When last we heard, Peavy was planning a comeback, and was going to set up a private workout for interested teams.  That was back in June, however, so I wonder if Peavy didn't quietly decide to call it a career

Could you see MLB going to five year max contracts like the NBA has?
Mark P
10:21
The players' union would move heaven and earth to stop that from happening

Less than a week till opening day and Keuchel is still unemployed.  Do you see him sitting out this year just to get the money he wants?
Mark P
10:24
I just don't see Keuchel skipping an entire season.  He'll end up somewhere, though by this point, I'm at a loss to imagine where

10:26
Why don't we see more prospect for prospect trades?  It seems that once a player becomes a top 100 type the team becomes wedded to them come hell or a win-now trade.
Mark P
10:28
Off the top of my head, the last true prospect-for-prospect deal was Michael Pineda for Jesus Montero and even then, Pineda had a full season under his belt.

It doesn't happen too often since every prospect is ultimately a roll of the dice until you see him in the big leagues.  If you have a guy you like in the minors and are familiar with, why trade him for someone who you don't know who's just as big a risk?
10:29
I also have to imagine that if you're a GM who is called about one of his blue-chip prospects and offered another blue-chipper in return, your first thought must be "hmm, what's wrong with that other prospect?"
St. Louis Browns GM

Ellsbury for Cueto?
Mark P
10:30
Don't see any upside in that for the Giants.  With Cueto, you can at least hope he returns healthy and at least somewhat akin to his old self in 2020.  Ellsbury has given no indication that he can be productive now or in the future

10:31
Tyler O'Neil...what do you see happening with him this year?  Can he snag a starting role?
Mark P
10:32
(That user name is an amazing callback, btw)

The Cards haven't hesitated to move younger players into the lineup as their play has warranted, so the opportunity is there for O'Neill.  Especially if Fowler or Ozuna struggle enough that the Cardinals feel a change is simply necessary

Keuchel to the Tigers for a one year deal for  $10 mill. to take Fullmer's place and build value.  What say you?
Mark P
10:34
I say no dice.  If Keuchel ends up taking a one-year deal, it will be for way more than $10MM

Bichette > Vlad?  The consensus right now is no, but how big is that gap?  Bichette looked great this spring and last year (except for April/.at
Mark P
10:36
Bichette has been very impressive, but the projections for Vlad Jr. have been borderline absurd.  Like, most projections have him as a top 20-25 hitter in the big leagues immediately.
Joe
10:36
Will Joey Bart debut this season?
Mark P
10:37
Doubtful, with just one pro year under his belt and nothing above low-A ball.  But the Giants really like him, and a 2020 debut wouldn't be a shocker

10:39
Is it now wiser for Kuechel and Kimbrell to wait till after the draft to sign? Shot at the playoffs and team does not have to give up a pick.
Mark P
10:40
Possibly, but then you're also going into the last four months of the season cold.  I guess by this point, they've missed Spring Training anyway so why not, but any player will tell you that it's extremely hard to just ramp up quickly like that

10:40
Any chance of Keuchel to the Angels?  Lots of their starters have arm issues this Spring.  Would they win the 2nd wild card if they signed him...
Mark P
10:41
I think I picked the Angels and Keuchel in the free agent contest, so many months ago.  But, it failed to materialize for one reason or another.

Padres OD SP?
Mark P
10:43
They announced it today, it'll be Eric Lauer

10:45
The White Sox could really use a veteran anchor for their young rotation consisting of Rodon, Lopez, and Giolito right now and Cease later this season and Kopech in 2020.  Nova and Ervin Santana can only do so much in 2019.  Why not bring in Dallas Keuchel to fill that role given the fact they saved all that money missing out on the Machado sweepstakes. What are your thoughts?
Mark P
10:47
The White Sox only seemed willing to splurge on Machado, specifically.  (And even then, they were weirdly hesitant about spending what they needed to.)  I don't mind the idea of a Keuchel/ChiSox link, but I don't think it'll happen
If the Sox were going to make a reactionary move like this, they would've done so closer to after they missed on Machado

10:49
Will Montoyo give Alford the keys to center once Pillar is dealt?
Mark P
10:49
My guess is yes, as long as Alford can have a long stretch where he's both healthy and productive in the minors
Dave
10:50
The Jays have seemingly elite infield prospects, but mediocre outfield talent.  Is it time to start making trades or just m
Mark P
10:51
"Just turn the elite infield prospects into center fielders!" -- the Reds

Still too early to gauge long-term plans, since none of Vlad Jr., Bichette, Biggio, etc. have played a big league game.  It already seems like the Jays are warming to eventually putting Gurriel in the outfield, or at least deploying him as a super-util guy

Why no teams in New Jersey?
Mark P
10:51
Yankees, Mets, and Phillies would all block it due to territorial rights

10:52
The Rays changed baseball by inventing The Opener, just sayin.

Let's give it another season or two before calling it a true game-changer

Iannetta and Wolters are starting the season as the catchers in Col.  With their lack of offense do Rox look for an upgrade?
Mark P
10:55
I was surprised the Rockies didn't more strongly pursue another catcher during the offseason.  They can look now, though the pickings are pretty slim
