Combine that with ownership perhaps not being as open to spending as advertised, and I can see why Anthopoulos played it close to the vest.  As we've seen from his Blue Jays days, however, AA will absolutely make a big trade deadline move if he feels his team can contend

Wil Myers certainly has his flaws, but he’s only 28. Think the Giants could acquire him for Samardzija? Nearly twice the contract, but $ are one thing the Giants have. And the Pads appear to desperate for SP.
Mark P
10:01
That type of deal would need to be followed up by the Padres signing someone like a Dallas Keuchel to make much sense for them.
Terry
10:01
Is Longoria gone or will the Giants keep him?
Mark P
10:01
They'll be keeping him, in large part because Longoria's trade value cratered after his tough 2018 season

The renewal of Blake Snell for so little seems insulting.  Do you think that it has possibly soured the relationship between the two sides?
Mark P
10:04
Probably not to any major extent, though it's hard to know what (if anything) was said behind closed doors
Giants
10:06
Could Yasmany Tomas be a outfield target for the giants?
Mark P
10:07
Surely the Giants can do better than Tomas
Carlos Gonzalez AKA CarGo
10:07
Is there any chance I wind up in Charm City aka Baltimore? I mean San Fran is nice, but the truth is:  “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” Who has time for that?
Mark P
10:09
Always a chance the O's sign a veteran or two, at a low cost.

That quote about SF is very true.  Attending a July night game there years ago, I foolishly wore shorts and a t-shirt since it was 70 degrees during the day.  That dropped to around 45 degrees by the second inning, leaving me a shivering mess

Will we see less and less players reach free agency in the next few years based on how the last couple off-seasons have gone or will that not change?
Mark P
10:11
The absolute top of the market guys (Harper, Machado, etc.) will still test the market.  For slightly lesser guys, however, I wonder if there will indeed be more incentive to take an extension now rather than risk a long wait on the open market

Did Boras' focus on Harper screw over his other clients (Maldonado, Keuchel, Marwin Gonzalez, etc.)?
Mark P
10:12
The Boras Corporation (which is many agents, not only Scott Boras himself) has more than enough resources to handle multiple free agent clients.  I'm pretty sure the Maldonado market and the Harper market didn't have a ton of similarities
record
10:13
does Spring training records reflect on how the regular season goes? It is hard to overlook atlanta and Phillies doing well overall.
Mark P
10:14
Preseason stats in any sport are usually meaningless.

Put it this way --- when the Browns and Lions had their 0-16 seasons in the NFL, they were both 4-0 in the preseason
Analytics Vs
10:14
What is your opinion of analytics vs traditional scouting techniques? thanks.
Mark P
10:15
Like every GM and executive says, you need both.  It's a rote answer but it's true.

10:16
Will Philly be the MLB's first "superteam" like the Warriors in the NBA?
Mark P
10:17
Wait, FIRST superteam?  The Yankees of the 1920's-early 60's would like to have a word.
Paul
10:18
Playoffs?!?! Who you got??
Mark P
10:19
NYY, Cleveland, Houston as division winners.  Red Sox, Twins as the wild cards.

NL is much harder to call, but I'll say Washington, St. Louis, LA win the divisions.  Wild cards are Colorado and Milwaukee.  But, ask me tomorrow and I'll have different answers

Thanks for the chats. Surprised that teams didn't offer more for Harper, and let him go for such a (relatively) low AAV , and no opt-outs?
Mark P
10:22
You're welcome!

I'm surprised more teams weren't in on Harper (at least publicly).  I can see the arguments against giving him a 13-year commitment since that's such an enormous amount of time for any player, let alone one with his injury history.  If Harper was intent on a long deal without opt-outs, however, that put a lot of teams out of the race right from the get-go

Short version: Grade the Yankees' off-season for this wannabe-disgruntled fan.
Mark P
10:24
B+
The Yankees are awesome, they didn't really need to make all that many moves.  They strengthened their rotation and pen, plus LeMahieu is an underrated signing for their needs
Falvine
10:25
Are the Twins the AL version of the braves essentially?
Mark P
10:26
It's not a bad comp.  Except the Braves already got big production from their big outfield prospect (Acuna) and infield prospect (Albies), while the Twins are still waiting on Buxton to really blossom, and for Sano to become more consistent
Kenneth
10:27
What is a greater need for the Dodger's? A front line starter to go with Buehler since there are uncertainties with Kershaw or more bullpen help?
Mark P
10:28
I'd say rotation, but the Dodgers always seem to have a dozen pitching injuries per season and still make the playoffs.
Goose
10:28
Are the Padres and Rockies gearing up for active trading this year?  They seem to have a ton of position player depth but could use some pitching.
Mark P
10:29
Padres definitely need another arm or two.  Colorado's rotation was quietly very good last year...I think they're underrated just by nature of being "the Rockies' rotation."
Billy Eppler (Angels GM)
10:30
Both Skaggs and Heaney have already experienced minor injuries (or soreness/ fatigue) this Spring, though hopefully it’s nothing too serious. Given that they’ve both had TJ surgery, can I really count on them?  Shouldn’t I be giving Keuchel a call right about now?
Mark P
10:31
The Angels are trying to hedge their bets on short-term pitchers (Harvey, Cahill) since they still feel they have good in-house arms if anyone can ever stay healthy.

The problem is...nobody can stay healthy.  Makes it tough for a team to compete.  I mentioned this last week, but the constant injuries might also be a turnoff for some free agent pitchers.  If you're Keuchel, aren't you wondering what the heck is going on in Anaheim that's leading to so many guys on the IL?

10:31
Any chance the Yanks sign Gio? Seems like a nice match with CC and Sev missing the first week or two.
Mark P
10:32
After those first couple of weeks, however, what happens to Gio?  You can see why Gonzalez would want to sign somewhere that offers a clearer path to consistent playing time

Hello Mark. Let’s say the Angels are out of contention by the trade deadline and they decide to trade Mike Trout to prepare for the future. What would the Dodgers have to give up for a year and 2 months of Trout?
Mark P
10:34
I can't imagine the bidding war that would ensue if the Angels actually shopped Trout at the deadline.  Frankly, I'm not sure the Dodgers could ever offer enough.....if there's one team the Angels would never deal Trout to, it's the other LA club
