Rule 5 question
6:24
Will everybody who was supposed to be eligible for the rule 5 draft this past year just be added to the list of this years players? That would make for a large class
Anthony Franco
6:25
I believe that's the plan, yeah. A good portion of last year's guys will just be eligible for minor league free agency before the Rule 5 hits though

Dombrowski has offered he is not hesitant to move players through the farm if they are ready, regardless of age....? What do you think the chances are of Painter, Abel and McGarry being solid/any contributors in 2023....?
Anthony Franco
6:26
I'd be surprised if we see Painter or Abel given their youth. McGarry's more viable if he's throwing strikes in the upper minors next year

Give me a reason to Care?  Sears and Waldichuk looking good so far.  How about moving AJ Puk back into the Rotation next year?  Looks like he finally has stayed healthy for a full season.  Limiting him to 1 Inning per appearance is a waste if we can get 7 Innings out of him instead.
Anthony Franco
6:28
Disagree on Puk. Feels like that might be playing with fire from a health perspective, and I doubt the control is good enough for him to be a #3 type starter anyways
6:29
As far as reasons to care about the A's, it kind of has to be the young guys you mentioned by default. Langeliers being up now is exciting. Murphy's good but seems likely to be traded pretty soon. That's about it. They have a few interesting players, as every team does, but it's a brutal roster overall obviously

Who rounds out CF and LF for the Astros in 2023?
Anthony Franco
6:31
Chas McCormick and someone like Michael A. Taylor? Don't think they'll go huge on the outfield with Pedro Leon coming
Parker G
6:32
Do you think Oneil Cruz can put it all together by the end of the season?
Anthony Franco
6:33
I don't think he's at that point from a plate discipline perspective yet
Going to continue to flash huge upside but I doubt he solves the strikeout woes within a month

Are the Braves smart or are they backing themselves into a corner with all these early long term contracts?
Anthony Franco
6:36
I've thought all the extensions make sense. Harris deal has a chance to be a huge bargain if he's anywhere near this good moving forward. Riley's obviously a heftier investment but a $22MM annual tab for an MVP candidate (which it seems like he just is at this point) is still really strong value

Hey Anthony, what do you think Tatis needs to do over the next two-three years to right the ship and make it so Preller and Co. don’t regret that monster contract they gave him??
Anthony Franco
6:36
Play like he did before this year basically. If he comes back and is awesome again, they'll be happy

Why doesn’t Milwaukee bring up one of the outfielders who are currently performing well at Nashville to see if they could add an offensive spark to a club that is obviously fading?
Anthony Franco
6:39
Yeah I'm with you. I'd call up Frelick at this point

Does Preller's rope get shorter if they fail to make the PS? Thanks for the chat..
Anthony Franco

Get this question a lot, and I can't see him being in jeopardy this season. He's made some huge swings that have led to a ton of excitement within the fanbase and built a good roster, which obviously appeals to ownership. If they miss the playoffs again in 2023, that becomes more interesting

What is the best avenue to field for the Reds this off season
Anthony Franco
6:43
Modest additions with an eye towards 2024. Once Moustakas and Votto come off the books next offseason, it becomes time to push back in. For now, I think they look for stopgap types at third base and in the corner outfield and use 2023 as a transitional season
6:44
Alright I have to run to fill in that Wheeler post
Dombrowski says the Phils hope he only misses two starts by the way
Thanks for all the questions tonight. Apologies as always for the stuff I couldn't get to
I also run chats exclusive to Front Office subscribers every Friday afternoon, so I'll be doing one of those tomorrow

The queues are way smaller so I answer the vast majority of those questions
