MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk

What will it take to get the Jays offense going? Will Vlad be enough to wake them up?
Mark P
9:37
Right now I think Vlad Sr. might be the best hitter in the Jays lineup

With Trout locked up could Adell be a trade chip to bring back pitching? Or will he be relied on in the Angels outfield in the near future? Who makes a good trade partner?
Mark P
9:38
I'd be stunned if the Angels traded Adell, he seems more or less untradeable.  Adell is being groomed to join Trout and Upton in the outfield by as soon as 2020, and the Angels badly need another young, controllable star player

Any thoughts on the Bote extension? Kind of an odd move, but not very risky. I like Bote and he had some HUGE moments last year, but I didn’t even think this was on the radar......
Mark P
9:40
It was an interesting deal, you're right.  It's sort of a no-lose situation for the Cubs, as $15MM isn't a big deal for a large-market club like them, and Bote could end up being a very valuable superutility type.

9:40
With Will Smith (C) and Keibert Ruiz waiting in the wings, is Austin Barnes a long term Dodger?
Mark P
9:41
I can see Barnes retained maybe as a backup, if he never really breaks out as a regular-type of catcher
Bruce Bochy
9:42
Will I get 2,000 wins before I retire?
Mark P
9:43
Bochy now has 1929 wins, so that's 71 more for the Giants this season, which would make it a 74-win season.  My vote leans towards yes, but it'll be touch and go
The DH
9:44
I'd like to retire.  Get rid of me.
Mark P
9:45
I'm not sure when we'll see the DH in the National League, whether it's in the next collective bargaining agreement or later.  But I can safely say that we'll never see the AL lose the DH.

Is it @ all possible j.d Martinez opts out?  If so how hard does Boston pursue with Mookies impending free agency and the contracts now on the books?
Mark P
9:47
JDM has three years and $62.5MM left on his contract after the 2019 season.  Even with another big season, I'm honestly not sure he'd be able to top that in free agency, the way the market has turned on bat-only types over the last couple of years.  Martinez may be the exception as such an elite bat, but it would be close.
9:48
As for Betts, I'd suspect Boston makes a big push to keep him with or without JDM on the roster
Nick
9:48
Would being able to trade draft picks bring the excitement anywhere close to NFL draft level?
Mark P
9:49
I do think MLB should allow draft picks to be traded, though baseball's draft will never match the NFL's in popularity.  A big-name NFL draft pick can instantly turn a team around the very next season, whereas even the best MLB picks almost always need a couple of years in the minors
Keuchel
9:51
If I wait until my qualifying offer drops off, how likely am I to get the offer I’ve been holding out for? I don’t see a team being more likely to give a 4 year deal when they’re only getting 1-2 months out of the first year
Mark P
9:52
I could see Keuchel getting a two-year deal, with a low or prorated salary for 2019 and then a larger salary for 2020.  Maybe with an opt-out involved.  But you're right, the ship seems to have sailed on four years

9:53
any chance padres get a front of the rotation arm? will they stand pat with their current rotation? or is it too early to tell
Mark P
9:53
If they stay in contention, I'd be surprised if they stood pat at the trade deadline
Bill
9:54
How good is Pete Alonso? man he’s got scary power
Mark P
9:55
Talk about a dream start, eh?  I applaud the Mets for just calling him up already rather than playing the service-time game
Salva
9:56
Could the Angels be a trade spot for MadBum?
Mark P
9:56
That's assuming the Angels are still in the race by midseason, which might be a tall order if these injuries keep stacking up
The Show
9:56
What’s gotten into Adam Jones?  Is his pace sustainable?
Mark P
9:58
No, in the sense that he isn't going to have a 1.239 OPS for the entire season.  But the move to a new team and a new league sure seems to have revitalized Jones.  Small sample size, to be sure, but it's good to see one of the good guys in the game bounce back

You probably should move next Sunday night’s chat. Game of Thrones is back!!!
Mark P

Next Sunday night's chat may be moved to a different time for other scheduling reasons, but we might have to issue a "no spoilers" edict for future Sunday chats.

The Giants were adamant to stay under the luxury tax last year and apparently will stay under this year by a considerable margin. Other than possibly resigning Bum, who do you see them willing to spend $ in the free agency market over the next couple of years.
Mark P
10:02
They were willing to make the big splash for Bryce Harper, which was reportedly an ownership-driven decision.  Assuming there are any free agents left in the wake of ExtensionMania, I can see the Giants being willing to break the bank again on more star players.

What will it take for Theo to sign a one year pillow deal with Kimbrel.  Bullpen is shaky at best and if all else fails and the Cubbies fall out of contention, he could help restock the farm.  If he and the Cubs succeed, you only have him on the books this year
Mark P
10:04
It would require ownership to realize they're not out of money.  Epstein can't spend what he isn't authorized to spend
Phred
10:05
The Phillies would have spent a fortune on Trout. Can't they reallocate a small portion of that for Kimbrell?
Mark P
10:06
So, money that may or may not have had earmarked for two years down the road should be spent now, on a far inferior player (no knock on Kimbrel, he's just obviously less valuable than Trout)?  Don't get me wrong, signing Kimbrel would have made sense a month ago, but now I wonder if teams are just generally wary of anyone who didn't get a Spring Training under their belt

Will I be the first MLB player to have a pinch runner for every atbat.  IE John Goodman in “The Babe”

Do the White Sox get on the ‘extension-wagon’ and re-up Abreu this season?
Mark P
10:09
I'd guess the White Sox would try to lock up their younger guys before focusing on a first baseman who will be 33 next season, and is coming off a down year.  Abreu is off to a nice start, however
SDP

I think the Padres will have a great rotation by 2021 but just lack one more star player right now. Who should they go after as a position player?
