MLBTR Chat With Mark Polishuk
powered byJotCast
Mark P

The prevailing wisdom is that the Wilpon family lost a fortune in the Bernie Madoff scandal, and thus aren't willing or able to spend the $200MM+ payrolls that you'd think a New York team would be able to easily handle
Last Chance
8:20
Do you think Raptors win the NBA Finals before your next chat?
Mark P
8:21
Oof, I can't imagine the pressure on the Raptors if they lose the next two games, and the Warriors come into a seventh game with all the momentum. But Golden State has looked so off this whole series (and the Raptors have played so well) that I think Toronto will get it done
Yankees
8:21
Why aren’t we pushing for a big name like Rendon or Votto with all the injuries?
Mark P
8:22
Why would the Yankees want Votto when they have Luke Voit putting up big numbers at a fraction of the price?

Rendon is a more plausible target, assuming the Nats actually put him on the trade market
Cashman
8:24
Do I need to win a World Series soon to keep my job?
Mark P
8:24
This would be Yankees GM Brian Cashman, btw

And no, I don't think Cashman's job is remotely in jeopardy.  He has set this team up to contend for years to come.

8:25
Donaldson for Grienke straight up?
Mark P
8:26
The D'Backs may be interested in getting Greinke's deal off their books, but would want more than just Donaldson back.  This would be a veritable salary dump for them.

From the Braves' perspective, what about their spending over the last year or so makes you think they'd suddenly take on Greinke's contract?
Mike Soroka
8:27
You don’t like me do you? You never talk about me...
Mark P
8:27
I can't mention every player in every chat!  Nice start for Soroka so far, but the statistics indicate some regression is inevitable.  (And then I'll get the "what's wrong with Soroka?!" messages.)

What's McKay's upside (who does he compare to)....and will when he get the call from the Rays?
Mark P
8:32
It's hard to put a comp on McKay given his unique two-way skillset (and it's unfair to compare him to Ohtani).  His pitching has been better than his hitting over the last couple of years, and he only cracked Triple-A this season.

Given how the Rays cycle through relievers and have been known to be aggressive with promotions, I'd say that McKay could be up in the big leagues as early as this season if he was "only" a pitcher.  Given the unique nature of his two-way skills, however, the Rays might not want to bring him to the Show until his bat has a bit more polish.
He's a really interesting prospect, and I love that the Rays are going outside the box to legitimately develop a potential two-way player.
Beane Ball
8:33
Does Beane still have say in player deals for As?
Mark P
8:35
Yes, Beane is still the head of the baseball operations department.  GM David Forst handles the day-to-day business, but any noteworthy trade would bring in everyone from the front office, with Beane having the last word

I know it’s not the Wild, Wild West, but I’d like to ask a question about the Men in Black (and orange). What is preventing the Bad Boys in Baltimore from becoming Six Degrees of Separation from being a Suicide Squad? If we don’t speak again, have a nice Independence Day!
Mark P
8:35
I appreciate the Focus that went into this message.  You are Legend.
Cody Bellinger
8:36
Am I a one year wonder like a Roger Maris or am I here to stay and a future star?
Mark P
8:37
I've got to defend Maris here, he wasn't at all a one-year wonder.  People forget that he also won the MVP in 1960, with numbers only slightly lesser than his numbers in 1961.  Beyond those two legendary years, he also had several other good seasons.
8:38
I think the Dodgers would be quite pleased if Bellinger ends up with a Roger Maris-type career
Ari
8:40
Since the Yankees missed out on the chance to sign Keuchel, which seemed weird that he could have accepted a one year deal also and helped a team in playoff contention, what moves do you think they should make? The bullpen has been struggling recently and it seems like the offense is becoming inconsistent.
Mark P
8:42
The Yankees reportedly weren't willing to sign Keuchel for anything beyond the prorated $17.9MM qualifying offer figure.  This worked out to around $11.16MM.  The Braves ended up going a bit above that figure ($13MM) to seal the deal
8:43
Is it weird that so many teams (not just NYY) weren't willing to pay just a little bit more to add Dallas Keuchel, a very good pitcher?  Yes.  But then again, everything about Keuchel's free agent trip ended up being pretty weird.
8:44
Time to wrap things up for this week's chat, see you all next week!
