So glad I don’t have to keep asking what kind of deal Goldy will get from the cardinals. I think the cardinals got great value. What’s your thoughts?
Mark P
9:46
I'll eat my words on this one, I didn't think Goldschmidt would sign an extension before giving free agency a try.

In the current free agent climate, any first baseman who can lock in $130MM for his age 32-36 seasons seems like a winner in my books.  Seems like a good deal on both sides.
Tom
9:47
Will Scooter Gennets injury cost him a long term contract with the Reds?
Mark P
9:48
It's a pretty big blow.  Depending on when he returns and how he plays afterwards, I can see Scooter being open to a one-year pillow contract for 2020 to rebuild his value.

Does Zaidi just like to constantly do transactions?   He must get really bored when the same 40 guys are on a roster for more than a week.
Mark P
9:50
Farhan Zaidi being the Giants' prez of baseball ops, of course

This time of year, the Giants are hardly the only team scrounging the waiver wire, checking out what guys have in the tank, and weighing different options.
Still a giants fan
9:50
What's your thought on that extra inning rule change? Something like a runner starts off the inning on second base?
Mark P
9:51
That's one change that isn't happening in the next year or two, and I'm glad.  That rule seems so horribly un-baseball to me.  I'd prefer tie games rather than that.
Klbatlbraves
9:51
Do you see the Braves making any moves before Thursday?
Mark P
9:51
Yes!

So now, if the Braves make even one transaction involving a Single-A prospect, I'll technically be correct
SD fan
9:54
What ever happened to Mickey Moniak?
Mark P
9:55
His pro career hasn't exactly gotten off to a roaring start.  But don't forget, the kid was drafted out of high school and he doesn't turn 21 until May.  So it's wayyyyyyy too early to start getting excessively worried

Pick one extension signed this winter you think won’t end well for the team
Mark P
9:56
Well, if Tim actually signs me for ten years and $300MM.....
Sad Mike
9:57
Erik Kratz is the Giants’ new backup?! Dereck Rodriguez’s father might legitimately be a better option still
Mark P
9:58
You've forgotten about the inter-divisional rivalry factor.  19 times this season, the Rockies will look over at the Giants' dugout, see Kratz, and get quite frustrated with themselves

hey thanks 4 the chat my dude!! I think the a’s need a legit veteran in their rotation (Fiers / Estrada / Anderson won’t cut it). who do they bring in?
Mark P
9:59
The A's were my darkhorse pick for Keuchel for weeks, but I think the clock has run out on that one.

Why don’t the Marlins give more young guys a chance? Taking on Walker and Granderson, and keeping Prada, is only taking developmental time away
Mark P
10:01
"Learning how to be a good pro" is an underrated aspect of player development.  These guys are all well-respected veterans who are excellent clubhouse mentors for a young team.

With Scooter out for several months do the Reds continue to break Senzel in in CF or move him to 2b?
Mark P
10:03
It seems like the Reds will continue to try him out as a CF in the minors.  Honestly, I can't say I've scouted Senzel extensively or anything, but it seems like the Reds are making his development more complicated than it has to be.  Suarez and Gennett unexpectedly becoming stars is a nice problem to have, but trying Senzel out in center field just because that's your only available position doesn't seem like the best way to maximize his ability.

10:05
what does matt joyce going to atalanta mean for duvall?
Mark P
10:06
I wouldn't be shocked if Duvall is released before Opening Day

10:06
What are the chances Cleveland signs Clevinger or Bieber to an extension?
Mark P
10:07
I like the idea, the Tribe has long prioritized early-career extensions
Roger
10:08
Why not add Belt to the OF mix and have Posey play a bunch of 1B to begin the year? Between Kratz and Garcia and an occasional Posey squat and Pablo 1B, I think Belt is a capable LF and gives them a bit more punch to the OF mix.
Mark P
10:09
Belt is a career -5.5 UZR/150 and -2 DRS as a left fielder, which isn't good but it's passable.  He'll get some LF time as the Giants find ways to rest Posey, but part of the reason the Giants have largely kept Belt at first baseman is because he's one of the better defensive 1B in baseball
Red Sox Fan
10:11
Thoughts on the Sale extension?
Mark P
10:12
Based purely on Sale's age and results, a good deal.  But I'll admit, I was a bit surprised to see it happened based on his late-season usage the past two seasons.  The Red Sox obviously know more than we do about his arm, however, so if they're comfortable guaranteeing that money, so be it

10:13
On the DeGrom front, if push came to shove, I would rather extend Thor.  Your Thoughts
Mark P
10:14
That would be my preference too, though Thor has said that he's going to bet on himself
AJ JR.
10:14
Any traction still to Padres-Indians deal for Kluber or Bauer?
Mark P
10:15
I was surprised when those rumors resurfaced, though I guess it can't hurt the Padres to keep checking in.  Seems too late in the spring for such a big deal to take place

10:16
Fowler for Melancon. Bad contract swap. Who says no?
Mark P
10:17
Both players have no-trade clauses, so maybe them?  Unless they want a change of scenery.  Cards would have to eat some money to make that happen, though
Kirksquare
10:17
Do you see Leon being the Cubs answer to back-up C?
Mark P
10:18
He seems to perfectly their desire for a defensive-oriented backup catcher, eh?

What happened to Jake Peavy?
