit from limiting pickoff attempts. Say two per at bat?
Anthony Franco
6:11
I doubt it really matters in the grand scheme of things but I like the idea well enough
6:12
Most people like watching stolen bases, and a pickoff limit makes those more viable
Steven

Since CF is not a must add for Astros and fan favorite vets at 1B and C, who is a logical target for the Astros at the deadline?
