With all the extensions and money on the books beyond 2020, how does Boston make a long-term contract for Betts work?  Does Boston actually hope Martinez opts out to free up money or trade a tough contract to move (ex: Price; Eovaldi)
Mark P
10:43
BoSox get Porcello/Sandoval/Moreland/Pearce off the books after this season, then Rusney Castillo (remember him?) off the books after 2020.  Don't forget, Boston is also still getting a lot of value on Benintendi and Devers being on pre-arb deals, plus guys like E-Rod aren't too expensive
There's room to extend Betts and get under the luxury tax line, even while keeping JDM
10:44
It'll just take some creativity
Unfortunately a Mets fan
10:44
Mets talking to Keuchel... due diligence or something more?
Mark P
10:44
Can't hurt to talk and see if any common ground exists.  Mets beat guys today indicated that there wasn't much of a connection, however

Why is everyone in such a hurry to trade Stroman, Sanchez, Smoak. Do you think the Jays keep them?
Mark P
10:46
Stroman/Sanchez are both free agents after 2020, Smoak is a free agent this winter.  They don't really have roles on a team that isn't planning to make a push until probably 2021.  Indications are that the Jays plan to deal Stroman and/or Sanchez even if they have big rebound years, since that just ups their trade value

Who joins Jeter in HOF next year?
Mark P
10:48
My hope is that Larry Walker makes the leap in his last eligible year, though it's a long way to go from 59% to 75%.

Bonds, Clemens, Schilling all have a chance but there's a lot of baggage there.  I think it might just be Jeter and whomever the veterans' committee elects
Cubs Fan

Should Cubs try to deal Addison Russell for bullpen relief?
Mark P
10:49
They can try, though I'd guess Russell is a total no-go for some teams.
Tommy John
10:51
Who do you see being prone to needing this?  Do they still run a chart on players with a delivery prone to injury?
Mark P
10:51
Bradley Woodrum's most recent information for us on this subject was published back in 2017:

Dallas Keuchel
10:51
Did I overplay my market or are teams lowballing me?
Mark P
10:53
Pitcher on the wrong side of 30, not a hard thrower, more solid than elite over the last couple of years....it's a perfect storm of circumstances that led to Keuchel's lack of a market.  Every player gets lowball offers to start, but it seems like things never kicked into the "ok, let's get serious" gear for even one team in negotiations.
Super GM
10:54
Why the heck do the Angel's keep getting injuries? It seems like as if when someone signs with then they magically get injured.
Mark P
10:54
By this point, I'd almost believe a reverse-Angels In The Outfield scenario.  Has Christopher Lloyd turned to the dark side?!
Dan
10:55
How bad is the Marlins organization? They should be absolutely loaded after giving up Stanton, Ozuna, Yelich, and Realmuto and they got nothing. Why do they insist for guys like Acuna or Albies from Atlanta and then finally settle for a return that is probably extremely inferior to what the Braves has actually offered?
Mark P
10:55
In Stanton's case, they were hemmed in by his no-trade protection.  But overall, you're not wrong, the Marlins are still lacking in blue-chip talent even after this latest fire sale.

Tampa looked really good vs the Astros this weekend? How crazy would it be if the Ray's are the only AL east team to reach the playoffs?
Mark P
10:57
That would legitimately be one of the most surprising results in baseball history
Kikuchi
10:57
Any chance I win more than 15 games this year?  Unheralded rookie of the year?
Mark P
10:58
I wouldn't say unheralded, I think everyone had Kikuchi on their top 3-5 ROY ballots.  It's just that Vlad Jr. and Eloy are taking up a lot of the attention
Paul G
10:59
Am I not worth the money?
Mark P
10:59
You were absolutely worth every penny, Sideways was a great movie.

Wait, if this is referencing Paul Goldschmidt rather than Paul Giamatti....my answer is the same
11:01
That's all for tonight's chat.  Scheduling note for next week: we're doing a SATURDAY NIGHT chat instead, at 8pm CT.  It'll be just like SNL, except with more baseball and less Kyle Mooney.  Until then!
