I'd probably be open to upgrading over Gurriel at first base but agree they probably won't given what he's meant to the organization for a long time
Left-handed relief help is the obvious one at that point. Can also add a better #2 catcher than Castro even if they don't want to displace Maldonado
CBA
6:13
Was there any talk of trading draft picks?
Anthony Franco
6:14
Not that I'm aware of. I don't think anyone's really opposed to it, per se, but it's not in the strong financial interest of the league or MLBPA to advocate for it either
Oh face
6:14
Do the Padres move a SP or hold all 7 legit starters?
Anthony Franco
6:15
I think they'll deal one, probably Snell
Big Fish
6:16
The Marlins are 3 games out of the wild card, are we buyers yet? Who do we get? We already have the NL Cy Young award winner
Anthony Franco
6:17
Yeah they're another team that'll try to pull a center fielder from what little is out there. Craig Mish and Barry Jackson wrote recently they want to add relief help too, which makes sense
They're quietly a pretty decent team though, and the recent run of play has pulled them into position to add help for the stretch run so long as they hang around over the next three weeks
I can't read my name tag...

The most surprisingly successful and the most disappointing teams to date are ... ?
Anthony Franco
6:19
Mets and White Sox, respectively

MLBTR is looking for a part-time weekend stringer. Who is leaving or has the site gotten to the point where another writer is needed? I'm intrigued.
Anthony Franco
6:20
No one's leaving, adding Darragh to weekday coverage to buy more time for long-form analysis type stuff

In what order would you rank Atlanta's needs at the trade deadline. An additional starting pitcher, 2nd base, bullpen or other?
Anthony Franco
6:22
2nd base, another corner outfield/DH type to reduce the need to count on guys like Ozuna, Rosario and Duvall, then starting pitching help

I don't see Aaron Judge or Carlos Correa or any other top SS'S signing with the Cubs this off season.  As Chicago media and Cub bloggers tend to think will happen. They don't want to sign with the rebuilding club
Anthony Franco
6:23
In general, most guys will go where the top offer is. That's not universal, of course, and maybe the two players you mentioned will prioritize different things. But they can add impact talent this offseason if they're willing to spend
6:24
I also think it's a totally fair argument to say it's too early for them to do so. Correa's young enough I'd be intrigued but it's pretty hard to see the Cubs as a 2023 contender, in my view. For a guy like Judge, who's heading into his age-31 season, that timeline isn't great

If SD is able to trade Snell, who should they acquire? Bell? Happ? Reynolds?
Anthony Franco
6:25
I think Happ makes a ton of sense if they can find a taker for Snell
6:26
Not Happ for Snell, of course. The Cubs wouldn't have any interest in that. But if they can shed some of the Snell money to buy some CBT breathing room, pivoting back to deal young talent for Happ is a pretty clean payroll/roster fit

If the over/under on the number of relievers the Twins add at the deadline is 1.5, would you take the over or the under? They have a big need, but so do all the other buyers.
Anthony Franco
6:26
Over, although I'd take the under if you specified they were high-leverage types
6:27
One late-game guy and a competent but unexciting middle innings add feels like the play there
Franthony Anco
6:28
Who should be traded this deadline, but probably won't be?
Anthony Franco
6:28
C.J. Cron, Zack Grienke
Jon Daniels
6:28
How does Texas' playoff outlook look for 2023 realistically, or will a failed season mean panic mode for us?
Anthony Franco
6:29
So much depends on how they address the pitching staff next winter, right? The position player group is pretty good, particularly if Seager and Semien start to play at the level Texas was already expecting
6:30
Contending in 2023 is perfectly viable, but they're going to have to hit on some rotation adds. Can't keep trotting out Glenn Otto, Taylor Hearn and Spencer Howard

6:31
Do Red Sox nab a first baseman?     Or just keep making it work?  I thought that was supposed to be an easy position to fill with a hitter.
Anthony Franco
6:31
Yeah I like them as a fit for either Bell or Mancini
Brent
6:32
Do you see the Angels selling off much at the tradedeadline?
Anthony Franco
6:33
Just the rental starters, basically. They've fallen far enough out they're probably going to have to accept it's not happening this year but I doubt they'll move anyone controllable beyond this season

6:33
Should (not will) the Sox be sellers at the trade deadline? If not, why (other than there are still plenty of games to go)?
Anthony Franco
6:34
I don't think so. There are plenty of games to go. For as poorly as they've played, they're only four out in the Wild Card and 5.5 back in the division
6:35
It's a talented, albeit top-heavy, roster. This core won 93 games last season, the division has a couple good teams but nobody great. I'd mostly let it play out and hope guys like Moncada and Grandal start playing better
Cody
6:36
Do you think Pablo Lopez could be moved before the deadline? He'd be a great fit for St. Louis!
Anthony Franco
6:37
Nah, Miami's right in the thick of things. Doubt they'd have moved López anyways but they're definitely not going to now
Todd
6:37
Mets lead in the NL East has been slowly slipping away. Where do you see them finishing? Do they make the postseason?
Anthony Franco
6:38
I still like them to hold on and win it
