Seems like the kind of player who will have a lengthy big league career on defense alone.  If he ever starts to hit, watch out.

I’m worried that the astros didn’t male enough moves to help their rotation (lost kuechel and Morton) or their OF, what do you say? With the various big names FA’s shouldn’t they be in win now mode?
Mark P
10:37
Less so with the outfield, since I like the Brantley signing.  But the rotation, you're correct.  That's a significant dropoff after Verlander and Cole.

What was the most shocking or your all time favorite baseball moment? Shocking for me was Clemens throwing the broken bat at piazza
Mark P

Favorite moment: Joe Carter's homer to win the World Series

Shocking moment: this one time during a rainy game in house league, when I was playing left field and being miserable in the wet weather.  The batter hit what I thought was a foul ball, and so I just casually reached my arm up in the air to stretch since there was a break in the action....and then caught the ball.  Turns out it had stayed fair, or curved back into play somehow.

All things considered, probably the best defensive play in baseball history.  Top that, Willie Mays!

I still don't see how Cleveland is going to win the division with that pathetic outfield.

Twins aside, the rest of the AL Central is pretty bad

Do you think the increasing availability of super utility types are hurting interest and contract values for FA's like Marwin, for example? He didn't seem to draw a ton of interest this year, and the Astros got a decent replacement for next to nothing.
Mark P
10:44
This is a solid point.  Teams seem to be trying to build their own super-utility types from within, rather than signing a guy like Marwin (at least at what Marwin's initial asking price was)

Do you see this eventually happening to a 26 or 27 man in the future?
Mark P
10:45
It seems like there's some good momentum building towards a 26-man roster in the near future

Any chance Alonso is the everyday 1B and Smith is the everyday LF for the Mets this year?
Mark P
10:48
Alonso becoming the 1B regular, that's a possibility.  But I highly doubt Smith catches on in left field, he doesn't appear to have the glove for it.  Plus, the Mets have a ton of other outfield guys.

Most offseason grades posts on internet giving the Orioles a low grade. But considering how bad they are and fact they hired what seems to be solid leadership, I’d think they deserve a B grade. Thoughts?
Mark P
10:49
I'd almost give the Orioles' offseason an NA.  They're hard to really evaluate since they're starting at complete rock bottom.  You're right in saying that Elias seems like a strong hire on paper, and he seems to be putting together a good team around him in the front office.  That in itself seems like a win

Lagares, Vargas, and frazier and some cash for Pillar, Smoak, and Travis? Who says no?Also Mets sign Gio or Keuchle after

Jays say no, they don't gain anything from such a trade

Will Josh Hader ever get a shot at the rotation? Could he be the next Randy Johnson?

I’m fearful mookie will regress batting out of the leadoff spot as he has when he’s been moved down in the lineup for short stints? Would you share this concern?
Mark P
10:55
The sample sizes are too small to really judge how Betts fares outside of leadoff.  He has 2165 career PA as the #1 hitter, and his next most PA in any other spot in the batting order is 243 hitting cleanup.

My general answer is, Mookie Betts is a great player, he'll hit whenever you slot him

With a healthy Bryant and Darvish you really think the Cubs wont make the playoffs? That st Louis wins the division? As you stated earlier
Mark P
10:57
As I said, my predictions change on the regular.  STL and Chicago both have excellent teams, but the NL Central is so stacked, it's hard to pick a winner.  Even if Darvish/Bryant are both healthy, who's to say more holes won't develop elsewhere in the Cubs' lineup?

The Twins made nice moves but could've done much more. You think they're waiting for the trade deadline to see where they stand?

Hawaii,Las Vegas Baseball Team?
Mark P

Hawaii no, the distance is likely just too much.  Vegas is a solid maybe, since the Golden Knights and Raiders have already broke the seal on pro sports in that city

Wil Myers for Zack Greinke. Who says no?
Mark P
11:05
Maybe Greinke, since the Padres are one of the teams on his no-trade list
11:07
If Greinke really is such a big detriment to team spending, maybe the D'Backs unload him to any team that will absorb the whole deal.  Then again, in Myers' specific case, the D'Backs only end up saving $20-$25MM in money, and I think Greinke will be better than Myers will in 2019
