Despite expressing confidence in Kikuchi, should I pull him from the rotation?
Anthony Franco
7:59
Got a few questions about the Jays deadline I'll generally answer here too. I thought not adding a bat wasn't a huge deal, but I'm surprised they didn't address the rotation so they could bump Kikuchi to the bullpen
8:00
He's not a good starting pitcher. We have four years of evidence for that at this point. I think there's a chance he could be alright in a situational role, but he can't get right-handed batters out
Cleveland
8:00
Why do u seem to be down on rosario hes been carrying them
Anthony Franco
8:01
He's just been inconsistent throughout his career. He's on a heater right now and I don't think they necessarily need a shortstop, but his long-term track record is enough of a roller-coaster he wouldn't stop me from looking

Feel like I remember seeing a post about MLBTR hiring a new writer, what ever ended up happening with that?
Anthony Franco
8:02
Still pending. We're in the second round of the process
Hindsight is 20/20

On October 5 what team is going to say, “boy, we messed that up.”    I pick the Brewers.
Anthony Franco
8:03
The deadline? I was surprised the Cubs didn't do more than tear down the bullpen
Felt like Happ and Contreras should've moved. Obviously I don't know what was on the table so I can't definitively say they messed up, but I thought they were in better position on August 1 than I do now
White Sox
8:04
While they are close to the Twins and Guardians, they are light years from the Astros, Yankees and probably even the Blue Jays and Mariners.  Pitchers won’t be there forever….do they look drastically different next year?
Anthony Franco
8:05
Nah, I think they'll keep most of this core around for a while. The team's too good to blow up but they don't have much farm talent and already had a franchise-record payroll this year, so I don't see a path to being super aggressive this offseason either
8:06
Try to re-sign Abreu, upgrade at second base and add to the back of the rotation, and run it back. They're not as deep as the best teams in the league, I agree, but I think there's a core here that could compete for the ALC for a few years in a row

What does this offseason look like for us?
Anthony Franco
8:08
Elias has hinted at being a little more aggressive. Feels like they have to hit the pitching market harder than they have, maybe by checking in on a Pablo López or Zach Plesac controllable trade target
8:09
The outfield's pretty good, catcher's obviously set. The current infield is rough but they're going to lean on the influx of incoming talent from the system there I think. Rotation feels like the priority. Even with Rodríguez and Hall coming, could use two more arms there

Who wins AL Central?
Anthony Franco
8:09
I'll stick with the Twins but don't feel good about it
Mariners
8:10
Who do we go after this offseason? Is Kyle Lewis a free agent now, or just in minors?
Anthony Franco
8:10
Just in the minors, he'll be back
8:12
Darragh opined yesterday they should be involved on the free agent shortstops this offseason, with a willingness to kick Crawford over to second base in the right situation. I think that's appropriate. Could use a veteran backup catcher and an outfielder if Haniger walks to guard against future injuries for Lewis

Have fun in Cincy! I hear it’s a beautiful city. Are you catching a Reds game?!
Anthony Franco
8:13
Not sure about that yet. Flying in Wednesday morning. They play Philly at like 12:35 and then are gone for the next week, so we're kind of playing that by ear depending on when we land
blackmana
8:13
What kind of contract would you expect Brandon Nimmo to get this offseason?
Anthony Franco
8:14
He's been pretty divisive in our deliberations over the past few months. I like him around 5/100. Darragh seems to be generally around where I'm at, thinks he could even get six years. Steve and Tim have him more around 4/80
8:15
Between his age, consistent offensive production and the lack of other good free agent center fielders out there, we all think he'll do pretty well though
Bernie Franks
8:16
We're u surprised about the Jason Heyward statement? Done for the year will be DFA end of season
Anthony Franco
8:16
Surprised they announced it two months in advance, not surprised it's happening
Jeff
8:16
If Yankees slide continues. Do you think they fire Boone?
Anthony Franco
8:17
No. They just signed him to a three-year deal and they're one of the two best teams in the AL

If the Padres miss the playoffs, is preller gone?
Anthony Franco
8:18
Can't see this happening either. 18 months removed from a long-term extension/promotion. His trades have built a good roster and revitalized the fanbase. He's fine for now
If they miss the playoffs both this year and next, then I think it's a real question
Ryan
8:18
Do you buy the narrative that accepting subpar returns for pending free agents at the deadline when you are out of contention will negatively affect what teams offer you for your future trade chips?
Anthony Franco
8:19
No. Everyone understands those teams don't have great leverage. The demand comes from pitting teams against one another, not threatening to just keep the player
Athletics
8:19
All the conversation was around trading Montas but why didn’t we trade Cole Irvin too? Having a monster season but 29 years old next year so probably doesn’t fit our rebuilding timeline
Anthony Franco
8:20
He's cheap, and those pitch-to-contact control artists are better fits in Oakland than in a lot of other ballparks
8:21
That's not to discount Irvin. I think he's good, but he's also better for the A's than he is for basically any other team with how big the Coliseum is
Chris
8:21
Are the Mets due for a regression in 2023 with deGrom, Diaz, and Nimmo all free agents?
Anthony Franco
8:21
They'll bring back at least one of those guys and probably replace the others. They should be fine
