Plus, Frank Costanza could angrily cite several example of the Yankees trading good prospects!
Al Avila
9:40
Would Gleyber Torres be enough for Matt Boyd?
Mark P
9:40
Just Gleyber by himself in a 1-for-1 deal?  Yeah, I've got to believe Detroit says yes to that
Astros fan
9:41
What will it take for the ‘stros to land Scherzer (without giving up Alvarez)
Mark P
9:42
It's time for Mark's weekly "the Nationals aren't going to trade Scherzer" statement!
Matt
9:42
Are the Rockies more likely to shore up the rotation or the bullpen come trade season?
Mark P
9:43
My guess is bullpen, which is wild considering how much money the Rockies have wast....er, spent on relief pitching in the last few years
But another low-key addition like Oh could be on the radar
Hotdog
9:46
Mustard or ketchup?
Mark P
9:46
I love both, but mustard if I had to pick just one
9:48
btw "Hotdog" has asked several condiment-related questions, so just to save time......ketchup, mustard, tomatoes, and pickles, with relish also added if it's a BBQ or if I'm at certain restaurants.
Tatis
9:48
Why is nobody talking about this kid when mentioning phenomal young players?
Mark P
9:49
Wait, people AREN'T excited about Tatis?  The kid looks great!  Missing that time on the IL set back the hype machine a bit, but the Padres have to feel great about what they've seen so far

What would trey mancini bring back in a trade?
Mark P
9:51
I feel like a Mancini return would be only decent, not a huge haul.  His defensive limitations are a big concern, so it isn't likely NL teams will get involved unless they have an opening at first base

Padres give: myers, kinsler and Morejon (top 100 prospect, pitcher) for: a ham sandwich. Any possible takers?
Mark P
9:53
Ok, so my preferred toppings on ham sandwiches are....

You know, if any team could be creative enough to try an "attach a top prospect to a bad contract" type of deal just to lose the money, you'd think San Diego might be it.  They have so much minor league depth that they could lose a Morejon for nothing and still be a top-ranked farm system

Hi Mark, Putting aside Verlander to Stros, has a deadline trade in recent memory really put a team over the top?
Mark P
9:56
I mean, Steve Pearce was World Series MVP last year.  And Eovaldi played a massive role in Boston's championship.

In 2016, the Cubs had Chapman.  In 2015, the Royals had Cueto and Zobrist.
Sk8rboi
9:57
Should there be an all mlb allstar event after the year before the world series like the NFL to exclude the world series participants.
Mark P
9:58
If there's any All-Star game you shouldn't try to emulate, it's the Pro Bowl
Buccos Future?
9:58
Pirates going all-in on a rebuild and cash in on Marte, Rivero, Polanco, smaller moves, or do something unexpected like trade for an Archer type
Mark P
9:59
I don't see them doing a full-scale rebuild, especially not when they're also still within range of first place in the NLC.

Pittsburgh is always kind of an odd team to watch at the deadline.  They never really make huge splashes even when in contention, yet they also sprung for Archer/Kela when they were only on the outskirts of the race.  It's hard to predict with them

What's ur "best" trade idea for NYY. Forget what the 'homers' are pitching. Something that's 'doable' and makes them viable contenders for #28
Mark P
10:02
My hot take is that the Yankees could do nothing and still be big-time contenders, since their lineup and bullpen is ridiculous.  Maybe add a reliever and just try the 2015 Royals strategy in the playoffs, or deal one of their many good position-player prospects (who are now mostly roadblocked at the big league level) for a good starter
That's only a good starter, you don't necessarily need an ace.  Just look at what Happ did for New York last year
Spuds
10:04
Does Boone get AL manager of the year. I despise the Yankees, but you have to give him credit. Team is in first place despite missing a significant chunk of its offence and starting pitchers. Am I right?
Mark P
10:05
Manager of the Year usually goes to the skipper who led his team to the biggest improvement over last year's record, so I have to think Rocco Baldelli is the favourite.  Boone clearly knows what he's doing, however.
Braves
10:05
The “conservative adds” seem to be working out quite well so far. They’re clearly the 2nd best team in the NL and are just getting better and better. Maybe give AA some credit by not mortgaging the future in free agency.
Mark P
10:06
A solid take.  Remember, AA knows what it's like to make a big offseason splash and then fall dreadfully short (the 2013 Blue Jays).
Rays
10:07
Do you think McKay stays up the rest of the season if he has success next start, or are the rays going to shut him down soon do to innings count
Mark P
10:08
The innings count is a big factor, so I doubt he'll be a huge factor down the stretch unless the Rays get creative and use him in the bullpen or something
Theo
10:09
Why did I sign Descalso?
Mark P
10:10
Descalso was a very solid player in 2018, and the Cubs signed him for next to nothing ($5MM over two years).  The deal hasn't worked out yet, but Descalso's rough season is far from the Cubs' biggest problems
Dayton Moore
10:11
Ian Kennedy for Myers.  I trade bad contracts, but SD gets contract that expires sooner, and Kennedy will help them in any playoff push.  Royals do not have any corner OFs beating down the door, and Gordon may retire at end of year.
Mark P
10:12
While it would be funny to see Myers wind up back in KC after all these years, no way would the Royals have any interest in this.  I think Myers' trade value is next to nil right now
CH
10:12
What is the Cubs biggest problem?
Mark P
10:13
They haven't hired Cookie Monster as their permanent seventh-inning singer.
Ronald Acuña
10:13
Why wasn't I invited to the HR Derby?
