It'd be awfully radical for baseball, so I don't see it happening any time soon.
Marc
9:31
Where does Gio wind up?  One year deal, I assume?
Mark P
9:32
I've been thinking about a Gio/Oakland reunion for months, though it probably should have happened by now if the A's were interested, right?
Farhan
9:33
Why isn't Aaron altherr a giant yet?
Mark P
9:33
Because the Giants might not want a guy who's been a negative-fWAR player in two of the last three seasons?
Unfortunately a Mets fan
9:34
The Mets have a starting pitching problem, don’t they?
Mark P
9:35
There are probably 25-26 teams in baseball that wish they had the Mets' "problems" in the rotation
Aaron Judge
9:36
What do you think a contract extension would look like for me when I will be able to get one?
Mark P
9:37
Judge turns 27 in April.  He still has all three arbitration seasons remaining, so he's scheduled to hit free agency after 2022, and 2023 will be his age-31 season.
9:38
So if you're the Yankees, you have to (pardon the pun) judge how much you're willing to pay a 31-year-old power hitter for X number of his free agent years.  Judge certainly looks like an elite bat, and he's a good athlete and good defender who doesn't look like he'll become a 1B/DH anytime soon.
9:40
Remember, the Yankees also don't usually give out extensions (this spring's Hicks/Severino deals notwithstanding).  They're content to wait guys out until closer to the end of their arb years to see what they really have.  So if I'm NYY, I'm happy to just give Judge big year-to-year paydays in arbitration and wait until he's going into that last year of control to see how he's aging and still producing

Mark P

1. Sandlot
2. Field Of Dreams
3. Natural....unpopular opinion: I'm not a big Natural fan.
9:41
Best of these baseball movies?

Would you agree that Brian Cashman had a terrible winter and the yankees dont have the pitching to win
Mark P
9:43
Acquired Paxton, re-signed Happ, perhaps improved on what was already a terrifyingly good bullpen.....seems like they're in pretty good pitching shape to me.

With a surplus of outfielders do the Reds make another trade before opening day? Perhaps by sending down Senzel in order to give more playing time to the other outfielders.
Mark P
9:46
Senzel will spend the first few weeks in the minors to work on his defense (a.k.a. get the Reds an extra year of service time).  I don't think Cincinnati will necessarily make a deal since they have a lot of outfielders, but none are true everyday types except for probably Puig.  Lots of platoon splits and defensive limitations out there.
Ben Davis
9:47
What do you think of the new 26-man rosters?
Mark P
9:47
I like the move.  It's a good win for the MLBPA to get 30 more big league jobs available for its members, and it's a nod to how the sport's strategy is evolving

When will the Phillies let Scott Kingery play one position every day
Mark P
9:49
Kingery hasn't yet shown himself worthy of an everyday role.  Frankly, I wonder if the Phils' desire to move him around the diamond is hampering his development....such a superutility role can't be easy on a young player, even one with Kingery's potential.

Does McGriff or Murphy make the Hall for you? How about Andruw Jones?
Mark P
9:50
McGriff, yes.  Murphy and Jones, no.

Jones should be getting more attention than he's yet received from HOF voters, however.  It baffles me how some voters can mark down Omar Vizquel based on defense and then ignore Jones.

Do you honestly expect this demographic to know what Cher’s voice is like?
Mark P
9:52
Surely everyone in this chat has seen Moonstruck, right?  Right?!  Am I so out of touch?!
Red Sox Fan
9:52
Does the bullpen end up preventing the Red Sox from even making the postseason this year?
Mark P
9:53
I would be very surprised if Boston didn't reach the playoffs, and I think their bullpen problems are a bit overstated.  Nothing is preventing the Sox from trading for a closer in June or July, remember, if the ninth inning actually does become an issue
White Sox Fan
9:54
Thoughts on our off-season?
Mark P
9:56
I'm still amazed they thought they didn't need to pay Machado at least $300MM.  If you're fervently chasing a big free agent like that, you can't try to get cute with half-measures

Who are you picking to win it all in your bracket?
Mark P
9:57
My alma mater, the University Of Western Ontario, was snubbed AGAIN.  It's all meaningless.

Are we being careful with Kersh or is something really wrong?
Mark P
10:00
I'm not sure if anything is "really" wrong, if you define that as something long-term or season-ending.  It could just be that LAD has to acknowledge that Kershaw isn't a full-season, 200+ innings type of pitcher any more.  There's logic in resting him now to make sure he's ready to go for October

If the rays are out of contention by mid season, how blown away would they have to be with an offer to move snell? And what would that offer potentially look like?
Mark P
10:01
1. Very blown away
2. More than the White Sox got for Chris Sale

What would happen to a LOOGY if a minimum of 3 batters faced is enforced?
Mark P
10:03
People seem to be overlooking that the rule change is a three-batter minimum unless the inning comes to an end.  So you can bring on a LOOGY with two outs to pitch to a left-handed batter, and if he gets him, the LOOGY doesn't need to stay in to begin the next inning.

Overall, however, it'll definitely hurt some guys' value.
