With the Montas suspension and the Treinen injury,  is it time for the As to pack it in for 2019?  Any trade pieces?
Mark P
10:06
The Montas suspension is such a huge gut punch for that team.  The A's have done an amazing job of staying competitive despite a lack of starting pitching over the last two years, but that's been because guys like Montas have been stepping up
10:08
Given the nature of how Beane's front offices have operated, the A's will be prepared to both buy and sell at the deadline if they're only on the fringes of the race.
If they do sell, Soria and Anderson will be shopped, veteran guys like that

With only one trade deadline this year, when do we start seeing some big names moved?
Mark P
10:10
Could technically be at any time, though a lot of teams are still on the fence between buying and selling.  The lack of action in the AL pennant races may quiet a lot of the action amongst those borderline teams, for instance

Does today’s debacle spell the end for Mickey?
Mark P
10:13
Reports from this week indicated that Callaway had a fan in Jeff Wilpon, so he was likely to last through the season.  After today's incident, I'm not quite as sure about that

With Bumgarner, Smith, Watson, Dyson, Vogt, Sandoval, Panik, Vogt all with low amounts of control left, do the giants try to trade all of them this summer in hopes for a quicker rebuild?
Mark P
10:15
I'm sure the Giants will be open to any offers for these guys, and surely at least a couple of them (though probably not all) will be in different uniforms on August 1

Your thoughts on the White Sox drafting college seniors picks 5-10, giving them all $10,000, way below slot value and allocating all of that money to high school picks in rounds 2-4.
Mark P
10:17
The White Sox aren't the only team deploying this strategy in past years or even in this very draft.  Seems like kind of a risk, though that doesn't necessarily mean those $10K picks are just writeoffs

With only one trade deadline, should mlb move the trade date back a couple of weeks?
Mark P
10:19
Having the deadline come roughly two-thirds of the way into the season seems like a pretty fair placement.  Putting it around July 15 would conflict with the All-Star Game, and putting it August 15 wouldn't give new players much time on their new teams (leaving front offices even less willing to pay up for rental players)

10:20
Hi Mark. Are we all just living in Yordan Alvarez's world?
Mark P
10:20
I guess it's only a question of whether Alvarez breaks Bonds' career HR record by 2021 or 2022 by this point
Larry
10:21
Do you see the Braves making a move for Stroman?
Mark P
10:22
I'm sure they'll be in touch with the Jays, if they haven't already.  Anthopoulos obviously knows Stroman as well as any executive
Stuart Sternberg
10:23
Does thsi Montreal gambit help me get a stadium?  (Maybe them too?)
Mark P
10:23
Sternberg is the Rays' principal owner, btw
10:24
In this environment of cities being increasingly unwilling to spend civic money on privately-owned stadiums, the odds of a team getting two different cities to pay for two stadiums seems awfully slim.

Chances that the Braves offer Donaldson a QO next year and what's the likelihood he could accept it?
Mark P
10:25
I feel like the Braves have third base earmarked for Austin Riley, so Donaldson isn't in their plans.  Especially since I'd guess Donaldson would seriously consider accepting a QO, given how veterans have been treated in free agency the last few years (and how the QO guys have been particularly hurt)
You can put it on the board
10:26
Why doesn't the White Sox young core get the same love as say the Padres? Moncada, Anderson, Eloy, Robert, Madrigal, Giolito, Cease, and Kopech  are all closer to all playing together and a more expansive group than Machado, Tatis Jr. Urias, Renfroe, Paddack, Gore, and a number of minor league pitchers with question marks. I'd take the Sox core over SD's at this point.
Mark P
10:28
The thing about the Padres' young talent is, they have about a dozen notable prospects beyond the names you mentioned.  They're very deep, to the point that several members of their current "core" very well might not be on the next great Padres team.  (Also, while Machado is young, I'm not sure I'd put an established MLB star in this grouping of mostly inexperienced players.)

Plus, the White Sox didn't have any of their guys really break out until Moncada, Giolito, even Anderson to much of an extent this season
Tom
10:29
Given the farm system strength and good start, do you see the Rays being able to make a big move (hitter, starter or closer)? Don't they almost have to trade given recent struggles to close free agents?
Mark P
10:31
The Rays have the prospect depth to be in on just about trade target they wish.  The question is, will Tampa be willing to make such a big outlay to land a player who can help them win now.

The trouble with being deep in prospects is that other teams also know this, and thus will try and soak a team for multiple good minor leaguers.  Teams like the Rays often have to do extra negotiating just to get other teams' demands down to something reasonable.

10:33
Do you honestly see DET getting as much (or more) for Boyd than the White Sox got for Quintana? Hoping so but not sure I see it
Mark P
10:33
I'd also be surprised if Boyd got that much back
Options
10:34
Can you explain briefly how “options” to the minors works? Does a player have a finite # of demotions (6?) in their 6 year rookie contract?
Mark P
10:35
Players only have three option years, though a fourth one can be doled out in certain circumstances (i.e. injury)

In each of those option years, a player can be called up and sent down the minors an unlimited amount of times.
Raylan
10:36
If a player gets traded to Toronto, is there any work visa issues or does the team/mlb take care of all that?
Mark P
10:37
Those issues are sorted out between the teams and the league in pretty short order.  I can't remember the last time I heard about a player dealt to the Jays whose arrival was delayed by such paperwork
Cash
10:38
Scherzer for Frazier and Abreu, with the Nats covering 50% of his remaining salary. Who says no?
Mark P
10:39
The Nationals instantly say no.  I think I say this in every chat, but I highly doubt Washington trades Scherzer at the deadline, if ever

What if Portland would have drafted Jordan instead of Sam Bowie
Mark P
10:40
I wonder what minor league baseball team Jordan would've ended up with without the Reinsdorf Bulls/White Sox connection.
Kai
10:40
Do the dodgers need a starter now that Rich Hill is injured who do they get and who do they trade ?
Mark P
10:41
The Dodgers don't NEED a starter since they have so much depth, but knowing that team, they'll look around at any available arms regardless
Tom
10:41
Do see baseball ever making wild card best of 3? At least a playoff team would get 1 home game. Seems only fair to the fans.
