Draft Day
7:47
You never see picks traded as they are in other sports why is that and is it even allowed in MLB?
Mark P
7:47
MLB teams aren't allowed to trade draft picks, apart from the selections in the Competitive Balance rounds

I've love to see the league change the rules in the next CBA to allow all picks to be traded.  There isn't any real downside, and it would help add more buzz to the draft.  Imagine a breaking news item the night before, of a team dealing a top-10 pick for a current star player?

with the Phillies making an early trade do you see more contenders making early trades since there is only one true deadline this year or do you feel most teams will wait until the deadline is closer
Mark P
7:50
I tend to agree that we'll see more early deals this year, possibly in the NL particularly since so many teams are still in the race.  The Phillies knew they had a specific need for a LH bat, so they figured why wait, and just got the guy they wanted now.

How do you grade Dipoto so far in Seattle?
Mark P
7:54
It's only been about 3.5 years since Dipoto took over the team, which is usually too early to properly grade a general manager since you need to give them a chance to get their own draft picks up to the majors.

In terms of results, Dipoto doesn't have much to his credit, despite all of the roster churn.  In fairness, he also wasn't left with much in the aftermath of the Jack Z era, so I can't blame Dipoto for not already having a contender in place this soon.

Speaking of the Athletics...how does 1 resume a suspended game 3 1/2 months out? Original game: A's at Detroit. Come Sept in Oakland will Tigers bat last? More importantly, respective lineups could be virtually empty after: trades, releases, injuries. How do you overcome that, resolve practically "empty" lineups? How does it all work? --Billy Beane, Jr !

I'll be honest, I kind of like these rare suspended-game situations since they lead to all kinds of wacky statistical situations.  Like Juan Soto last year, his "first career homer" technically happened before his official debut thanks to his participation in a game that was resumed months after it began
Rendon
8:00
Aside from maybe the Phils, what contending team would be looking to add Rendon?  He plays one position although he did play some second early.  Granted he’s valuable but where is his market?
Mark P
8:02
I'm pretty sure lots of teams would find some way to get Anthony Rendon into the lineup.  Yankees, Rays, Indians, Twins, maybe the Astros depending on Correa's status

Twins: A lot of the Twins offseason signings were 1 year deals.  Does that mean after this season they will struggle to recreate the magic that has happened so far this season?
Mark P
8:04
While the short-term guys have played well, a lot of the Twins' success is due to the fact that in-house, long-term guys (Polanco, Rosario, Kepler, Gibson, Berrios, etc.) are all playing well.
Josh Donaldson
8:05
Is there anything I can reasonably do to remain in Atlanta past this season or is Riley's move to 3b next year inevitable?
Mark P
8:06
Well, you could take up pitching.

Realistically, it seems like the Bringer will be a one-and-done as a Brave.

Does the Yankees facial hair policy prevent Keuchel from wanting to sign with NYY?
Mark P
8:08
Some guys are very picky about their facial hair, but honestly, if it was between a beard or a multi-million dollar contract, hand me a razor.

Bartolo Colon's instagram account had a flurry of activity yesterday.  What do you see this foreshadowing?
Mark P
8:09
We can only hope!  MLB fans have been sorely missing Bartolo all year
Iggy
8:10
Iggy appears to be doing great for Cindy. Does he get moved at the deadline?
Mark P
8:11
Between Iglesias and Dietrich, the Reds really did a fine job in under-the-radar middle infield pickups this season
8:12
They could deal Iggy for the right offer, of course, but he's inexpensive enough that I can see the Reds just keeping him for the remainder of the yera
year

If you were in the majors, what would your walk up at-bat music be?
Mark P
8:13
I feel like I'm asked this question in every chat, and give a different answer every time.

This week, my music is "Nothing But Flowers" by Talking Heads
8:14
And on that note, let's wrap this chat up.  See you next week!
